OLDIES SUNDAY: Alaine – No Ordinary Love (2005)

Welcome to the month of June on “Oldies Sunday“! In some cultures, the month is a popular one for Weddings, and today we will highlight a song that has been a part of many Wedding playlists. We go back in time to check out Alaine’sNo Ordinary Love“.

Produced by Don Corleon Records on the “Seasons Riddim” and released in 2005, Alaine sings about the type of love that grows and sticks with you in, “No Ordinary Love”. She sings about all the good that comes from the love she’s experiencing, from the cozy moments, to the lovemaking, to security that comes with being with that special someone. “No Ordinary Love” quickly became the breakout single for Alaine, making her an Artist to watch. The “Seasons Riddim” was a popular release, and the single was one of the top played singles off of the compilation. “No Ordinary Love” would be later featured on her 2007 debut album, “Sacrifice“, and has become a favourite over the years during Valentine’s Day celebrations, and on Wedding days.

Since the release of “No Ordinary Love”, Alaine went on to become one of Jamaica’s most-loved Vocalists. She previously earned fame as a child star, but after leaving life in the corporate world to pursue music, she never looked back. She would release more music over the years, held her own as a music judge on Digicel’s Rising Stars, and continues to take her music to stages in parts of the world. “No Ordinary Love” is one of her most popular singles.

Jah Cure & T.O.K Sampled On New @JColeNC Album, “The Fall-Off”

New music is in the air, and many are breathing it all in now. American Rapper/Producer J. Cole earlier released his long-awaited album, “The Fall-Off“. The new album serves as his supposed final project, and is chock full of selections for the fans, and music lovers. The double disc covers various aspects of his life and music career, but there are familiar sounds featured throughout.

On the track, “Only You“, a track featuring Burna Boy and features production from T-Minus, DZL, and Luca Mauti, J. Cole raps about Fatherhood, the trial and tribulations of a long-term relationship, and the negative effects that can come from success. The track taps into a variety of sounds, but particularly tapped into something from Jamaica. “Only You” sampled Jah Cure’sLonging For“, and T.O.K’sFootprints” from the “Drop Leaf Riddim“. Released in 2004 and produced by Don Corleon a.k.a. Donovan Bennett for Don Corleon Records, “Longing For” was one of Jah Cure’s most successful releases while “Footprints” became one of T.O.K’s top crossover singles in the 2000s.

Jah Cure was incarcerated during the release of “Longing For”, and the track built heavy anticipation for the Singer locally and Internationally. It was later featured on his 2005 album “True Reflections…A New Beginning“. J. Cole’s “Only You” title borrows a lyric from the track as well. “Footprints” found T.O.K at the top of their game. The group that consisted of Alex, Bay-C, Craigy T, and Flexx eyed more International looks, the 2000s was good to them. “Footprints” gained Islandwide appeal, but when the music video premiered on US channels BET and MTV, the single secured a sizable part of the International market, and would be a mainstay for years to come. “Footprints” was featured on the group’s 2005 album, “Unknown Language“. Don Corleon’s “Drop Leaf Riddim” remains one of his most successful Riddims, and the 2004 release featured tracks from Bounty Killa, Morgan Heritage, Sizzla, Tanya Stephens, Gentleman, Luciano, Maxi Priest, and more.

J. Cole’s new album, “The Fall-Off” is out now.

It’s another Oldies Sunday! It may be rainy where you are, or it’s dry, but we have something that’s good for both. Her love is definitely intoxicating as Gentleman beautifully delivers the lyrics with his signature melodic sound. The “Drop Leaf Riddim” was one of the popular Riddims of the early 2000s, and “Intoxication” was a top single in the compilation as it charted in Germany, Jamaica, and Austria. “Intoxication” was featured on Gentleman’s 2004 album “Confidence“, and the 2005 “IntoxicationEP.

Since the release of “Intoxication”, Gentleman continued to have a successful music career in Europe and parts of the Caribbean. He released more singles and albums, and continues to perform around the world. Gentleman always paid tribute to Jamaica and her music that heavily inspired him, and his music is still in heavy rotation. “Intoxication” continues to be a favourite among listeners.

Featuring Dancehall Artist Wayne Marshall, Vybz Kartel displayed superb delivery and lyricism on “New Millennium”. He opened with the iconic line, “Inna mi Karl Kani, wid a bottle a tall Canei, tuff a life?”, and Wayne Marshall showed that he had a great career ahead of him when he delivered the hook/chorus. This great collaboration became an overnight hit for Vybz Kartel, a first in his career, and made way for his transition from upcoming Artist, to one of the greatest Dancehall Artists to ever do it. “New Millennium” was featured on Vybz Kartel’s 2003 debut album, “Up 2 Di Time“.

Since “New Millennium”, Vybz Kartel made more hits, got caught up in various controversies, held a #1 spot that became the envy of others, influenced many the world over in countless ways, and is a top name despite being currently incarcerated.
