OLDIES SUNDAY: Buccaneer – Bruk Out (@Rancid Remix) (1998)

Yesterday, we highlighted an Artist that released a Post-Punk single done in Patois. While we made the argument that Jamaicans are capable of doing anything including dabbling in musical genres that may be out of the norm, we wanted to drive that point even further for today’s Oldies Sunday selection. Today we feature Dancehall Artist/Producer Buccaneer’sBruk Out (Rancid Remix)“.

Produced by Punk Rock Band Rancid, Buccaneer’s “Bruk Out (Rancid Remix)” was released in 1998 through Main Street Records. The original “Bruk Out” was released in the same year, but was produced by Danny Browne on the “Heavy Metal Riddim“. The track was aimed for the ladies who carried themselves well in and out the streets, who oozed sex appeal, and stood out from the rest. The original version was a hit for Buccaneer, but the Rancid version helped to bring in a new audience for him locally and Internationally. Buccaneer previously dabbled in Opera, Pop, and Hip Hop tracks, so tapping into Rock/Punk Rock was normal for him. Both versions of “Bruk Out” were featured on the 1998 album “Da Opera“, and the Rancid version was featured on the “Give ‘Em The Boot II” compilation album by Hellcat Records.

Since the release of “Bruk Out (Rancid Remix)”, Buccaneer continued to have some success as an Artist and Producer over the years. He showed many to think outside of the box, and he is still recognized for his contributions. Time to bruk out bruk out!

Toian on "Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse" on 13thStreetPromotions.com #Jamaica #Dancehall #PopMusic #13thStreetPromotions #SpiderMan #SpiderVerse #SpiderManAcrossTheSpiderVerse #Toian #Caribbean

.@ItsToian Featured On @SpiderVerse Soundtrack With @MetroBoomin, @RedRatMusic Classic Gets Sampled

Dancehall-Pop Recording Artist Toian has been on the grind. Been a while since we featured her, but she has been putting the work behind the scenes. Based in Miami, she secured a number of collaborations, and released a project or two. Remember her Ice Queen” collab with Vybz Kartel? “Ride The Wave“? What about “Rude Boys“? Her name has been called up recently in what you could call one of her biggest career moves, and that’s making the connection with SuperProducer Metro Boomin, and the highly anticipated “Spider-Man: Across The Spider-VerseFilm.

Teaming up with WizKid, Beam, Don Toliver, and Metro Boomin, Toian jumped on the “Spider-Verse Remix” of “Link Up“. With a mix of Pop, Afrobeats, and Red Rat’sTight Up Skirt” sample, Toian’s here for the link up, but don’t catch no feelings. She fits well with her collaborators, bringing her sweet vocals, making for a nice addition to the featured production. Red Rat’s “Tight Up Skirt” was released in 1997 and produced by Buccaneer on the Opera House label, and was famously sampled by Samantha J. Expect a lot more from Toian in the future, maybe she’ll pop up on more collabs with your favourite Artists, or even have more of her music featured in Films. Congrats to the big Singer!

Sizzla’s “Wrath” Single Goes Viral On @TikTok_US!

Social Media platform TikTok has been the go-to for many Content Creators and Musicians to gain viral success, and grow their following. Earlier this year, we highlighted Dancehall Artist Shenseea’sPon Mi” becoming a fixture thanks to a series of remixes on TikTok, now Dancehall/Reggae Recording Artist Sizzla Kalonji is gaining a new audience thanks to his 2004 single “Wrath” becoming a trending sound.

Produced by the late Daniel “Blaxxx” Lewis, and Andrew Bradford a.k.a. Dancehall Artist Buccaneer on the “Blackout Riddim“, “Wrath” was Sizzla in one of his most aggressive states. The song’s content dealt with being on guard at all times, Sizzla avoiding becoming a target for Law Enforcement, and various individuals and groups who wish for his demise, and it quickly became a hit for the Artist.

This past Summer, Tiktoker Kalise Brooks used Sizzla’s “Wrath” line “Me nuh waan no r***cl**t man back a me” for a video sharing her displeasure for her partner wanting to be a part of her “Girls’ Night Out, and it quickly took off. With over 720 videos released, “Wrath” was used by the likes of Comedian Babajaay, Sheneik The Menace, Educator/Recording Artist/Actor SirPlus, and Recording Artist 1Bynz all sharing hilarious scenarios. If you’ve been enjoying the content, let us know your favourite ones.

UPDATE

Kalise Brooks, the Creator of the TikTok trend, shared how it all came about.

I was just at home and Sizzla’s voice came to me with the concept. I asked my son what he thought about it and he said, ‘Yes mommy that’s funny, you should do it’. So I did it, and my son edited it and uploaded it up for me lol…and I kept seeing a lot of people liking it and commenting, and then he said, ‘Mommy people using your sound!’. I found out through a friend that your Article about the trend was featured on (IG) @Augusttown876’s page. ♥️♥️♥️♥️ Blessed love for the highlight.
