OLDIES SUNDAY: Richie Stephens – Come To Jamaica (2007)

It’s Independence Day in Jamaica, and we celebrate Jamaica 61 on “Oldies Sunday“! This year we get two days of Independence celebrations, and we urge our readers to be safe on the road. Today’s selection comes from Richie Stephens with the track, “Come To Jamaica“.

Co-Produced with Danny Browne and released on the Pot Of Gold label in 2007, “Come To Jamaica” is one of the unofficial anthems of Jamaica by Richie Stephens. Throughout the track, Stephens is inviting outsiders to come and experience the Island, and all that it has to offer. With a great vocal delivery and a backup that help to steer this performance in the right place, “Come To Jamaica” instantly became a hit for Stephens. He had a track record of highlighting Jamaica in the best way through song, and this track was just another addition to the lineup. “Come To Jamaica” was featured on the 2008 album of the same name. The song was also remixed for CVM TV to promote their channel (“Looking in, looking out, looking even better…“).

Since the release of “Come To Jamaica”, Richie Stephens continued to have a music career that was already legendary. “Come To Jamaica” remains a favourite for many.

Thank You Richie Stephens For This Hit!

OLDIES SUNDAY: Red Rat – Shelly Ann (1996)

When it comes to your reputation, many will go all out to protect it. When rumors are spread about you, it can be a very dangerous thing. Today’s Oldies Sunday selection dabbles a little of both of those situations. Today, we highlight a classic from Dancehall Artist Red Rat called, “Shelly Ann“.

Produced by Danny Browne on the “Scandal Riddim“, and released through the Main Street label in 1996. On the track, Red Rat shares with the world the story of a young Woman named Shelly Ann who has built a reputation for herself. Whether true or false, the rumors about her being very promiscuous, gives sexual favors for just about anything, and not having any ambition outside of having many men were spread far and wide. Despite all that’s going on, her Mother is unaware of her Daughter’s activities, and it would get ugly if she was to find out.

“Shelly Ann” though controversial, was a hit for Red Rat, and helped to pave the way for a successful music career. “Shelly Ann” was featured on his 1997 debut album, “Oh No…It’s Red Rat“, and is still one of the Artist’s most recognized singles. Since the release of “Shelly Ann”, Red Rat scored a few more hits, and is still active in the Dancehall circles. Be wary of the rumors spread about you. Oh no! Poor Shelly Ann.

thank you Red Rat for this classic!

*Thanks to Genelle Golding for requesting a Red Rat single for this series!

OLDIES SUNDAY: Browne Bunch/Brownie Bunch – Blue Skies (1991)

It’s Wedding SZN! For the month of June, Oldies Sunday will feature some love songs that can be a great addition to your Wedding Playlists, and could be the official song to dance to. Today we look back at the 5 Brother group Browne Bunch (a.k.a. Brownie) and their single, “Blue Skies“! With them all handling production and released through the Island Treasure label in 1991, the brothers Danny, Glen, Cleveland, Dalton, and Noel delivered a dedication to that special someone, and letting them know that they are their life’s purpose. To have someone who knows every side of you, and to help you become a better person is truly a blessing, don’t take it for granted.

Starting out as a teen sibling music group in the 70’s like The Jackson 5 and The Sylvers, they had a short stint before disbanding later in the decade. Their paths in music after, though broad, always lead them back together. They’ve made attempts to regroup in 1983 and 2015, but scheduling conflicts have put a damper on things. Danny Browne went on to become a legendary Producer, founder of the Bloodfire Posse group and Mainstreet Records, and recently had his work sampled by the likes of Nicki Minaj (more on that here). Glen Browne has worked with Jimmy Cliff, Ziggy Marley, and Tarrus Riley and has become a legendary Bass Player. Cleveland Browne went on to become a legend himself as the other half of the production duo, “Steely & Clevie“, with an outstanding track record in Jamaican music. Noel Browne took his talents as a Keyboard Player to the UK, and has worked with many inlcuding the late Dennis Brown, Glen Washington, and Papa San. Dalton Browne has been the go to Guitarist for many, and has worked with Freddie McGregor as his Musical Director, and even worked with Akon on his album, “Konvicted”.

Nicki Minaj is looking to cause problems with new music! While she has been enjoying the success of her “Queen” album, and promoting it worldwide, she’s looking to take over this summer with the new single, “Megatron“! While she kicks things off with a Mike Ho directed video, a familiar Jamaican Riddim can be heard throughout the Pop Wansel and NOVA Wav production. It is none other than Jamaican Producer Danny Browne’sFilthy Riddim“! Released in 1998 through his Mainstreet Records, it is one of the latest Dancehall Riddims to have enjoyed sampling by a huge International Artist (In 2016, Richie Stephens’ “Sail Away Riddim” was sampled on Rihanna’s hit, “Work“!).

Deejay Shabba Ranks’Ting A Ling” was also sampled on “Megatron”. The track was released in 1992, and produced by Production duo Steely & Clevie (Who is Danny’s brother by the way) on the “Gi-Gi Riddim“. Knowing Nicki Minaj’s pull, expect “Megatron” to be streamed millions of times. Danny Browne’s “Filthy Riddim” featured the hits, “Heads High” by Mr. Vegas, “Breeze Off” by Lady G., and General Degree’sTraffic Blocking“. Stay tuned to the Blog for a follow up Article.
