Going Down: Songs With Taboo Lyrics In Dancehall


Recently, a certain Artist opened a can of worms with a rather “spicy” single. While folks are in a uproar about it, we’ve heard it all before. The Dancehall culture has had a stance on certain sexual practices for years, but with more people having an open mind, some Artists tend to stir the pot by adding taboo themes in their singles. Here are a few that sparked the conversation.

1. Sycamore Tree – Lady Saw (1996)

In a year when the “Joyride Riddim” was taking over airwaves, the Dancehall Artist born Marion Hall used her platform to chase away men who wanted oral “favors” on “Sycamore Tree”. At the time, a woman who was known to do such things were often chastised, even from the recipients. Things have changed in 20 years…Do you remember?

2. Tanya Stephens – Freaky Type (1998)

Before your favourite Artist did it, Tanya was not afraid to put a spotlight on it. If you “burned” it out in public, but did it in the dark, you may not have liked this song. To Tanya it was always the ones most vocal against it were the “professionals”. Over a Baddis Production, she sure liked the “Freaky Type”.

2016 Was Really @TheAlkaline’s Year, You Just Have To Live With That.


Yeah I said it. The Artist born Earlan Bartley has been gaining some traction in Dancehall Music over the years. Despite the controversies, he still manages to have a large fan base, plenty bookings, and hit songs. With his buzz starting around 2013, he first caught the attention of many with his Music Video for “Not A Slack Song”. The video, which scored high on the raunchy scale, was met with a huge backlash online with many writing him off as an Artist who had to use controversy to get a “buss”. The songs that followed further got his name buzzing for better, or for worse.

NEW MUSIC: Twin Of Twins – Bun Again (Padlock)


With Gully Bop and Shauna Chin making headlines recently for their whirlwind romance gone stormy, the Twin of Twins spoke on the issue with “Bun Again“. Featured on the UIM Records produced “Red Hot Chilli Riddim“, the twins borrowed a bit from Tiger to speak on Gully Bop’s woes, Shauna Chin, and even looked back at Mr. Vegas and Foota Hype’s own relationship troubles. They asked listeners not to laugh, but I’m sure you can’t help but to do so. The Padlock business might be booming. Big up Krish Genius. Here he spoke about his career, adjusting his content without alienating his core audience, the church and maintaining his faith, his collaborations with secular acts and still doing the Lord’s work.He also premiered the video for “I Am Going Home” which features Konshens.
