Going Down: Songs With Taboo Lyrics In Dancehall

Recently, a certain Artist opened a can of worms with a rather “spicy” single. While folks are in a uproar about it, we’ve heard it all before. The Dancehall culture has had a stance on certain sexual practices for years, but with more people having an open mind, some Artists tend to stir the pot by adding taboo themes in their singles. Here are a few that sparked the conversation.

1. Sycamore Tree – Lady Saw (1996)

In a year when the “Joyride Riddim” was taking over airwaves, the Dancehall Artist born Marion Hall used her platform to chase away men who wanted oral “favors” on “Sycamore Tree”. At the time, a woman who was known to do such things were often chastised, even from the recipients. Things have changed in 20 years…Do you remember?

2. Tanya Stephens – Freaky Type (1998)

Before your favourite Artist did it, Tanya was not afraid to put a spotlight on it. If you “burned” it out in public, but did it in the dark, you may not have liked this song. To Tanya it was always the ones most vocal against it were the “professionals”. Over a Baddis Production, she sure liked the “Freaky Type”.

NEW VIDEO: @OnstageTV Interviews @TheCham

Cham

Just when you think his career is over, Cham pops up out of nowhere with a single that turns into a hit. From solo tracks to International collaborations, Cham explains why he is “Too hot” on Onstage. Here the “Lawless” artist spoke on his career since his “This is why I’m hot” remix feature in 2007, being nominated for awards overseas, living in Miami, his wife “O”, his single and video “Too Hot“, touring, his new album and working on more music. Good interview here, Cham has always managed to keep himself in the spotlight. I’d like to hear another collaboration with his wife. Check out his interview below and share your thoughts in the comments section.

NEW VIDEO: @Wayne_Marshall x @TheCham x @AceHood x @WakaFlockaBSM – Go Harder

WM

After dropping the star studded “Go Hard“, then another with “Go Harder“, Dancehall artist Wayne Marshall finally dropped the visuals for the latter. Directed by Jon J. Visuals and features Baby Cham, Ace Hood and Waka Flocka, the video shows the artists dropping their lyrics in a warehouse setting with girls dancing to the tune. Damian Marley also makes a cameo appearance in the video. Not a bad effort here, the video has a dark feel to it however. Still not a fan of Waka’s verse but will look out for the next time he collabs with another Jamaican artist. Wayne’sTru Colors” project is on iTunes now. NEW VIDEO: @TheCham x @ShortFilmzJA x YGF Visuals – Feel Good (Short Film)

TCWhen the liquor gets to you there’s no telling what can happen. Tonight features a short film based off Dancehall artist Cham’s “Feel Good” single. Directed by Short Filmz Jamaica and YGF Visuals, the video starts off with two friends leaving a party and as they go their separate ways, one has an urge to end the night with a young lady. The rest of the video shows you what the liquor can do to your mind and this guy had a handful. Great video here that’s a bit of the comedic side and J. Wray & Nephew’s White Rum made a cameo appearance. I know many can agree how their mind can play tricks on them after having a wild night. What do you think? Check out the video below and share your thoughts in the comments section.
