.@TrvisXX Samples Shyne & Barrington Levy For “Jackboys 2” Album

Over the weekend, US Rapper Travis Scott released the new album, “Jackboys 2“. Done in collaboration with his “Cactus Jack” collective, the new album has been receiving a lot of attention on Social Media. One song in particular on the album, “Shyne“, has been met with a variety of comments.

“Shyne” features Memphis Rapper Glorilla, and is one of the closing tracks on the new “Jackboys 2” album. Since its release, it has drawn quite the attention online. The track sampled the 2000 single, “Bad Boyz” from US/Belize Rapper Shyne. Produced by Ez Elpee and sampled Grace Jones’Nightclubbin“, “Bad Boyz” features Reggae/Dancehall legend Barrington Levy (whose “Broader Than Broadway” was also sampled on the track), and showcases a great example of culture blending, and Caribbean vibes in one of the biggest melting pots of the world. Travis Scott’s track finds him not only sampling the production, but attempting to copy Barrington Levy’s signature “Shibbily dabbily” style that was performed on the original. Scott joins a number of Artists who sampled “Bad Boyz”, and they include Lady London, Sean Price, and Cassidy. We hope the business was handled right in regards of sampling this classic. “Jackboys 2” also features a collaboration with Vybz Kartel called “PBT, and the album is out now on all streaming platforms.

Vybz Kartel Joins @TrvisXX & @Tyllaaaaaaa On “PBT” Track

On Sunday July 13, US Rapper Travis Scott released the latest project, “Jackboys 2“. The new album is a group project from he and his “Cactus Jack” collective, and it so far has gained mixed reviews. The tracklist was already looking promising prior to release, but many weren’t ready for this collaboration on the track, “PBT“.

Produced by Bbykobe, Travis Scott enlists the “World BossVybz Kartel, and South African star Tyla for the track, “PBT”. The song borrows inspiration from Drake’s 2016 single “Controlla“, and it gives a bit of Dancehall and AfroFusion vibes throughout. The guest Artists were originally unlisted on the album’s tracklist, and comes as a surprise for many listeners. In the days leading up to the release of “Jackboys 2”, Scott shared a number of photos on Social Media with Artists posing with a special colourway of the Lamborghini Huracan. The posts would suggest that Vybz Kartel, along with 21 Savage, Sofaygo, Wallie The Sensei, and others would appear on the album, and the vehicles were gifts for their participation. “PBT” is one of the stand out tracks on the album, and would be a bit of a full circle for Scott as he collaborated with Kartel’s protégé Popcaan in 2012 on the track, “Blocka“. “Jackboys 2” is out now.

OLDIES SUNDAY: Johnny Nash – Hold Me Tight (1968)

February is recognized as “Reggae Month” in Jamaica, and in parts of the world. It is also Black History Month, and on “Oldies Sunday“, we’re celebrating Black Music. Today, we highlight History as we go back to the 1960s to check out American Reggae/Pop/Soul Singer Johnny Nash and his track, “Hold Me Tight“.

Co-Produced with Arthur Jenkins and released through JAD Records in 1968, Johnny Nash is making up with him lady through song in “Hold Me Tight”. Nash admits his mistakes throughout the relationship, and realizes that his lady is the right one for him, so he’s going to do all the right things to make the their union better. “Hold Me Tight” created History as being one of the first Rocksteady singles to be performed and released by a non-Jamaican, and it went on to become a top 5 hit in North America (securing a #1 in Canada), and earning a top 5 placement in the UK. It also paved the way for Nash to release even more Reggae/Rocksteady singles. “Hold Me Tight” was used in Commercials for the Score brand, was sampled by Tanya Stephens and Spragga Benz, and covered by the likes of Gregory Isaacs, Eddie Lovette, Anthony Swete, and Anita Harris.

Since the release of “Hold Me Tight”, Johnny Nash continued to release more albums and singles until the early 80s where he seemed to have disappeared from the spotlight. His career enjoyed some resurgence during the 90s, and started singing again in the 2000s. Johnny Nash passed away in October 2020 after his health started to decline for years. “Hold Me Tight” remains one of his most popular singles to date, and a part of Jamaican Music History.

Thank You Johnny Nash For This Classic!

OLDIES SUNDAY: Love Joys – All I Can Say (1981)

It’s a new month, and we’re glad to be here providing music for you to enjoy on “Oldies Sunday“. Since its inception, we’ve highlighted classic singles, guilty pleasures, underrated hits, and allowed our audience to get familiar with music they’ve never heard before. This Sunday is no different as today we feature UK-based Reggae duo Love Joys, and their single, “All I Can Say“.

Produced by Lloyd Barnes a.k.a. Bullwackie for the Wackie’s label and released in 1981, Love Joys were all about making the world a better place in “All I Can Say”. The cousin duo of Sonia Abel and Claudette Brown encouraged listeners to live a better life, call out those who do wrong, and hope and pray that things get better for us all. Over some solid production, the pair deliver conscious messages along with some melodies. “All I Can Say” was featured on their 1981 album, “Reggae Vibes“, and their official 1982 debut album “Lovers Rock (Reggae Style)“. The song became a hit for the duo, and became known in Jamaica, and various parts of the world. It was sampled in 2024 by Texas Rapper BigXThaPlug for his track “Havin Freestye“, which featured Ro$ama and Yung Hood, and produced by Tony Coles. “All I Can Say” was also featured on hit Video Game “Saints Row” through the in-game radio station.

Since the release of “All I Can Say”, not much was heard from Love Joys. The duo was recognized as one of the first all-Female Roots Reggae groups, but they disbanded in the 1980s. In the 2000s, Sonia Abel (now Sonia “Marla” Allen) would create the duo Natti Love Joys with her Husband Anthony “Jatti” Allen. “All I Can Say” is still remembered by fans, and “Saints Row” gamers.

OLDIES SUNDAY: Papa Reu Ft. Lil Keke – Diamonds And Pearls (2000)

The Caribbean has created, and dabbled in various musical genres over the decades, and they have turned into hits, or significant moments in the culture. There used to be a demographic that frowned upon the idea of Caribbean Artists doing Hip Hop Music, but over the years it has become the norm, with hits being made from some of the releases. For today’s Oldies Sunday selection, we highlight an Artist who used his Caribbean background to be a part of Hip Hop History. Hailing from Trinidad & Tobago, his name is Papa Reu, and we look back his track, “Diamonds And Pearls“.

Released through Reu Muzik in 2000 and featuring Houston Rap legend Lil Keke, Papa Reu had the ladies in mind for his single, “Diamonds And Pearls”. With Reu’s blend of Hip Hop and Dancehall deliveries, he melodically shares that he will provide a life filled love, happiness, loyalty, and splendour for the lady who falls for him, while Keke outlines in intentions in his segment. The production samples Evelyn “Champagne” King’s 1982 hit “Love Come Down“. “Diamonds And Pearls” became a hit for Papa Reu in various parts of the U.S. including Houston, Texas where he was based, and was featured on his 2000 debut album, “Xcuse Me!“, and Lil Keke’s “From Coast To Coast” project.

Since the release of “Diamonds And Pearls”, Papa Reu became a name etched in the History of Southern Hip Hop. He released more music over the years, and with his blend of Dancehall and Hip Hop, he was featured on a number of tracks with the likes of 504 Boyz, Lil Wayne, Juvenile, 8Ball & MJG, Rick Ross, Solange Knowles, Chamillionaire, Scarface, and many more.
