OLDIES SUNDAY: Alborosie Ft. @EtanaStrongOne – Blessing (2008)

It’s a new month! Welcome to June, a.k.a. the Wedding month for many. Big up those who are tying the knot this month, but what’s on your Wedding Playlist? Luckily for today’s “Oldies Sunday” selection, we have a suggestion. Check out Reggae Artists Alborosie and Etana’sBlessing“.

Co-Produced with Clifton “Specialist” Dillion and released through Forward Recordings in 2008 and VP Records in 2009, Alborosie and Etana delivered what would become a part of many Wedding soundtracks in, “Blessing”. The duo share the joy of being together, joining in hearts and love, and emphasize that their union was a divine creation. The combination of their unique vocals over the powerful production make for a great listen, and shortly after its release, it became a hit. “Blessing” was featured on Etana’s debut album, “The Strong One” in 2009, and in 2014 on the “Alborosie & Friends” album. While we don’t have chart information on the track, it became a top charting song for many listeners worldwide.

Since the release of “Blessing”, Alborosie went on to have a fruitful career in Reggae. The Italy-born Artist scored more hits and released more albums, cementing his place in the culture. Etana went on to become a Reggae powerhouse, becoming the first Female Artist in nearly 20 years to be nominated for a GRAMMY. She has amassed a number of hits, but “Blessing” remains one of her biggest collaborations.

Thank you Alborosie And Etana For This Classic!

OLDIES SUNDAY: Junior Sledge – Be My Bride (1986)

It’s the month of June! For many, it’s considered a Wedding month, as many couples chose this month to jump the broom, get hitched, and make an honest partner out of each other. We’ve highlighted a few Wedding themed songs on Oldies Sunday, and today we give you another. Today’s selection comes from Junior Sledge with the track, “Be My Bride“.

Produced by George “Photographer” Lemon, “Be My Bride” was released in 1986 through the Photographer Label. On the track, Junior Sledge tells the lady in his life that she will be his Wife. He lists some of the many ways he feels about her, and makes the case that she will be his Bridge. Sledge delivers his track with some melodies over a Dancehall production. “Be My Bride” was a part of the “Photographer In a Dancehall” compilation that featured tracks with Admiral Bailey, Carl Meeks, Anthony Red Rose, and others. To the couples looking forward to their Holy Matrimonies this month or later this year, play this at the Wedding, and let us know if you did.

OLDIES SUNDAY: Dennis Brown – Inseparable (1987)

It’s Wedding SZN! For the month of June, Oldies Sunday will feature some love songs that can be a great addition to your Wedding Playlists, and could be the official song to dance to. Today we close off the month by looking back at the late Dennis Brown’s 1987 track, “Inseparable“! Produced by Willie Lindo, this was through the UK J&W Records. The song features Dennis Brown professing his love for his significant other, celebrating how much his search for love is no more, how much she means to him, and just how they click together. A song that’s perfect for the Wedding reception, it’s one of Dennis Brown’s most popular love songs. The track was featured on his 1987 album of the same name.

Dennis Brown started out as a child star, and thanks to the many hits over the years, he became the “Crown Prince of Reggae“! July 1 will mark 20 years since he left this earth as a result of a heart attack and a collapsed lung, but he continues to live and inspire many through the music.

OLDIES SUNDAY: Browne Bunch/Brownie Bunch – Blue Skies (1991)

It’s Wedding SZN! For the month of June, Oldies Sunday will feature some love songs that can be a great addition to your Wedding Playlists, and could be the official song to dance to. Today we look back at the 5 Brother group Browne Bunch (a.k.a. Brownie) and their single, “Blue Skies“! With them all handling production and released through the Island Treasure label in 1991, the brothers Danny, Glen, Cleveland, Dalton, and Noel delivered a dedication to that special someone, and letting them know that they are their life’s purpose. To have someone who knows every side of you, and to help you become a better person is truly a blessing, don’t take it for granted.

Starting out as a teen sibling music group in the 70’s like The Jackson 5 and The Sylvers, they had a short stint before disbanding later in the decade. Their paths in music after, though broad, always lead them back together. They’ve made attempts to regroup in 1983 and 2015, but scheduling conflicts have put a damper on things. Danny Browne went on to become a legendary Producer, founder of the Bloodfire Posse group and Mainstreet Records, and recently had his work sampled by the likes of Nicki Minaj (more on that here). Glen Browne has worked with Jimmy Cliff, Ziggy Marley, and Tarrus Riley and has become a legendary Bass Player. Cleveland Browne went on to become a legend himself as the other half of the production duo, “Steely & Clevie“, with an outstanding track record in Jamaican music. Noel Browne took his talents as a Keyboard Player to the UK, and has worked with many inlcuding the late Dennis Brown, Glen Washington, and Papa San. Dalton Browne has been the go to Guitarist for many, and has worked with Freddie McGregor as his Musical Director, and even worked with Akon on his album, “Konvicted”.

OLDIES SUNDAY: @AlaineSinga – Heavenly (2006)

It’s Wedding SZN! For the month of June, Oldies Sunday will feature some love songs that can be a great addition to your Wedding Playlists, and could be the official song to dance to. Today we go way back with Alaine Laughton with her single, “Heavenly“! Produced by Donovan Bennett a.k.a. “Don Corleonie on the “Heavenly Riddim“, this was released in 2006 through Don Corleon Records, and finds Alaine making a dedication to the love of her life. With lyrics about how strong their love is, completing each other, what loving each other is like, and “finding Heaven on Earth“, Alaine gave us a beautifully performed song that’s perfect for the couples. The single was also featured on her amazing 2007 debut album, “Sacrifice“, and remains one of her more popular tracks.

Since the song’s release, Alaine went on to release more hits, performing across the world, and guiding talent on “Digicel Rising Stars” as a Judge. OLDIES SUNDAY: Carol Gonzalez – Spoiled By Your Love (1986/1991)

It’s Wedding SZN! For the month of June, Oldies Sunday will feature some love songs that can be a great addition to your Wedding Playlists, and could be the official song to dance to. Today we go back a few decades with Carol Gonzalez and her single, “Spoiled By Your Love“! With two versions of this track produced by Donovan Germain, one version was released through the Rub-A-Dub label in 1986, while the 2nd version was released through Penthouse Records in 1991. The Rub-A-Dub version catered to Reggae listeners with a slow tempo and the legendary Dean Fraser playing the Saxophone while the Penthouse release was more of a Dancehall version with a faster tempo. The track was a cover of US Recording Artist Anita Ward’s single that was featured on her 1979 debut album, “Songs Of Love“. On the song, Carol spoke on a lover she could not get over, and no matter who she moved on with, he was just “the real thing“. Both versions of the song had Carol’s name buzzing locally and overseas, and received favourable airplay.

While Carol Gonzalez released more music over the years, and even scored a couple hits, she took a break to focus on her Law career (Attorney-at Law and a Judge). She came back to music for a short period in 2006 and launched her debut album a year later, but today she still practices Law.
