OLDIES SUNDAY: Alaine – No Ordinary Love (2005)

Welcome to the month of June on “Oldies Sunday“! In some cultures, the month is a popular one for Weddings, and today we will highlight a song that has been a part of many Wedding playlists. We go back in time to check out Alaine’s “No Ordinary Love“.

Produced by Don Corleon Records on the “Seasons Riddim” and released in 2005, Alaine sings about the type of love that grows and sticks with you in, “No Ordinary Love”. She sings about all the good that comes from the love she’s experiencing, from the cozy moments, to the lovemaking, to security that comes with being with that special someone. “No Ordinary Love” quickly became the breakout single for Alaine, making her an Artist to watch. The “Seasons Riddim” was a popular release, and the single was one of the top played singles off of the compilation. “No Ordinary Love” would be later featured on her 2007 debut album, “Sacrifice“, and has become a favourite over the years during Valentine’s Day celebrations, and on Wedding days.

Since the release of “No Ordinary Love”, Alaine went on to become one of Jamaica’s most-loved Vocalists. She previously earned fame as a child star, but after leaving life in the corporate world to pursue music, she never looked back. She would release more music over the years, held her own as a music judge on Digicel’s Rising Stars, and continues to take her music to stages in parts of the world. “No Ordinary Love” is one of her most popular singles.

Recording Artist D’yani is one of Jamaica’s leading Vocalists that many need to recognize. For well over a decade he has showcased his talents, and has elevated himself to be on the level where he’s in heavy demand. Whether he’s singing about his daily observations or delivering tunes for the ladies, he is a star. It took a lot of work, and his “Journey” continues.

Produced by Remus for XTM Nation, D’yani reflects on his growth, takes heed of the lessons learned, and shares encouragement for those who need it in, “Journey”. He shares that while we may have missteps in life, we have to keep going, and our time to shine is close. With a music video directed by Samo, D’yani runs through communities sharing his message before concluding in a ball field where he joins a choir. Vybz Kartel Makes It About “God & Time” With 19th Album

Not many Artists can reach the level of “legend” in Jamaican music, but Dancehall Artist Vybz Kartel is one of those Artists who did. From achieving a cult-like following, to adding hits to his name for a couple decades, to becoming a name outside of music, not even Prison could hold him back. Now nearly two years since being free, he’s enjoying life, his family, his fans, and more success that has come his way. It wasn’t an easy journey, and like his new album, he left it to “God & Time“.

Featuring 14 tracks, Vybz Kartel is on another level with the release of his 19th album, “God & Time”. Kartel is still in top form here, showing an appreciation for where he is now, and what more he can achieve. His motivational tracks are present, but his signature girl tunes, and the music that highlights his status and rewarding lifestyle are included as well. TJ Records handles the production with a number of Composers, which include Zack Fostaty, Raphael Vivet, and Redboom Supamix. As for the features, Spice and Skillibeng show up, Vybz goes International with WizKid and Farruko, and he reunites with Shenseea and Mavado. Vybz Kartel is in a good space nowadays, and while he’s being a character thanks to his viral TikTok and Instagram content, it took God and time to get him here. Another level unlocked.

Dancehall Artist Skippa continues to elevate his career. While there may be detractors and conflicts, he’s still getting to the money, and keeping the Studios busy. He recently concluded his UK Tour, and he’s staying up to date with the music releases. Earlier, he released, “Fast Button“.

Produced by Chargie Records/Caado Beatz/Rich Together, Skippa keeps the focus on the riches in, “Fast Button”. Whether getting through stage shows or off the phone, the Deejay has Rolexes to wear, Sports Cars to drive off the lot, and more things to acquire. It takes a lot to be a part of the fast life, and to maintain it as well, and while people will talk, Skippa blocks them out with the sound of the money machine. On May 8 1970, the famed British group The Beatles released their final album, “Let It Be“. Beatlemania was a huge moment in music, and has influenced generations of Musicians and Artists. Consisting of Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Ringo Starr, and George Harrison, The Beatles connected with many worldwide, including Jamaica. Competition was brewing on the Island as well, as there were Artists who believed they could take The Beatles’ place including The Zodiacs, who were once propelled to be a threat to the group in the media. Today, the music is still respected, and tributes from some of your favourite Artists have been performed and recorded. For our latest Playlist, we share the many times Jamaicans covered The Beatles.

In our new Playlist “Jamaica Sings The Beatles“, we feature the many Artists who recorded covers of some of The Beatles’ many classics. From Ernie Smith, to John Holt, to Pat Kelly, to Bob Marley, to Phyllis Dillon, to even Vybz Kartel, you’ll hear covers that you’ve either never heard before, or haven’t heard in a while. It has been 56 years since the group’s final album before splitting up, and their influence is still very strong.
