OLDIES SUNDAY: Ambelique – Penny Lover (1997)

Welcome to February. We kick off Reggae Month, celebrate the birthday of the late Dennis Brown, recognize Black History Month, and celebrate love. It’s “Oldies Sunday“, and before we start off, we salute the late Sly Dunbar known to many from the Production duo Sly & Robbie who passed away on January 26. Today’s selection is all about love and remembering the greats. We go back in time to check out “Penny Lover” by Ambelique.

Produced by Sly & Robbie and released through the Taxi label in 1997, it’s all about a deep desire for that special someone in Ambelique’s “Penny Lover”. The track is a Reggae cover of US Singer Lionel Richie’s 1984 hit single, and Ambelique does it justice with his unique vocals, pulling in the listener who is focused on love. Sly & Robbie’s top tier production adds well to the powerful track, and it became a hit for listeners. “Penny Lover” was featured on the 1997 album, “Sings The Classics“, and was included in a number of Sly & Robbie projects following including the GRAMMY Award-winning “Friends” album.

Since “Penny Lover”, Ambelique continued to release more music. He is still active, and in 2024 he released the album “Blind Spot“. Though “Penny Lover” is a cover, it’s still loved by many around the world.

Thank You Ambelique For This Classic!

Elephant Man Gets Ladies To “Set Suh”

Elephant Man’s work ethic is one that should be studied. When many are thinking of slowing down in their 31st year, he’s still moving at a pace like he’s in his first. His efforts should be applauded, as he’s keeping the people moving. This time around, he wants the Women to “Set Suh“.

Produced by DreamRich Records/Fuse, Elephant Man is ready for the ladies to give him their best moves in, “Set Suh”. Ele continues to bring the energy, and we can expect this track to set things off when it hits the party. With a flashy music video directed by Simeon Di Great, the ladies throughout show us what they’re made of, with Ele enjoying it all. Fans of the Deejay can catch him next month in Kingston at the 20th anniversary staging of “Footloose“, in the UK in May for “City Splash“, and get their speakers ready for a new album later this year. Ladies, the floor is yours!

Jo Lin Finds Liberation With Debut Single, “Closure”

Today, we introduce to you a new Singer on the block, and her name is Jo Lin. The young star is ready to take on the world with her sound, and we believe you’re going to love her. A Singer born with the talent, she is the Daughter of one of Dancehall’s legendary voices, Ghost. All that aside, it’s time you hear what she’s about. Tune in to her debut single, “Closure“.

Produced by SOS Dynamikz, Jo Lin finds emotional clarity, and liberation in her debut single, “Closure”. When many relationships end, they end on a note that leaves people clueless and confused. For some relationships however, the partners find themselves back in each other’s spaces for good, or for bad. Jo Lin has to deal with a relationship that was bad for her, but something keeps pulling her back in. In the end, she breaks away from that grip of toxicity, and sends a message to Women in similar situations to abandon ship. “Closure” is for those who need to realize their self-worth, to heal from past pain, to truly love one’s self again, and be alert to those red flags, and walk away. Jo Lin’s debut starts off strong, and for those who wish to hear more of her, catch her sharing the stage with her Father on February 15 at I Love Souls” at Di Lot on 33 Constant Spring Road, Kingston.

Rygin King Shares Visual For “Rain”

It has been close to a decade since Dancehall Artist Rygin King scored big with “Tuff“, but it has been well over a decade since he stepped on the scene. The years have seen his ups and downs, his triumphs, and his stumbles, but he continues to show his strength daily. This strength doesn’t just happen, and with every new day comes a challenge. Still determined, King motivates many with his music, and is still putting in the work. Earlier, he premiered, “Rain“.

Directed by DirectorBadz, “Rain” gives us a look into Rygin King’s life as he speaks on overcoming situations to become a success story, reflecting on the days where he had nothing, counts his blessings, sees the other side of success, and drives away naysayers who wish to spread doubt on his path to greatness. “Rain” was produced by Rygin Trap Records/4FortyFour Atelier, and is an addition to a solid catalogue that shows the Deejay at some of his best, and when he’s at his most vulnerable. Shout out to the day ones, and may Rygin King continue to inspire.

Agent Sasco Motivates With “Nothing To Something”

Dancehall Artist Agent Sasco celebrates a couple decades in music, and he has accomplished a lot. From a young “Assassin” who won over many with his lyrical prowess, to “Agent Sasco” who has matured to an all-around Artist, he has ensured he has a place in Jamaican music, and built a structure that takes care of his family for years to come. Put it this way like his new video, he made it from “Nothing To Something“.

Directed by Prajahpahii Duksah, Agent Sasco takes us to the construction site in the video for the Skatta Burrell/Big Win Music-produced, “Nothing To Something”. We are witnessing a Man who expanded his brand and business to Construction, and gives a quick shout out to “Mulberry Valley Estate“, his Eco Sanctuary in St. Mary, while providing motivation for the listener. The video features Social Media Personality/Actress Mellietime, who takes on the role of overseeing the construction going on while reminiscing on days when her Parents worked to provide for her. There’s nothing like a child giving back to her family who sacrificed for her well-being, and we see this story unfold in the end. Sasco may not always be in the “Crown” conversations, but those who respect authentic lyricism hold him in high regard. Stay focused!
