It’s New Year’s Eve, and many are out and about, preparing to ring in 2024. Some will be staying home, some will be going to Night Church, and others will be partying it up. For today’s final Oldies Sunday of 2023, we highlight a classic that has found its way in sets of many DJs at the NYE party. We check out The Paragons’ “Wear You To The Ball“.

Produced by Duke Reid and backed by Tommy McCook & The Supersonics, The Paragons’ “Wear You To The Ball” was released in 1967 through the Treasure Isle label. The single was a blend of great harmonies and powerful Instrumentation as the Singers Bob Andy, John Holt, Howard Barrett, and Garth “Tyrone” Evans sang about taking their lady to the Ball. Ballroom events usually bring out the stars, the song suggests that the lucky lady will be a standout all night. “Wear You To The Ball” quickly became a hit for the quartet, and is recognized as one of their most successful ones. The single was covered by the likes of UB40, Horace Andy, Johnny Clarke, and sampled by Anthony Malvo.

As 2023 comes to an end in a few hours, we hope 2024 brings more good than bad. Many of us faced some of our worst times this year, may the new year bring something positive. Here’s to more wins.

OLDIES SUNDAY: Desmond Dekker & The Aces – 007 (Shanty Town) (1967)

With talks of protests happening in Jamaica in the past couple of days, and the upcoming release of the Film, “No Time To Die“, today’s Oldies Sunday seeks to blend the two. Today’s selection comes from the great Desmond Dekker with the track, “007 (Shanty Town)“.

Produced by Leslie Kong and released through the Pyramid label in 1967, Desmond Dekker with the help of The Aces shared some of his observations during that time. The song spoke about the “rude boys” of the time who continued their life of crime as soon as they’re released from Prison. The activities of the rude boys would cause a ruckus in certain communities, and the armed forces would be called to tackle the situation. “007 (Shanty Town)” was a hit for Desmond Dekker, a first for him really. Having achieved #1 status on the local music charts, and created history as being the first Jamaican-produced song to chart in the UK Top 20 peaking at #14. The song was also popular with the “rude boys” as well. There was an original version that made no reference to “Shanty Town”, which was also produced by Leslie Kong. The track was featured on Dekker’s debut album of the same name with The Aces, and on the soundtrack for the classic Film, “The Harder They Come“. It was also rerecorded for his 1980 album, “Black and Dekker“.

“007 (Shanty Town)” was inspired by a student demonstration that turned violent against the government’s decision to erect an Industrial Complex on a plot of land close to a beach in the mid 60s. The song also made references to Ian Fleming’s “James Bond” spy movie series, and the popular 1960’s “Ocean’s 11” heist Film. After “007”, Desmond Dekker went on to make more music, and rack up more hits along the way. Desmond Dekker passed away in 2006 at the age of 64, but his music continues to live on.

NEW VIDEO: Hopeton Lewis’ “Take It Easy” Featured In @Corona Commercial!

Recently, Corona Extra, the product of Grupo Modelo in Mexico, recently unveiled their latest Commercial as a part of their Corona Summer 2016 campaign. The video, which features a travelling Corona Beer can, uses the late Rocksteady Artist Hopeton Lewis’ 1966/67 hit, “Take It Easy (Get It Here)“. The single was produced by Sam Mitchell for the Merritone Label and was considered the song that heralded the ascension of Rocksteady music movement. Hopeton Lewis was also known to record in Jamaica the first ever song about Marijuana (Cool Collie), and had a good run of hits in the late 60’s and early 70’s. Lewis was also the founder of the Hopeton Lewis Caribbean Gospel Music Awards and owner of Caribbean Gospel Jubilee (CGJ), an Online Radio Station. OLDIES SUNDAY: Alton Ellis – Willow Tree (1967)

After dropping Raine Seville’s “Willow Tree” yesterday, I felt it was only right to play one of the original songs. Today I feature a song by the late Alton Ellis a.k.a. the GodFather of Rocksteady. Titled “Willow Tree” and produced by Coxsone Records in 1967, this was a cover of Chuck Jackson’s “My Willow Tree” which was done in 1962 but never made it to the music charts. This song is about finding new song all while sparing the “Willow Tree” from sharing the pain of past failed relationships.
