OLDIES SUNDAY: The Paragons – On The Beach (1967)

It’s Summer, and it’s time to have some fun. How about some music to go with it? Today on “Oldies Sunday“, we’re highlighting a song that you could call a “Summer Song“. We go back in time to check out The Paragons’ “On The Beach“.

Produced by Sonia Pottinger with arrangement by Tommy McCook & The Supersonics and released through Treasure Isle in 1967, it’s time to revel in some fun with The Paragons’ “On The Beach”. The group, consisting of John Holt, Garth Evans, Bob Andy, and Howard Barrett, delivered harmonies and good vibes with their song that painted the picture of days at the beach with friends, playing music to dance all the time to, and having fun like it’s never gonna end. “On The Beach” quickly became a hit for The Paragons, and ended up becoming one of the group’s best releases. The single would later be featured on their 1967 album, “On The Beach With The Paragons“. “On The Beach” would later be sampled by Microphones Killarz, and covered by band member John Holt, Byron Lee and The Dragonaires, and Wayne Wade.

Since the release of “On The Beach”, The Paragons would go on to release more music until John Holt left in 1970 to pursue a solo career. Garth Evans would also leave for solo endeavours, and The Paragons would go through a few band and name changes before disbanding. The group would reform in the late 70s, and would perform over the years. Evans, Holt, and Bob Andy would pass away in 2000, 2014, and 2020 respectively. “On The Beach” would remain one of their biggest releases.

With his profile getting better and his catalogue growing, he felt it was time to take his career to the next level. His next move? The release of his debut album, “The World Is Yours“.

Featuring 13 tracks, Eddy G Bomba has his sights set on global domination with his debut album, “The World Is Yours”. Having a successful Mixtape was just the beginning, he has high hopes of his album becoming a contender for one of this year’s best. He has something for everyone on this album, and if you haven’t been hip to his sound, we hope this project changes that. Production on “TWIY” is handled by LOJ Conglomerate LTD., while Eddy earns guest features from AI Milly, Tommy Lee Sparta, Nhance, Squash, Rymey Gad, Zoyan, Skillibeng, and the late Mulla. Eddy G Bomba has accomplished much in his short career, but he’s here for the long haul, and to leave an indelible mark in the world.

Around these parts, the name “Cochise” may not ring a bell, but for those who frequent platforms like Twitch, he is one of the most popular streamers who happens to have a thriving music career. The Florida-based Rapper/Producer/Streamer has built a heavy catalogue since the mid 2010s, and has incorporated elements of his Jamaican background into his music. With his releases building anticipation every time, he gives the people what they want today with the release of, “Braces“.

Released through Warriors Com LLC, Cochise is just building some vibes here with his new single, “Braces”. He continues to incorporate some Jamaican vibes here with some lyrics done in Patois, and the Bass-heavy production compliments the song well. Known to bring a different kind of energy in his music, he further emphasizes his unique style with a music video directed by Moldyroom. The video shares lyrics throughout, so for those trying to catch on to some of the Patois, there’s a lil help here. “Braces” is for the booming systems, the clubs, and the streets, and you can tune in while Cochise readies his next album.

Elephant Man is at it again, another music release for the people! The Deejay has been having a pretty busy year, but now is not the time for vacation. When he’s not in the Studio, he’s on the road ripping local and International stages. He continues to climb the success ladder, but his journey isn’t without detractors. He deals with them a bit in the new single, “Hello Dutty Badmind“.

Produced by Energy God Productions, Elephant Man calls out the haters in “Hello Dutty Badmind”. Borrowing a cadence from the late Garnet Silk, Ele takes time out of his day to let badmind people know that he’s enjoying life, and nothing they can do to destroy that. For every move he makes, he’s a few steps ahead with his focus geared towards his next payday, or his next booking. One thing with Ele, he’ll have a song that will quickly connect with the people through its subject matter. Elephant Man is currently promoting his latest EP “Dancing To The Max“, recently shared the stage with Bounty Killa in Brooklyn, and securing a number of bookings before his return to the Reggaefest Concert series with a stop in Philadelphia in August. With all that’s going on, the haters can’t stop this one.

Nisou is a newcomer on the scene who aims to take over with her unique sound, and get the people talking with her music. She doesn’t want to join the crowd, she wants to start a movement. She steps up with her debut single, “Kit Kat“.

Produced by Reggie Crux and Neggle, Nisou deals with a bittersweet kind of love in, “Kit Kat”. She shares being in a relationship where there are tender moments, but it’s not something genuine and done for the right reasons. Despite sweet words and moments, they can’t patch up the real truth of the relationship, and walking away from this situation is the first step in loving yourself more. Nisou flexes with sultry vocals here, and she handles the production well for her debut. With a history of being in the performing arts, Nisou is ready for the main stage. Keep your eyes on this one.

OLDIES SUNDAY: Al Campbell – Trouble In The Dance (1984)

You ever heard a song so good or so popular, you didn’t know it was a remix? Today on “Oldies Sunday“, we’re highlighting an original that got partially lost because of its remix. We go back in time to check out Al Campbell’s “Trouble In the Dance“.

Produced by Rodguel “Black Beard” Sinclair and released through the Nura Label in 1984, Al Campbell shares his observations while attending a street dance in, “Trouble In The Dance”. The Singer details a few happenings at the dance like Police accosting him for some Marijuana, and Women plotting to fight to another Woman, and they set the tone for how bad it can get when you’re just attending an event to enjoy the music and vibes. “Trouble In The Dance” gained popularity when it was released, gaining airplay and being the record of choice for Selectors, but things started to sway when Dancehall/Reggae Crooner Frankie Paul took hold of the song and made his own version called, “Worries In The Dance” that same year. “Worries In The Dance” was produced by Henry “Junjo” Lawes, and Paul added more oomph to the track with extra lyrics and his unique vocal delivery. The song became a breakout hit for him, even though the Al Campbell original was still being played, Paul’s remix quickly saturated the scene.

Since the release of “Trouble In The Dance”, Al Campbell continued to release more music over the years. He still records Dubplate versions of the song, and many still recognize his original, despite the popularity of Frankie Paul’s version. Sometimes the original will set the standard, but a remix can overthrow its reign.
