OLDIES SUNDAY: Terror Fabulous – Miss Mattie Son (1995)

A lot has happened these past few days, and there’s a saying that prevalent in these times that says, “You live by the sword, you die by the sword“. Replace “sword“, and you’ll get the idea. Today on “Oldies Sunday“, we look at a situation that fits the phrase. We go back in time to check out Terror Fabulous and his track, “Miss Mattie Son“.

Produced by Donovan Germain on the “Swing Easy Riddim” and released through Penthouse Records in 1995, Terror Fabulous shares a cautionary tale in, “Miss Mattie Son” (o/c “Mattie Son”, “Matty Son”, and “Miss Mattie Bwoy”). Terror speaks about a Man, Miss Mattie’s son, who terrorized his community, wielding his tools to cause despair. Despite his family urging him to turn his life around, the Man believes that his reign of terror was necessary. As the other saying goes, “You reap what you sow“, and so Miss Mattie’s son would eventually meet his end. “Miss Mattie Son” was a song that emerged during a time when party songs were the rage, but it still penetrated the scene, and got some attention. Fabulous was enjoying quite the attention during that time, and his track was well-received by many.

Since the release of “Miss Mattie Son”, Terror Fabulous continued to maintain a music career that gained International attention. Sadly, it would later be put on hold due to him battling Mental Health issues over the years. Attempted comebacks in the 2000s, and in recent time thanks to Social Media, and has performed some of his early tunes. “Miss Mattie Son”, as well as his other songs, still get played to this day.

Thank You Terror Fabulous For This Tune!

XHAE Has a Thing For The Boy Next Door On “Bidi Bidi”

There’s always something going on in the Neighbourhood. Whether a fight, yard work, or new tenants, everyday has a new event. How about obsession? Upcoming Recording Artist XHAE has one, and she gives us an earful about it in, “Bidi Bidi“.

Produced by Jermaine Forde (son of Brinsley Forde of the legendary group, ASWAD) and released through Dubshot Records, XHAE is obsessed over the boy next door in, “Bidi Bidi”. The track finds her falling head over heels for him, and she has a lot of love to give him. “Bidi Bidi” samples the 1995 classic single “Anything For You” by Canadian Recording Artist Snow and Reggae/Dancehall Singer Nadine Sutherland, which was produced by Hurby “Luv Bug” on the “Grafton Brew Riddim“. “Anything For You” became a timeless hit thanks to its “Allstar Remix” which featured Buju Banton, Louie Culture, Beenie Man, Terror Fabulous, and Kulture Knox. XHAE previewed the single during UK DJ AG Online’s visit to the Island earlier this year, and earned some viral love. She believes the official single will open a few doors, and set her up for a great career. Greatness is within her indeed, as her Father is one of Jamaica’s leading Vocalists Mikey Spice, and her Grandfather is the legendary Duckie Simpson, founder of the quintessential Reggae Group, Black Uhuru. There goes the Neighbourhood.

.@JalenNgonda Brings Classic Reggae Vibes With “All About Me”

It’s a new week, and with it comes new music. We know the influence of Jamaica around the world. No matter how they try to downplay it, wi large! Today’s post highlights a Singer who was influenced by Jamaica’s music culture for his latest single. Check out Maryland-born/Liverpool-based Recording Artist Jalen Ngonda’sAll About Me“.

Produced by Victor Axelrod and released through Daptone Records, Jalen Ngonda taps into some old school Reggae vibes for the new single, “All About Me”. Jalen plays the role of an arrogant lover here as he tells his love interest that his love is a rare one, and she’ll never find another like his. On the other hand, she means something important to him, and he believes the relationship will endure. The song might have been inspired by the 1978 single “Go Away Dream” by Derrick Harriott (which was a cover of the 1973 single by The Chi-Lites), but overall, one would truly believe this was recorded by one of our soulful acts from back in the day. There is even a Dub version of the track that you can check out below. Jalen Ngonda has found himself a viral hit, and we look forward to what he’ll step out with next.

OLDIES SUNDAY: Chicken Hawk – Education (1989)

It’s back to school time, and from grade 1 to College level, we wish you all the best on the new term, and new year. Today on “Oldies Sunday“, we want to drive the message of getting your education even further with our throwback selection. We go back in time to check out Chicken Hawk’sEducation“.

Produced by Steely & Clevie on the “Fast Car Riddim” and released through Steely & Clevie Records in 1989, Chicken Hawk gave listeners a lesson with his “Education” single. It was really a lesson as he had a word for every letter, putting together a song that rode the riddim well, and displayed how lyrical a Deejay can be. When it comes to education, many Deejays encouraged us to read, write, and learn the golden rule, making us scholars in the classroom, and in Dancehall School. “Education” was a hit for Chicken Hawk, with many children knowing it word for word back in the day. The track was featured on Steely & Clevie’s “Fast Car Riddim” compilation, which was released in 1989.

Since the release of “Education”, Chicken Hawk went on to release more music over the years. In recent years, he has made appearances on Social Media where he would perform some of his song on livestreams and staged events. Many still remember his “Education” single, and reminisce on their school days.

Thank You Chicken Hawk For This Hit!
