OLDIES SUNDAY: Lil Vicious – Nika (1994)

In recognition of May being “Child’s Month“, Oldies Sunday will be highlighting a few child stars who made some noise in music. Today’s first selection comes from Brooklyn born Rapper/Dancehall Artist Lil Vicious with his 1994 hit, “Nika“! Produced by DJ Clark Kent and released through Epic Street/Sony Records, we find Vicious giving us bars about his new love interest, Nika, and rocking the crowd throughout the song. With lyrics about Marriage, dating, and even having kids, teenage Vicious was ahead of his time with his grown up bars then. He doesn’t understand why his parents love her though. “Nika” was featured on the Rapper’s debut album, “Destination Brooklyn“.

“Nika” was a hit for the Artist as it peaked at #9 on the Billboard Hot Rap singles chart, and #69 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song also featured samples of US Music group The Isley Brothers’Between The Sheets“, Rapper Big Daddy Kane’sSomethin’ Funky“, and an interpolation of Dancehall Artist Beenie Man’sWorld Dance“. Since the release of “Nika”, Vicious kept rapping despite not gaining another hit, and even got mentioned on the late Notorious B.I.G.’s “You’re Nobody (‘Till Somebody Kills You)“.

OLDIES SUNDAY: Born Jamericans – Yardcore (1996)

On Oldies Sunday, we highlight and celebrate those who have made their contributions into pushing Jamaica’s music culture worldwide over the decades, whether they’re natives of the Island or not. Today’s selection comes from the Hip Hop/Reggae/Dancehall duo, Born Jamericans (Edley Shine and Notch) with their single, “Yardcore“! Produced by Rahiem and Notch, this was released in 1996 through the Delicious Vinyl label. On the track, despite being born in the US to Jamaican Immigrants, they both celebrate their Caribbean heritage and share how it has influenced their life and music. With that said, they came crashing in from the “heart of Babylon” with their “Yardcore” slang and style of music to rock the world.

“Yardcore” was the first single off their 2nd and final studio album of the same name which was released in 1997. Since its release it has enjoyed significant airplay, enjoying a top ten entry on the U.S. Rap charts, and entering the U.S. R&B charts in the top 50 slot. The single was also remixed a few times including one from top Jamaican Producer Dave Kelly. While they followed up with more music, the duo parted ways in 1999. Both being solo acts, they went on to release their own type of music as Notch dabbled in Reggaeton, and Edley kept it Hip Hop and Dancehall (and even tried his hand in acting). They got back together as a duo in 2015, and have been performing their classics wherever they can.

Having played a part in bringing the Caribbean influences to mainstream Hip Hop, Born Jamericans will always be remembered for “Yardcore”! Check out the selection below, and share with a friend. Show us some love/follow us on Twitter and Instagram at @13thStreetPromo.

.@ToryLanez Remixes @OriginalKoffee’s “Toast” On New Mixtape!

Gwaan wid it, gwaan wid it…

Some call him a “Remix God“, but Tory Lanez continues his run of remixes with the release of his latest mixtape, “International Fargo“! While folks are waiting for “Chixtape 5“, he holds over fans with this one. One track that stands out on this however is his remix of Jamaican Recording Artist on the rise, Koffee’sToast“! Produced by Walshy Fire and Izy Beats, Tory borrows the original and adds a few bars on it but left Koffee’s original parts on it. Tory also remixed the massively popular “Touchdown (Remix)” on his project which was originally done by UK Dancehall Artist Stylo G, Rapper Nicki Minaj, and Dancehall Icon Vybz Kartel, and dropped some lines on his remix to Dancehall/Afrobeats Artist Davido’sFall“.

With “Toast” cracking the 23 million mark on Youtube and showing up on Jordan Peele’s “US” movie, Koffee has a lot to give thanks for. We need a proper remix of “Toast” out here too featuring some of the established and upcoming names. “International Fargo” is out now, Koffee’s Rapture EP is out now, and you can check out the “Toast (Remix)” below. OLDIES SUNDAY: Deborahe Glasgow – Don’t Test Me (1989)

In recognition of March being “Women’s History Month“, Oldies Sunday will be highlighting a few women who have made their contribution to the Jamaican music landscape in the early years. Today’s selection comes from the late English born Lovers Rock/Reggae Artist Deborahe Glasgow who, despite a short music career, developed a following, and contributed to a few classic tunes. We check out her 1989 single, “Don’t Test Me“. Produced by Augustus “Gussie” Clarke, this single was featured on her 1989 self titled debut album. It was also released as a single and a duet version with Dancehall Artist Shabba Ranks in 1990. With lyrics about not being a pushover and being confident in one’s self, the single was a rather motivating one back in the day. It got bigger with the addition of Shabba’s contribution, and was sampled by the late Notorious B.I.G. on Hip Hop group Junior M.A.F.I.A.’s remix to their “Get Money” single in 1995.

Having started her career in her teens, she stepped out of the scene to devote more time to her family. Sadly she passed away in 1994, but is still remembered for her contributions to Lovers Rock, Reggae, and Dancehall.

We hope you enjoy our selection today. Be sure to check out the track and share with a friend. Show us some love/follow us on Twitter and Instagram at @13thStreetPromo.
