.@DZLRecords Shares Starr Dane’s Final Single, “Wha Gwaan”

On July 2, the Jamaican music scene received news of the passing of Dancehall Artist, Starr Dane. The Deejay was on the rise showing great promise with his releases over the years, but his life was tragically taken in Los Angeles, California. A member of the Dale Virgo-founded DZL Records, he shared his skillset with many Artists, and always promoted positivity in his conversations. In order to preserve his memory, it is encouraged for listeners to get familiar with his previously-released work, and now his latest single, “Wha Gwaan“.

Produced by Dale Virgo, “Wha Gwaan” is Starr Dane’s final recorded track. The track delves into some Social Commentary as Dane questions the Island’s rising crime rate, the corruption, the deception by those in power, and the imbalance in the way of life for the citizens. Dane asks the right questions here, and the track looks to inspire others to ask the same questions, with more action into getting the answers and fixing things. The late Deejay’s final entry should not go by the wayside, and should encourage positive change for not only Jamaica, but for the rest of the world where the issues also reside. Sleep well, Starr Dane.

OLDIES SUNDAY: The Visionaires – Marcus Garvey (1982)

Yesterday (August 17) was celebrated as the birthday of the late Rt. Excellent Marcus Mosiah Garvey. The Pan-Africanist was Jamaica’s first National Hero, and inspired many Civil Rights Activists, Rastafarians, The Nation Of Islam, and Black Power Movements. His teachings and influence continues to connect with many generations, but on “Oldies Sunday“, we look back at one of his tributes. Today’s selection comes from the Roots Reggae Band, The Visionaires and their track, “Marcus Garvey“.

Produced by Austin Hutson and released through the Orthodox Label in 1982, The Visonaires shared the importance of the Rt. Excellent Marcus Garvey in “Marcus Garvey”. The track champions for the philosophical works of Garvey to be taught in the schools, and encourage more people to learn about him and become more conscious of themselves. The band also speaks on Garvey’s prophecies that have come to pass, and call out those who try to eradicate his name and works from the public. “Marcus Garvey” was featured on the band’s only album, “To Have A Home“, which was featured in 1982, and gained popularity locally and Internationally. Not much information is out there about The Visionaires, but the band consisted of Audley Watson, Basil Gayle, and Winston Dudney. “Marcus Garvey” is still played today, especially during Marcus Garvey celebrations.

Thank You The Visionaires For This Classic!

.@FousheeLive Samples Prince Buster’s “Ghost Dance” For Her “war” Single

New Jersey-based Recording Artist Fousheé recently announced her upcoming sophomore album, “Pointy Heights“. Dedicated to the St. Catherine community of Pointy Heights and her Jamaican background, Fousheé looks to deliver some of her best music yet while tapping in some sounds from the Caribbean. The sound is evident in her newest single, “war“.

Fousheé handles the production on her new single, “war”, as she speaks on the need for peace and harmony as she has had times where there were conflicts in her life. She makes note that there is power in the tongue, and she is having the kind of peace where she’ll even pray for her opps. Her vocals emphasize the peace that many of us need, but the production taps into a sound that may perk some ears. “war” features a sample of the late Ska Pioneer Prince Buster’s 1967 track, “Ghost Dance“. The self-produced track features Buster having a conversation with a friend who is no longer among the living through the writing of a letter, and sending well wishes to others who have passed away. The track also features backing vocals from a young Lee “Scratch” Perry (ah, duppies...), and was featured on the 1967 album, “Judge Dread“.

Fousheé looks to bring a new vibe to the world when she releases her “Pointy Heights” album on September 13, through RCA Records.
