OLDIES SUNDAY: Toney Barrett – Trying Man (1978)

Today’s Oldies Sunday selection is for the Creators. Time and time again, many of us have spent a great portion of our lives creating, but never can seem to catch a break. Sometimes it’s like no matter how great our talent is, or how awesome our projects are, they all get overshadowed but something else, or someone. Today, the selection comes from Recording Artist/Producer Toney Barrett with his track, “Trying Man“.

The Roots Reggae track was released in 1978 through Isabel Records. With lyrics that can resonate with many even in today’s society, Toney asks what’s the meaning of his sufferation as he possesses wonderful talents, but can’t seem to get the needed opportunities, and be able to achieve the things that he wants. What’s special about the track is not only Toney Barrett singing on it, is the fact that he also wrote it, arranged it, and produced it. A track that became well known over time, it was one of a handful that Toney Barrett released. We dedicate today’s entry to all the Creators, keep pushing and making things happen, we’ll get our time soon!

Dre Island Wyclef Jean Justice Music Video Blog Reggae Hip Hop Dancehall 13thStreetPromo 13thStreetPromotions Caribbean Black Lives Matter BLM #BLM

.@DreIslandMusic & @Wyclef Fight For “Justice”!

With all that’s going on in the world, one thing is certain, the Black Man is still fighting the good fight. With more Black Lives Matter marches and protest spawning everyday, they won’t stop until justice is served, and those who were wronged inspire others to do the right thing and honour them. Recording Artists Wyclef Jean and Dre Island join the fight, and protests with good message music. Today, we see the visual for their track, “Justice“!

Directed by Ray Flaco, the video gives us a behind the scenes look at both artists recording “Justice” from their respective locations, and interacting with the people while spreading the message that justice for Black lives needs to happen. They also can be seen jogging while rocking hoodies and watching their backs, which sheds light on the injustice that the late Trayvon Martin faced. Inspired by Wyclef’s racial profiling experience, he is no stranger to calling out on injustice, racism, and wanting equal rights through his music. He recruited Dre Island for the track who is considered one of Jamaica’s most powerful messengers.

BLACK LIVES STILL MATTER!

“Justice” will be available on the deluxe version of Dre Island’s recently released debut album, “Now I Rise“, which will be released later this month. Check out the video below, and share with a friend. Show us some love/follow us on Twitter and Instagram at @13thStreetPromo.
