.@Skillibeng Drops Surprise “I’ll Never Die” EP!

Dancehall Artist Skillibeng has been having one of his best years yet. With his music taking him to big stages like Rolling Loud, Something In The Water, and the Wireless Festival, Skilli found the formula to put his music on a Plane, and watch it take off. With collaborations from the likes of DJ Khaled, Ice Spice, WSTRN, and Mura Masa, the world is there for the taking for Skillibeng, and he’s locked in. Earlier today, he surprised everyone with the release of his “I’ll Never DieEP.

Currently a Youtube exclusive, Skillibeng’s “I’ll Never Die” EP features 5 tracks, and may just be a teaser to a new album. Nothing groundbreaking from Skillibeng here, as he has been tapping into more of the Trap Music/Drill vibe on previous efforts. Overall, his flow is still unique, and he’s not fixing what’s not broken. Though this is not the first time Skillibeng has done surprise releases, the project can hold listeners over until the announcement of even more music. At the end of the day, it’s new Skillibeng, so get familiar!

Laden Shares His “Jailhouse Story”!

It’s never easy when life is spent behind bars. While some may have the privilege of treating it like a “home away from home“, others are not so lucky. Dancehall Artist Laden, who was enjoying life in music, had to face the consequences of his action when he was sentenced to 4 years for illegal gun possession, and 18 months for possession of ammunition. His presence may be missed on the scene, but he holds on through the new track, “Jailhouse Story“.

Produced by Armzhouse Records, Laden takes us to the day he was locked up, to his current state behind bars. While he shared some of what has been happening including missing out on his daughter’s graduation, he is sorry that life has lead him to this situation. He acknowledges that he is missed by friend, family, and fans, and he emphasizes that “Freedom is a must“, with him returning to the outside world soon. Despite what got him there, we hope Laden is keeping it together, and staying creative.

Eddy Grant "Gimme Hope Jo'Anna" on 13thStreetPromotions.com #Guyana #UK #SouthAfrica #Music WorldBeat #13thStreetPromotions #EddyGrant #Apartheid #1988 #Africa #Caribbean #Yoplait #DonaldTrump #NationalParty #FileUnderRock #BarefootSoldier

OLDIES SUNDAY: @Eddy_Grant – Gimme Hope Jo’Anna (1988)

Today, we give thanks for the progress we have made as a people, especially People Of Colour. While we have had our share of slip ups, we’ve made historic moves, and changed lives for better overall. Today on Oldies Sunday, we want to recognize a contribution to positive change. Today, we highlight Guyanese-born Recording Artist/Producer/Musician Eddy Grant and his track, “Gimme Hope Jo’Anna“.

A self-produced track that was released in 1988 through Parlophone/EMI, “Gimme Hope Jo’Anna” found Eddy Grant doing his part in promoting change for Black people and other people of colour. Released during the Apartheid era in South Africa (an Institutionalized racial segregation that existed there from 1948 to the 1990s), Eddy Grant cleverly penned lyrics speaking out for the end of Apartheid, making references to Archbishop Desmond Tutu who fought against it, highlighting the South African cities of Durban, Soweto, Province of the Transvaal, and personifying Johannesburg, the largest South African city that was symbolic of the National Party government that fostered Apartheid.

“Gimme Hope Jo’Anna” was not intended to be a hit single for Eddy Grant who returned to music after a brief hiatus, but it became an anti-Apartheid anthem that expressed change in South Africa, and brought International attention to South Africa. It enjoyed chart success in Europe, became popular in the UK, and was soon banned by the National Party (they later removed the ban to use it during their campaign for the 1994 South Africa general election). Despite its ban, “Gimme Hope” already did what needed to be done, contributing to the end of the racial segregation in the early 1990s. The track was included in Eddy Grant’s 1988 “File Under Rock” and 1990’s “Barefoot Soldier” albums, and is one of the most important songs of its time. The track was also performed in various parts of the world including India as it represented a different message, it was performed for the late Nelson Mandela for his 90th birthday, and was referenced in various sporting moments. “Gimme Hope Jo’Anna” was a part of more controversy in the early 2000s when an adopted version was used in a promotional campaign for Yoplait. The track also found popularity on Social Media platform TikTok.

Since the release of “Gimme Hope Jo’Anna”, Eddy Grant released more music. Now living in Barbados since the 1980s, he runs the Blue Wave Studio, introduced a new genre of music called “Ringbang“, pursued other businesses, received a Lifetime Achievement Award in Guyana, and even sued Donald Trump for the unauthourized use of his hit single “Electric Avenue” for a campaign. Eddy Grant has enjoyed a successful music career, with “Gimme Hope Jo’Anna” being one of his most important songs.

Thank You Eddy Grant For This Classic!

Sizzla’s “Wrath” Single Goes Viral On @TikTok_US!

Social Media platform TikTok has been the go-to for many Content Creators and Musicians to gain viral success, and grow their following. Earlier this year, we highlighted Dancehall Artist Shenseea’sPon Mi” becoming a fixture thanks to a series of remixes on TikTok, now Dancehall/Reggae Recording Artist Sizzla Kalonji is gaining a new audience thanks to his 2004 single “Wrath” becoming a trending sound.

Produced by the late Daniel “Blaxxx” Lewis, and Andrew Bradford a.k.a. Dancehall Artist Buccaneer on the “Blackout Riddim“, “Wrath” was Sizzla in one of his most aggressive states. The song’s content dealt with being on guard at all times, Sizzla avoiding becoming a target for Law Enforcement, and various individuals and groups who wish for his demise, and it quickly became a hit for the Artist.

This past Summer, Tiktoker Kalise Brooks used Sizzla’s “Wrath” line “Me nuh waan no r***cl**t man back a me” for a video sharing her displeasure for her partner wanting to be a part of her “Girls’ Night Out, and it quickly took off. With over 720 videos released, “Wrath” was used by the likes of Comedian Babajaay, Sheneik The Menace, Educator/Recording Artist/Actor SirPlus, and Recording Artist 1Bynz all sharing hilarious scenarios. If you’ve been enjoying the content, let us know your favourite ones.

UPDATE

Kalise Brooks, the Creator of the TikTok trend, shared how it all came about.

I was just at home and Sizzla’s voice came to me with the concept. I asked my son what he thought about it and he said, ‘Yes mommy that’s funny, you should do it’. So I did it, and my son edited it and uploaded it up for me lol…and I kept seeing a lot of people liking it and commenting, and then he said, ‘Mommy people using your sound!’. I found out through a friend that your Article about the trend was featured on (IG) @Augusttown876’s page. ♥️♥️♥️♥️ Blessed love for the highlight.
