Barrington Levy Gets Sampled On @MeganRyte’s “On & On”!

If you’re familiar with Hot 97, you’re aware of one of their personalities, DJ Megan Ryte. Recently she announced that she has signed with Interscope Records, and in celebration of her achievement, she released her debut single, “On & On“! Produced by MyBoyRoach, this blends some Caribbean vibes thanks to Tory Lanez, Hood Celebrityy, and the legendary Barrington Levy who appears as a sample. The song, which aims to prep listeners for the Summer fun and love, sampled Levy’s 1994 single “Be Strong“. Produced by Levy and released through the Lipstic Label, “Be Strong” was featured on his 1993 project, “Barrington“, and given the acoustic treatment on his Album “Acousticalevy” which was released in 2015. The song finds Levy trying to do right with his lady, but is bombarded with a lot of trials throughout. The Artwork for “On & On” was also inspired by Levy’s 2008 Album, “Teach The Youth: Barrington Levy & Friends At Joe Gibbs (1980-85)“.

We Take A “Quick Throwback” Look Into @BlvkH3ro’s “Live This Life”

Before there was a “Blvk H3ro” and the locks, there was Hervin Bailey Jr., and today we go back in time with our new series, “Quick Throwback“! Looking back into H3ro’s first recorded release, “Live This Life“, this was produced by Leon-Pierre Answer for Mhadboxx Productions and released in 2014 (While it was written well before that). In the song he speaks on being fed up from not always having it, working hard for nothing, dreams, his experience with the 9 to 5 life, and shares encouragement throughout to those who are going through it. For those who are new to the Artist, you can hear him developing his signature sound here. The journey may be rough, but it takes a lot to get where you need to be. If you’re living under a rock (or you were pretty busy), the Carters (Beyonce and Jay Z) are in Jamaica! With their “On The Run 2” Tour dates drawing near, they’ve decided to hop on a Plane and pass through “Jamrock” to get some things done. Word is they’re shooting a video, and you know fans from all over are trying to get some camera time with Queen Bey and Jigga. While they’re no stranger to the Island, we’d like to highlight 5 times Jamaica has been a part of their careers. If no island vibes nuh inna it, it nah go nice! Check them out below!

1. One of Beyonce’s biggest singles, “Run The World (Girls)“, sampled Dancehall.

Beyonce’s 2011 single was the anthem for Women Empowerment worldwide, and off the album, “4“. Produced by The-Dream, Switch, and Shea Taylor, the single sampled “Pon De Floor“, a collaborative effort between Major Lazer and Dancehall Icon Vybz Kartel. Beyonce’s single went on to become one of her biggest ones to date, and gave the “World Boss” some writing credit too.

2. Jay Z has rapped over a few Dancehall/Reggae samples.

Jay Z’s from Brooklyn, New York, an area that is heavily populated by Caribbean folks. He must have some sort of Jamaican influence in his songs, right? He has thrown some patois in the lyrics, but singles like “On To The Next One” off his “Magna Carter…Holy Grail” album borrowed a piece of Cutty Rank’s infamous intro off his 1992 single, “A Who Seh Me Dun“. Other samples include Max Romeo’s “Chase The Devil“, which was featured on “Lucifer“, the late John Holt’s “I Will” on “Encore“, Sizzla’s “Solid As A Rock” on “Crown“, and Sister Nancy’s “Bam Bam” and Jacob Miller’s “Tenement Yard” on “Bam“. Big up the Producers involved.

Marcia Aitken’s “I’m Still In Love” Featured In @Beyonce x Jay Z’s “OTR II” Ad!

Jamaica’s music continues to leave an impression on many worldwide, and today’s no different. Hours ago, Power couple Beyonce and Jay Z announced their “On The Run 2” Tour. While fans all over get their things ready to see their Idols perform live, music heads heard a familiar classic playing throughout the 45 second ad. Straight out of 1977 comes Marcia Aitken’s cover of “I’m Still In Love (With You Boy)“! Produced by Joe Gibbs, it gave the young Aitkens (who was a student at the Excelsior High School at the time) her first #1 hit in Jamaica, with high chartings in the US and UK. The single was featured on her 1981 debut, “Reggae Impact“, and was a cover of the late Alton Ellis 1967 Sir Coxsone Dodd produced hit (his version focused on “girl” as hers the opposite gender). “I’m Still In Love” has been sampled by Sean Paul, Beres Hammond, Trinity, and Althea & Donna.
