OLDIES SUNDAY: La Lupe – Puro Teatro (1969)

Welcome to the month of March, and it’s the start of “Women’s History Month“. On “Oldies Sunday“, we highlight a number of Women who have made significant contributions to music. Today, we salute the Island of Cuba, and we feature La Lupe, one of the Island’s most energetic Vocalists, and “The Queen Of Latin Soul“. We check out her track, “Puro Teatro“.

Released through Tico Records in 1969, La Lupe sings about a love that wasn’t real from the start, but she fell for the charm in, “Puro Teatro (Pure Theater)”. Known for her powerful vocals, Lupe commanded the listener’s attention immediately, as she shares her disappointment in this affair. “Puro Teatro” was featured on the 1969 album, “La Lupe Es La Reina“, and is loved by many fans worldwide. Having established her presence in Boleros, Guarachas, and Latin Soul, her live performances would at times shock viewers because her voice was so powerful, but it didn’t stop her from getting bookings, and collaborations with some of the best Musicians and Artists in her time.

Since the release of “Puro Teatro”, La Lupe went on to become a big name with a number of albums and singles to her name. Her popularity went on the decline in the late 1960s/70s due to the rise of Salsa Music, and by 1980, she would retire due to religious reasons. Life wasn’t always kind to her over time, and in 1992 she passed away at the age of 55. La Lupe continues to be inspired by a number of Artists, and lives on in music and Film.

THANK YOU LA LUPE FOR THIS TIMELESS SONG!

OLDIES SUNDAY: @GloriaEstefan – Coming Out Of The Dark (1991)

In recognition of Women’s History Month, we take the time out to feature Women who have made great contributions to our music culture. While we celebrate the Women all year over here, we recognize some through our Oldies Sunday section. For today’s selection, we head on over to Miami to check out Cuban-American Pop Artist Gloria Estefan’sComing Out Of The Dark“.

Produced by Emilio Estefan Jr., Jorge Casas, and Clay Ostwald, “Coming Out Of The Dark” was released through Epic Records in 1991. The track finds Gloria Estefan overcoming challenges, and emerging it a triumphant person. The song is the first release for Estefan since recovering from her near-tragic accident on March 20, 1990. The accident was a result of her Tour Bus colliding with an 18-Wheeler Truck. It left her with a broken back that had to go through delicate repair, and the event left many in deep shock as Estefan was at the height of the success of her Debut album, “Cuts Both Ways“. “Coming Out Of The Dark” was featured on her sophomore album, “Into The Light“, and secured #1 placements on the Billboard Hot 100 and Adult Contemporary charts, #1 placements in Canada, and top 10 charting in various charts around the World. the track also won BMI and ASCAP Pop Music Awards in 1992. A Spanish version the track called, “Desde La Oscuridad” was released soon after, and was well received in Latin America.

Since the release of “Coming Out Of The Dark”, Gloria Estefan went on to secure more hits in her career. She also received stars on the Hollywood and Las Vegas Walk Of Fame respectively, awarded the Presidential Medal Of Freedom, was inducted in the Songwriters Hall Of Fame, and has inspired many Latin Artists, and people around the World. Gloria Estefan remains a champion, a survivor, and a powerful Woman.

Thank YOU GLORIA ESTEFAN For This CLASSIC!

Celia Cruz "Bemba Colora" on 13thStreetPromotions.com #Cuba #CeliaCruz #AfroLatina #AfroCuban #QueenOfSalsa #LaReinaDeLaSalsa #Caribbean #WomensHistoryMonth #WomensMonth

OLDIES SUNDAY: @CeliaCruz – Bemba Colora (1966)

This March on Oldies Sunday, we recognize it as Women’s History Month. We salute the many Women who have taken big steps, and left amazing legacies. Today, we head over to Cuba to salute the “Queen Of Salsa” or “La Reina De La Salsa“, and “La Guarachera De Cuba“, Celia Cruz! We look back at her single, “Bemba Colora“.

Originally composed by Jose Claro Fumero, “Bemba Colora” was released in 1966 through Tico Records. The song possessed a strong anti-racist message, a bit of storytelling, and celebrated a proud African heritage as “Bemba Colora” meant “big red lips/red mouth“, which is a distinct feature of many Black people. The song features a heavy dose of percussion and horns, and will have anyone breaking out in dance. “Bemba Colora” was a hit for Celia Cruz, later on becoming one of her signature songs. “Bemba Colora” was featured on Cruz’s 1966 album, “Son con Guaguancó“.

Celia Cruz would become one of the faces of the then growing Latin Music movement overseas, mastering many forms of Afro-Cuban music styles over time. Celia Cruz has inspired generations of Latin Artists, and her presence is still felt to this day. She is still celebrated around the world, with special tributes being presented yearly. “Celia Cruz Day” is celebrated in San Francisco, California on October 25, and she has a few Schools and roads named after her in her honour.

thank you celia cruz!
