OLDIES SUNDAY: @BigMountainBand – Baby I Love Your Way (1994)


It’s another Oldies Sunday, where we highlight a few classics, and old school songs you’ve never heard before. For today’s selection, we fly over to San Diego, California to check out Reggae Band Big Mountain’sBaby I Love Your Way“.

Produced by Ron Fair, this was released in 1994 through Giant/RCA. Big Mountain’s “Baby I Love Your Way” was a remake of the Peter Frampton’s 1975 single. The remake had a Reggae vibe, which contrasted from the original’s Soft Rock sound. Big Mountain’s version enjoyed chart success peaking at #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart, #2 on the UK Singles Chart, and #1 in Denmark, Spain, and Sweden. The track was included in the soundtrack for the 1994 Rom-Com, “Reality Bites“, and went on to go Platinum in Australia, Silver in the UK, and Gold in the US. The track was featured in Big Mountain’s 3rd album, “Unity“, and remains one of their biggest songs. They also performed the song at Reggae Sunsplash, as they were booked in 1994, and 1995.

Since the release of “Baby I Love Your Way”, Big Mountain went on to release more singles and albums, and continues to remain active performers taking their music to various parts of the world.

Reggae/Dancehall Recording Artist Bugle is set to give the rest of 2022 some of his best work. He has been consistent with the content all year, but this time he’s going for the gold. Last year saw him release the highly acclaimed “Toxicity” album, and he has been following up with content to support the album. Today, he follows it up with the “Toxicity (Deluxe Edition)” album!

Featuring 16 tracks, Bugle eyes even more with the deluxe version of “Toxicity”. Still showing that he’s one of the best to do it, he gives us even more thought-provoking music with strong messages, and even something to get us moving. In preparation for the album’s release, he recently joined AfroDancehall Artist Heph B, and Dancehall Artist Laa Lee for the “Big Boy (Remix)” single. Along with the aforementioned Artists, newcomers joining Bugle on the album is the legendary Marcia Griffiths, Dancehall Artist Ding Dong, and longtime friend and DASECA collaborator Dexta Daps. Previously featured Artists including Bounty Killa, Kabaka Pyramid, Julian Marley, Adeana Myrie, Jesse Royal, and Tony Gold all appear on this follow up project. The legendary Wayne Wonder gets some love on this album, but we’ll let you find out which track he getting the love. If you were a fan of the original version of “Toxicity”, you will more than appreciate the new additions, which make up for a solid release, and a great listen. Bugle has done it again!

OLDIES SUNDAY: Glen Brown – No More Slavery (1975)


Happy “Oldies Sunday“! In recognition of Emancipation Day on August 1st, we have a special selection for you. Going back a few decades, our Oldies Sunday selection comes from Recording Artist/Musician/Producer Glen Brown a.k.a. “God Son” with the track, “No More Slavery“.

Released through Dwyer Records in 1975, “No More Slavery” is an Instrumental release by Glen Brown. Leading with a Melodica, Glen plays notes that may have represented the uplifted moods and the joyous feeling of freedom when Emancipation was declared on August 1, 1838. “No More Slavery” was a part of a long list of tracks that Glen Brown created over the years, and is one of his much respected selections in various parts of the world. Glen Brown would find success in the 1970s, and contribute to many recordings from numerous Artists until he transitioned in October 2019.

Yesterday, Entertainment giant Marvel unveiled the latest phase of their “Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)“. With plenty films and tv shows on the way, fans were looking forward to consume even more stories from their favourite Comics. The rollout included the announcement of the sequel to the popular “Black Panther” film called, “Wakanda Forever“. Announced in the form of a teaser, a familiar song was featured in its soundtrack.

For those familiar with Reggae (who wouldn’t at this point?), the lyrics from Bob Marley’s classic, “No Woman No Cry” was heard in the teaser for “Wakanda Forever”. Instead of Bob’s version, a cover by Nigerian star Tems was put in place. Throughout the over 2 minute teaser, Tems’ cover was played before being mixed into Rapper Kendrick Lamar’sAlright” single. “No Woman No Cry” was written by Bob Marley and Vincent Ford, produced by Chris Blackwell and The Wailers, and was featured on Marley’s 1974 album, “Natty Dread” with The Wailers. A live version of the single was released in 1975, and is considered one of the greatest songs ever made. The track was covered by many including The Fugees, Wizkid, Jimmy Cliff, and Sean Kingston.

Black Panther” was released in 2018, and starred Chadwick Boseman, and Lupita Nyong’o among others. Boseman was set to reprise his role as the African superhero in the sequel, but passed away in 2020 after a long battle with Colon Cancer. “Black Pather: Wakanda Forever” will be released on October 11, 2022.

Anyone familiar with the TV ShowAll Rise“? It’s a Legal Drama that revolves around the personal lives of judges, prosecutors, and public defenders in a Los Angeles courthouse. The series is in its 3rd season on the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN), and for its latest episode (Episode 6 “I’ll Be There”), a classic Reggae song was featured.

In the closing of episode 6 of “All Rise”, Bob Marley & The Wailers’ classic, “Redemption Song” was featured. Released in 1980, “Redemption Song” is considered one of Bob Marley’s greatest works, and one of his most influential. The track was featured on the “Uprising” album, the 12th Bob Marley & the Wailers release, and was used during protests for Apartheid in South and South West Africa, used in tribute to the 9/11 attacks in 2001, and was covered by the likes of Stevie Wonder, U2, John Legend, and Wyclef Jean, and we featured Singer Shav-A covering it recently.

“All Rise” is now available for watching on OWN, Hulu, and HBO Max.

OLDIES SUNDAY: Lone Ranger – Natty Dread On The Go (1977)


How are we doing today? While a lot has been happening in the past few days, the music continues to flow. Oldies Sunday, will always show up when needed as well. Today’s selection comes from Recording Artist Lone Ranger with the track, “Natty Dread On The Go“!

Produced by Sir Coxsone Dodd and released through the Studio One label in 1977, Lone Ranger steps out with some melodic deejaying on “Natty Dread On The Go”, and displayed a musical style that started to grow in those times. With his “A1 sound“, Ranger kicks off clever lyrics that were sure to entertain the listener. “Natty Dread On The Go” was featured on his debut album, “On the Other Side Of Dub“, which was released in 1977. The track gained new life recently when it was featured in season 4 of the popular Netflix Sci-Fi series, “Stranger Things“.

Since the release of “Natty Dread On The Go”, Lone Ranger went on to release more music, lived between the US, UK, and Jamaica, and made a return to his Sound System roots. His “Natty Dread On The Go” single looks to connect with a new generation of music lovers, and open up the doors for more to discover his music.
