Earlier, the Recording Academy announced their many nominations for the 2021 GRAMMYs. From Pop to Bluegrass to Hip Hop, the world got a chance to see if their faves would be called up to possibly snag the golden award come January 2021. The “Best Reggae Album” category saw an interesting lineup this time around, and while there was celebration, there was some disappointed. The “Best Reggae Album” nominations are:

While many were hoping for acts like Protoje, Lila Ike, and Popcaan getting called up this year with their respective projects, Chronixx scored a nom for his appearance of Free Nationals’ 2019 self-titled album, Producer Stephen “Di Genius” McGregor and Koffee grab another one for their contributions on John Legend’s “Bigger Love” album, Noah Powa, Shaggy, Inner Circle, and Bounty Killa score noms for their appearance on Maxi Priest’s album while Skip Marley adds two more nominations for his H.E.R. featured single “Slow Down“, and his appearance on The Wailers’ “One World” album. We wish them all the best on January 31, 2021. Will you be watching The GRAMMYs?

Road To The Reggae Grammy: We Look Back At The Nominations Of 2004!

With the staging of the 60th Grammy Awards drawing near, we thought we’d look back at some of years where the Reggae Grammy was won. While many know of the winners, we also want to look back at some of the nominees. To close off our series, today we’ll look at the year 2004.

1. Buju Banton – Friends For Life

The early 2000’s saw a wave of Dancehall/Reggae Music crossing over on to the American music scene. Buju Banton was one of the Artists recognized during that time when his 2003 Album “Friends For Life” received a Grammy nomination. Featuring a whopping 19 tracks, it included the Nadine Sutherland assisted “What Am I Gonna Do”, “Sha La La”, and “Mr. Nine”.

2. Burning Spear – Freeman

The legendary Burning Spear brought along his message music in the 2000s and it showed people were receiving it when his 2003 Album “Freeman” got a Grammy nomination. Consisting of 12 tracks, it included “Hey Dready”, “Old School”, and “We Feel It”.

While Jamaican Music enjoyed some crossover success at the time, Reggae Band Black Uhuru stayed true to its sound with their 1993 Album, “Mystical Truth”. Featuring tracks like “Dreadlock Pall Bearers”, “Living In The City”, and “Mercy Street”, the project earned them a nomination for the 1994 Grammy Awards.

2. Burning Spear – The World Should Know

Known for his music with a conscious message, Reggae Artist Burning Spear received his 5th career Grammy nomination for his 1993 Album, “The World Should Know”. With 10 tracks, this Album featured the tunes “I Stand Strong”, “Sweeter Than Chocolate”, and “Identity”. Spear went on to receive a total of 12 nominations in his career, winning 2 awards himself.

To kick off the newly named “Best Reggae Album” category of the 1992 Grammy Awards, Reggae Band Black Uhuru were nominated for their 1991 Album, “Iron Storm”. This Album came during one of their many group changes, and it featured the singles “Trouble”, “Dance Hall Vibes”, and the title track.

The 1988 Album featured Toots taking on ’60s classics like “I’ve Got Dreams To Remember”, “It’s A Shame”, “Love And Happiness” and more.

1. Jimmy Cliff – Reggae Night (Single)

Before the “Best Reggae Album” Grammy, there was the “Best Reggae Recording” category. This category was open to both singles and albums before officially switching to the album only format in 1992. Jimmy Cliff’s hit single “Reggae Night” was thrown into the running. The single was produced by Amir Bayyan, Jim Bonnefond, and Ronald Bell, and was written by Bayyan and La Toya Jackson. This single was also featured on the Artist’s 1983 Album, “The Power And The Glory”. It went on to be one of Cliff’s biggest hits.

2. Steel Pulse – Steppin’ Out

Another single that was considered for a Grammy award was UK Reggae Band Steel Pulse’s “Steppin’ Out”! This was produced by the Band along with Jimmy “Senyah” Haynes, and Del Newman, and written by lead vocalist David Hines. The single was also featured on their 1984 Album, “Earth Crisis”, and went on to be a favourite among fans.
