OLDIES SUNDAY: Singing Melody – Say What (2000)

It’s been a while, but we’re back with “Oldies Sunday“! No matter what’s going on outside, good music is always inside. Today’s selection comes from the birthday boy, one of Jamaica’s legendary Vocalists, Singing Melody. We go back to check out, “Say What“.

Produced by Bobby “Digital-B” Dixon for Digital-B Records and released in 2000, Singing Melody delivers something for the ladies with “Say What”. The song finds him playing the role of a Man who is distraught with a Woman’s bad experiences in a relationship, and has all intention to make her life better. For every wrong move that Man made, Melody would do right by his love interest. “Say What” was released at a time when Singing Melody was one of the top acts out along with being a part of the supergroup, L.U.S.T. with Tony Curtis, Thriller U, and Lukie D. The single quickly became a hit for him, adding to the list as he was enjoying a career spanning a number of years. The single was later featured on his 2002 3rd album, “Expressions“.

Since the release of “Say What”, Singing Melody went on to release more music. He briefly enjoyed time as a local Reality TV star with his Wife, and is still actively recording music, and DJs for his fans on Social Media livestreams. “Say What” continues to get played in parts of the world, and remains one of his top hits.

Thank You Singing Melody For This Hit!

OLDIES SUNDAY: @MarcAnthony – You Sang To Me (2000)

The Month of June is recognized as “Caribbean American Heritage Month“, and today we close the Month on “Oldies Sunday“ with a Singer who has solidified himself as a legend. Today’s selection comes from Puerto Rican-American Singer/Actor Marc Anthony with “You Sang To Me“.

Co-Produced with Cory Rooney and released through Columbia Records in 2000, Marc Anthony was all about falling in love in “You Sang To Me”. Sometimes the person you want to love and make a solid foundation was in front of you all this time, and this song taps into that scenario as Anthony shares his connection with that person, and the first time he realized he was falling in love with her. Anthony delivers with smooth vocals over a solid production, and it was bound to command the listener’s attention in the first few seconds. According to a couple Interviews, “You Sang To Me” was inspired by Anthony’s relationship with Singer/Actress Jennifer Lopez as he fell in love with her while being married to another Woman. Eventually they became an item with Marriage and children, and divorced after 10 years. “You Sang To Me” was featured on his 1999 self-titled 4th Album, which went on to sell 4 Million copies. “You Sang To Me” was success for Marc Anthony as the single went #1 on Music Charts in the US, Canada, and Croatia, and was nominated for a GRAMMY in 2001. The song was certified Gold in Austria, Norway, and Sweden, but went MultiPlatinum in Jamaica as it is on almost every R&B/Souls Mixtape, and has lived on Jamaican Radio for a very long time. A number of remixes of “You Sang To Me” was released in 2000, and a Spanish version was released in 2006 on a compilation project.

Since the release of “You Sang To Me”, Marc Anthony went on to become one of the highest selling Salsa Artists of all time, earning a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records. He has sold over 12 Million albums worldwide, scored 4 GRAMMY awards, won 8 Latin GRAMMY awards, is a 29-time Lo Nuestro Awards winner, appeared in a number of Films, TV Shows, and Stage productions, is a minority owner of the Miami Dolphins, and has been involved in a number of Philanthropic activities and organizations. Marc Anthony has accomplished a lot over the years, but “You Sang To Me” remains one of his biggest hits.

OLDIES SUNDAY: Papa Reu Ft. Lil Keke – Diamonds And Pearls (2000)

The Caribbean has created, and dabbled in various musical genres over the decades, and they have turned into hits, or significant moments in the culture. There used to be a demographic that frowned upon the idea of Caribbean Artists doing Hip Hop Music, but over the years it has become the norm, with hits being made from some of the releases. For today’s Oldies Sunday selection, we highlight an Artist who used his Caribbean background to be a part of Hip Hop History. Hailing from Trinidad & Tobago, his name is Papa Reu, and we look back his track, “Diamonds And Pearls“.

Released through Reu Muzik in 2000 and featuring Houston Rap legend Lil Keke, Papa Reu had the ladies in mind for his single, “Diamonds And Pearls”. With Reu’s blend of Hip Hop and Dancehall deliveries, he melodically shares that he will provide a life filled love, happiness, loyalty, and splendour for the lady who falls for him, while Keke outlines in intentions in his segment. The production samples Evelyn “Champagne” King’s 1982 hit “Love Come Down“. “Diamonds And Pearls” became a hit for Papa Reu in various parts of the U.S. including Houston, Texas where he was based, and was featured on his 2000 debut album, “Xcuse Me!“, and Lil Keke’s “From Coast To Coast” project.

Since the release of “Diamonds And Pearls”, Papa Reu became a name etched in the History of Southern Hip Hop. He released more music over the years, and with his blend of Dancehall and Hip Hop, he was featured on a number of tracks with the likes of 504 Boyz, Lil Wayne, Juvenile, 8Ball & MJG, Rick Ross, Solange Knowles, Chamillionaire, Scarface, and many more. He was also signed to the legendary Cash Money Records for a number of years. Many still remember and play “Diamonds And Pearls”.

OLDIES SUNDAY: @TheRealMrLexx – Full Hundred (2000)

On Oldies Sunday, we celebrate Icons, and the songs they have created. For today’s Oldies Sunday selection, we highlight a Palmer who has made great contributions to Dancehall. His mama named him Christopher and he started out as Lexxus, but the world now knows him as Mr. Lexx (Mr. Lex as well)! We go back in time to check out the track, “Full Hundred“.

Produced by Richard “$hams” Browne for B-Rich Records on the “Orgasm Riddim“, Mr. Lexx was all about living life to the fullest on “Full Hundred”. A song that was motivational, Mr. Lexx emphasized that whatever he was doing in life, he was going to give it his all, and you should too! Nothing but the best for Mr. Palmer. “Full Hundred” quickly gained popularity following its release, and was one of the top singles featured on the “Orgasm Riddim”, which also spawned a few hits. A music video was made for “Full Hundred” that gained mostly positive reviews, and was premiered on Jamaica’s “Entertainment Report” television programme in 2000. The track was featured on Mr. Lexx’s 2005 debut album “Mr. Lex“.

Since the release of “Full Hundred”, Mr. Lexx went on to enjoy a career that gained him a few more hits over the years. He found himself in a few controversies and even a few beefs, and dabbled in Radio and Television as a Media Personality, but he remains one of the more entertaining names today, and thanks to Social Media, he has gained an audience that continues to grow. He is also watching the rise of Recording Duo The Yutes, who happen to be his sons. “Full Hundred” remains one of his most well known singles.

THANK YOU MR. LEXX FOR THIS HIT!
