Ahead Of The Privy Council’s Decision, Vybz Kartel Shares “Drag Dem Bat” Video

It’s officially one day before the world will know if Dancehall Artist Vybz Kartel will be a free man, or he will remain behind bars. The fate of his life is currently in the hands of UK’s Privy Council, who will make the decision on March 14. While Prison has not stopped his music from being released, fans are anticipating to see their “Dancehall Hero” walk the streets like them again. Before the decision, Kartel shared the visual for his single, “Drag Dem Bat“.

Directed by Mental Chung, a Cricket Bat becomes the tool of choice in the video for “Drag Dem Bat”. What started as a confrontation between two young men turned into a series of problems being solved with the swing of a bat at the next person. It solved robberies, bullying, and more. The bat couldn’t solve every problem though, and we get to see how it ends. “Drag Dem Bat” was produced by Music House Entertainment on the “News Room Riddim“, and Vybz Kartel makes shoutouts to those who have things on lock in various communities on the track, as it’s definitely not a play thing when the war starts. As we await the news, many are looking forward to the “World Boss” walking on freedom street.

OLDIES SUNDAY: Vibes Cartel – Drive By (1999)

It’s the first “Oldies Sunday” entry of 2024! We hope to put you on to many more classic tunes and underrated tunes from back in the day. Today, we celebrate the birthday of a Dancehall legend named Vybz Kartel. But before he became the Icon we know today, he was known as an upcoming Artist named Addi Banton, who along with Mr. Lee and Escobar, were a part of group in the mid-1990s called, Vibes Cartel. We highlight their track, “Drive By“.

Produced by Computer Paul on the “Scorpion Riddim“, this was released through Boot Camp Records in 1999. The track features melodies, some badman lyrics, and a different kind of energy as the group deejays about not taking disrespect from anyone, being superior to anyone out, and emphasizing that they will retaliate when threats come their way. “Drive By” quickly became a known track, and it received a lot of airplay in Jamaica (Editor’s note: I remember hearing about “Vibes Cartel” on FAME FM (big up Alrick & Boyd), and I believe this was the track that was making its rounds.). The group also made its name be known throughout Jamaica through a series of live performances, bringing lyrics and a striking presence that stood out every time.

Since the release of “Drive By”, the Vibes Cartel group disbanded soon after. Mr. Lee and Escobar went on to pursue other endeavours, while Addi Banton made his name writing for a few Dancehall Artists including Bounty Killa who took him under his wing, and becoming a solo Artist. Addi kept the Vibes Cartel name, made some modifications, and became the Dancehall Enigma known forever as, Vybz Kartel. Mr. Lee made a few attempts as a solo Artist, going under the name Tsunami 1876. Escobar made musical efforts during and after Vibes Cartel, and even recorded a number of tracks with Vybz throughout the 2000s. While many know of Vybz Kartel who celebrates his 48th birthday today, not many know of Vibes Cartel. Here’s a little bit of History.

2023 was another year in the books for Popcaan. He continues to hold his own as a Dancehall giant, a the 2nd Mayor of St. Thomas, and of course a Minister of Tourism as he has welcomed many of the big names on the Island. He recently concluded his annual UnrulyFest event in St. Thomas, but he had a few more tricks up his sleeve. Closing out 2023 the right way, he delivers a surprise project called, “Best Mood“.

Featuring 15 tracks, Popcaan ensures his fans ring in the new year with some unruly hits on “Best Mood”. The Deejay previously released a couple tracks off the project, and we can expect additional content in support of it come next year. Fivio Foreign, Vory, Vybz Kartel, Shane O, and Chronic Law make an appearance, while the likes of Anju Blaxx, Dre Skull, and Attomatic Records lend their sounds to the project. If you were one of many who missed out on UnrulyFest, hopefully this makes up for some of it. Ending 2023 the unruly way.

Tony Rebel once said, “You too chatty chatty, me caan live in peace.“, and it has been applied to those who just don’t know when to be silent. Nobody loves a snitch nor an informer, and sometimes it can get ugly for those type of people. Dancehall Artist Vybz Kartel is peeved by those who don’t know when to meddling in the affairs of others. He has something for those nosy people, and it’s the new single called, “Mind Your Own Business“.

Produced by Vybz Kartel Muzik, Kartel has a few words for those who love to snoop in other people’s business. For those who enjoy spreading news and being a tattletale, it won’t end well for them. Kartel melodically delivers in this one, and shares the phrase “Walk and live, talk and dead” as a warning. In a society where there are platforms who thrive off of other people’s business, “Mind Your Own Business” may just encourage some to keep things to themselves, or maybe not. Vybz Kartel comes through with some new for the people to enjoy. See people business and leave it alone.
