We Pay Tribute To Jimmy Cliff With New “Sampling” Playlist

On November 24 2025, the world mourned the loss of one of Reggae’s most legendary Ambassadors, Jimmy Cliff. One of the pioneering Artists of the genre, he took Reggae to places that have never heard of it, and solidified himself as one of Jamaica’s true Rockstars. He scored big in music, and in Film, and has influenced generations. Despite him not being here physically, his musical legacy, name, and family live on. We send our condolences to his family at this time. We pay tribute to the Icon with our latest Playlist, “Sampling Jimmy Cliff“.

While Jimmy Cliff’s catalogue has been off limits in the case of sampling, there were a few Artists who were allowed a chance to, who then managed to treat the music with respect, and paid tribute through their own creations. Featuring the likes of Rebel MC, Cutty Ranks, FatBoy Slim, Afroman, and Kris Kross Amsterdam, you can tune in to some of the sampled works, and the original hits from Dr. Cliff himself. If you aren’t familiar with our Playlist selections, check them out here. Thank you Jimmy Cliff for your work and life, and may you continue inspiring many for years to come. Sleep well, legend.

OLDIES SUNDAY: Mavado – Weh Dem A Do (2006)

Today is a celebration. Today marks the birthday of one of Dancehall’s giants, Mavado. Why not give him an “Oldies Sunday” feature? Today, we go back in time to check out, “Weh Dem A Do“.

Produced by Delly Ranx and released through Di Ranx Productions on the “Redbull & Guinness Riddim” in 2006, Mavado came out swinging with “Weh Dem A Do”. Armed with a gritty and melodic delivery, Mavado stepped onto the scene showcasing the dark environment he’s from, and made for a song that not only had the gangsters’ attention, but the ladies as well. The Riddim’s upbeat sound made a good fit for the “Gully Gad“, and with a catchy hook (“Weh dem a do, weh dem a try…”) intact, it quickly became one of the Deejay’s first hits. “Weh Dem A Do” was featured on his critically acclaimed debut album, “Gangsta For Life, The Symphony Of David Brooks“, which went on to become a hit on the International market.

Since the release of “Weh Dem A Do”, Mavado not only became a household name in the Caribbean, but became a known figure Internationally, and secured his place as one of Dancehall’s legend. He ushered in his “Gullyside” movement, scored multiple hits, participated in one of the biggest beefs in Dancehall history (Gully vs Gaza with Vybz Kartel), and recently returned to Jamaica for the first time in several years due to legal issues. Mavado still holds the position as one of Dancehall’s top acts, and “Weh Dem A Do” still gets the crowd going. Check out our “Gully ForeverPlaylist featuring a number of the Deejay’s hits over the years.

Thank You Mavado For This Classic!
