OLDIES SUNDAY: Ding Dong – Badman Forward, Badman Pull Up (2006)


It’s Sunday, and it’s time for a throwback. Today’s “Oldies Sunday” entry celebrates dancing, and this Artist one of the many in Dancehall who emphasized on the dance culture. Some know him as Kemar, but many know him as Ding Dong, and we look back at his track, “Badman Forward, Badman Pull Up“.

Produced by Rohan “Tallman” Gray on the “Badman Forward Riddim” and released through VP Records/Future Vibez Productions in 2006, Ding Dong brought communities together with the release of, “Badman Forward, Badman Pull Up”. With a catchy chorus over a strong Dancehall production, Ding Dong had everyone from the gangsters to the civilians doing a dance in relation to the track. “Badman Forward” was one of Ding’s first entries as a Dancehall Artist as he made his name in the streets as a Dancer, creating various moves that gained popularity. “Badman Forward” quickly gained traction, and became one of his breakout hits, and becoming a mainstay in the street dances. It would go on to gain International recognition, especially at the Caribbean parties.

Since the release of “Badman Forward, Badman Pull Up”, Ding Dong would go on to become an International name. He scored a number of hit singles over the years, created dances, and collaborated with some of the best in the business. He is currently gearing up to release his long-awaited debut Album, “From Ding Dong, To World Ding” in May, which aims to expand on his artistry. “Badman Forward, Badman Pull Up” remains one of his biggest hits.

Recording Artist Blvk H3ro continues his mission of bringing his music to more parts of the world. He has been enjoying connecting with people in North America and parts of Europe, but Africa was always the destination. A few months ago he visited Ghana, and connected with many of his people, and enjoyed new experiences. Later this year he will be kicking off a World Tour, but before that, he drops a new project called, the “WinnahEP.

Consisting of 4 tracks, Blvk H3ro goes universal with the “Winnah” EP. The project provides inspiration, taps into various sounds from Reggae, to Dancehall, to Afrobeats, to Amapiano, and sets the tone for his new stage of elevation. The new EP was done in collaboration with Production collective Aspekt Mafia, and features guest appearances from Ghanaian-American Recording Artist Sean Taylor, and Guyanese-American Recording Artist Jahdan Blakkamoore o/c Blakkamoore. As Blvk H3ro continues to step into new territories and be immersed in new cultures, he moves with the confidence of a “Winnah“.

It’s Easter Sunday, and it’s 420. You’re either eating Easter Bun, or smoking Weed, or doing both. Either way, it’s “Oldies Sunday“, and we have a selection for you. We go back to the 80s to check out Rita Marley’sOne Draw“.

Co-Produced with Ashley “Grub” Cooper and released through Shanachie Records/TSM Records/Rita Marley Music in 1981, it’s all about the good green in Rita Marley’s “One Draw”. The aim is to get high, and Rita needs a hit of some good Ganja to make everything right. Over some mesmerizing production, one will soon find themselves on a cloud when tuning in to this track. Rita brings the melodies throughout, and provides the right sound for those who are rolling up, puffing up, and taking flight. “One Draw” quickly became a hit for Marley, and was featured on one version of her 1980 album, “Who Feels It Knows It“. The song would go on to sell over Two Million copies, and soon became an anthem for Stoners, Weed Connoisseurs, and music lovers worldwide. The song was featured in the classic Comedy Film, “How High?” among other Films, and was sampled by Cypress Hill, Biz Markie, Psycho Les of Tha Beatnuts, Black Moon, Sizzla, and Macka B.

Since the release of “One Draw”, Rita Marley went on to release more music, continued to perform solo and as a member of The I-Threes, started a number of organizations and brands under the Bob Marley and Rita Marley brands, became a Philanthropist, became an honourary citizen of Ghana, was given the Order of Distinction (OD) and Order of Jamaica (OJ) honours by the Government of Jamaica, and received a number of awards, accolades, Degrees, and titles over the years. She has scored a number of hits over the years, but “One Draw” remains one of her greatest hits, especially during 4/20.
