If you’re a listener of Dancehall Music, then you’ve heard the name “Shabba Ranks” before. One of the greatest Dancehall Artists that ever stepped on stage, we’ve called him “The Grammy Kid“, “Emperor Ranks“, and “Big Dutty Stinking Shabba” to name a few. As child he was one of the few Deejays I’ve looked up to, when he dropped music videos and stage performances I was glued to the TV screen despite my family complaining of how “slack” his music was. Today, on Oldies Sunday I present to you a few of his songs, and the singles that have sampled/paid tribute to him. What are your favourite Shabba Ranks singles? Let us know in the comments section. After being away from a Jamaican studio in years, Shabba Ranks got back to his roots and released a new single. Titled “Big Time” and produced by JukeBoxx Productions on the “Greatest Creation Riddim“, the veteran Deejay shows us that he has what it takes to still rock the microphone. He also tells us that he’s needed in Dancehall Music and will always “give it to dem” when he’s summoned. Many were delighted to hear Shabba pick up the microphone after hearing him on Rapper A$AP Ferg’s “Shabba (Remix)” so will this new single mean there’ll be more in store? Recently Deejay Shabba Ranks made a visit to Jamaica but during his short stay he managed to do what he hasn’t done locally in decades…record music. Traveling with a mob in Half Way Tree, Winford Williams managed to catch Shabba to speak on a few things. Here Shabba spoke about being in Jamaica to celebrate Mother’s Day, recording in Jamaica for the first time in many years, visiting his old communities, his views on Dancehall recently including the conviction of Vybz Kartel, family life, and possibilities of performing in Jamaica again. Good to see Shabba still doing his thing and his new single sounds great from the preview that was provided. Get together that “Gorilla Money” promoters.
