On May 27, the popular Netflix series “Stranger Things” premiered its 4th season. The series finds a group of kids experiencing various supernatural beings and events in 1980s Indiana. The new season was highly anticipated, and has been one of Netflix’s most watched products. While season 4 highlights plenty 80s aesthetic, the soundtrack also highlights some of the hits from that decade. One of the hits however, is a Reggae classic.

In episodes 4 and 6 of “Stranger Things” season 4, British boy band Musical Youth’s 1982 hit, “Pass The Dutchie” was featured. Produced by Peter Collins, this is a song about facing extreme poverty. This song was redone version of the Mighty Diamonds’ hit “Pass The Kutchie. More info on the track can be found here. The single has been been a historic one as it helped with Musical Youth being the first black group to have appeared in a Studio segment on MTV. We previously highlighted the track being featured in a South Park episode.

It’s a new week, and we give thanks! Have you watched anything over the weekend? Care to share with us? This past weekend, the Showtime Network series, “The First Lady” aired their latest episode. The series is a reframing of American leadership, told through the lens of the Women at the heart of the White House. the series stars Viola Davis, Gillian Anderson, Dakota Fanning, and Michelle Pfeiffer. If you’ve been up to date with the series, a familiar Jamaican song may have caught your ears.

On episode 5 of “The First Lady”, Bob Marley & The Wailers’ “I Shot The Sheriff” made its way in the opening scene. Written by Bob Marley, produced by The Wailers and Chris Blackwell, and released through Island Records/Tuff Gong in 1973, “I Shot The Sheriff” is a chart topping classic. The single was featured on The Wailers’ 1973 album, “Burnin’“. The song has been covered by the likes of Eric Clapton, UB40, Howard Stern and Alpha Blondy, sampled and referenced by the likes of Warren G, Method Man, and Public Enemy, and had a few controversial moments through debates over its lyrics. “The First Lady” is now available for viewing on Showtime.

Recently, Recording Artist Jahmiel released his latest album, “Legend“. With talent that considers him one of the greats, Jahmiel has traveled a lot to get this far. While has made some changes in his life for the better, he still has challenges to deal with everyday. Off of his latest album, he gives us the visual for the track, “Story Of My Life“.

Directed by Xtreme Arts, Jahmiel takes to the hills, and talks to God and the people. “Story Of My Life” is one of the more popular tracks off the album, and Jahmiel does it justice with the visual. “Story Of My Life” was produced by Emudio Records/Sweet Music Production. Expect to hear a lot more from the great Jahmiel in the coming weeks, and check out his “Legend” album which is available everywhere you consume music.

First off, Happy Mother’s Day to all the Moms, Mamas, Grandmas, Aunties, Stepmoms, and every type of Mother. Wishing you all the best! Today on Oldies Sunday, we make a dedication to all of them. For our selection, we highlight Echo Minott’s “My Mommy“.

Produced by Harry “Big J” Johnson and released in 1984 through Shuttle Records (and in 1985 through Sunset Records), Echo Minott delivered a dedication to his Mother, showing immense gratitude in the process. While all of us have a great relationship with their Mother, Echo went into detail the important roles she has played in his life, and even showing love to his Father in some parts. “My Mommy” was well received by fans, and was featured on his 1985 album, “Rock & Calypso“.

After the release of “My Mommy”, Echo Minott went on to release more music before taking a break from the Music Industry in the early 90s, returning with a few releases in the 2010s, an album in 2021 called “Man A Do Road” with DJ Air Afrique, and a single in 2022 with Laurent Squarta.

Today, we celebrate a legend in Reggae/Dancehall. He was one of the Artists who helped to kick off that run of 90s Hip Hop/Reggae/Dancehall collaborations. He gained success during that time, and made classics. That man who we’re featuring on Oldies Sunday is Shinehead. We featured him in this section nearly 10 years ago, but today we celebrate his 60th Birthday (April 10) by featuring his single (and one of this Editor’s favourites), “Try My Love“.

Produced by Dave Hall and featuring background Vocals by R&B group Intro, Shinehead’s “Try My Love” was released through Elektra in 1992. The track finds Shinehead delivering his signature Singjay style as he spits slick lyrics to a young lady he’s admiring. With promises of dates, love, excellent care and treatment, to blowing her mind every time, Shinehead shares that he has what it takes to make her his. All he needs her to do is try his love, and she’ll never need another.

“Try My Love” became one of Shinehead’s popular singles, and was featured on his 1992 Album, “Sidewalk University“. Shinehead is still active in various circles, and can be found rocking the Mic at stage show near you, and releasing new music.

To say that Reggae/Dancehall Artist Bugle is underrated is an understatement. For over a decade, he has been providing nothing but quality music with a positive message that has travelled every part of the globe. As his fanbase continues to grow, his content continues to set the standard. Unfortunately, many do not recognize his greatness, and he has stepped out to address it. He does so in his latest single, “Flowaz“.

Produced by Gold Up Music, Bugle gives us the quality music that we have grown to love and enjoy, but also makes his case on why he deserves respect in the Jamaican music scene. While many are quick to hop on the latest trend or crown the newest sensation, many of the Artists who have been putting in the necessary work are often left out of important conversations. Bugle gives evidence of this through the scenario of an award show with the accompanying Music Video, which was directed by Khing Cam. Many Artists who never get love in their own home, tend to take their talents to other lands where they’re hailed and given accolades. Recognize Artists like Bugle before it’s too late.
