We Look Back At King Jammys’ “Sleng Teng Riddim” In Our Throwback Playlist Series

In 1985, a Jamaican Producer by the name of Lloyd James o/c King Jammys would change the landscape in Jamaican music forever. Armed with a Casio MT-40 and the MT-40 Rock Rhythm, he would create the “Sleng Teng Riddim“. Widely regarded as the first “Digital Riddim“, the Riddim would make its debut with Dancehall Artist Wayne Smith’s “Under Mi Sleng Teng“. Over 40 years later, the Riddim would gain attention with the release of Sean Paul’s “Stand On Business“, celebrating the Riddim’s historic achievement, and further solidifying King Jammys’ contributions to the culture. Did you know it was even sampled in a video game? Today, we show love to the Riddim in our “#13thStreetThrowback” Playlist series.

Featuring over 60 tracks, we take you time traveling to the various eras where the “Sleng Teng Riddim” dominated. We have the original version, the John John version, the “Godfather Riddim“, the samples, and more. From Wayne Smith’s classic, to many others by the likes of Tenor Saw, Super Cat, Johnny Osbourne, Sugar Minott, and more. There are many Riddims, and the “Sleng Teng Riddim” remains an uncontested classic.

Every neighbourhood has them, and new ones are formed everyday. For every successful person, there’s someone who shares tales of delusion and fabrication. Now they can be great storytellers, but when the truth comes out, they go into hiding. The fast life has a large share of those type of people, and Dancehall Artist Vibes Machine calls them out in, “Cappa Choppa“.

In a video directed by 12Span Visuals, Vibes Machine questions the credibility of the local hustler in, “Cappa Choppa”. Overhearing a conversation, Vibes gets into interrogation mode and confronts the Man’s source of earnings, if he is really hustling as he says he is, and getting to the truth to see if he is factual, or a fraudster. There are many in the world who will pose with the belonging of someone successful, and even use them as a way to leverage favours from others, or open the door to an opportunity. When they’re called out on their lies, it is embarrassing, especially on Social Media. Watch out for the cappas.

Having the right person is always a vibe. Even on the worst of days, that person knows how to keep you locked in. The way the world is going, we should be thankful for that person who feels like they were handpicked from the heavens for you. Recording Artist/Creative Whosrila has experienced the right person in his life, and he speaks about it in, “Made You“.

Produced by CIN (Farzad Noutash), Whosrila shows his appreciation for the special person in his life in, “Made You”. He believes Jah made her specially just for him, and she has all the qualities that has him falling for her over and over. Rila puts her on that special place in a video directed by Jxsse Jxmes, and he pours his heart out throughout the clip as he bonds with her in a manner of ways. Whosrila has been on the scene for a number of years having been a part of many Visual and creative productions. He tapped into music in recent times, and is steadily building his catalogue. OLDIES SUNDAY: Bogle – All Dem Deh (2004)

August 22 was celebrated as the 62nd birthday for the late Dancer/Recording Artist Gerald “Bogle” Levy. When Bogle stepped out with his crew, the dance gets nicer as unique moves would make their debut, and the world would catch on. When he started recording music, he made statements. Today on “Oldies Sunday“, we go back in time to check out, “All Dem Deh“.

Released by LA Lewis for Success Records in 2004 and later Hights Production, Bogle dismissed people who were never genuine in his journey in, “All Dem Deh”. The track was recognized as a diss to fellow Dancer John Hype, who was a former member of the “Black Roses Crew” collective. The track came shortly after Hype formed his own dance crew to rival Black Roses, and caused a rift on the scene. Production varied on “All Dem Deh”, but it was popular at the time. The song would appear over the Instrumental to Rapper Snoop Dogg’s “Drop It Like It’s Hot“, and Rapper Jadakiss’ “Why“. The song was premiered at a number of street events, and was answered by John Hype shortly. It would later be released on “A Tribute To Bogle” in 2005 through Success Records.

Since the release of “All Dem Deh”, Bogle would maintain a presence in Dancehall. Dancing since a child, he emerged in the late 80s Dancehall scene creating new dances. His skills would earn him a solid reputation, and his dances would be the basis for many hit singles and endorsements. Sadly, Bogle would be gunned down in early 2005 after an altercation. As Dancehall group Voicemail said it, “Mr. Wacky (one of Bogle’s aliases) is gone, but his dancing lives on…“, and tributes in various forms continue for him over 21 years later. Bogle is remembered for many of his catchphrases that would appear on songs, and “All Dem Deh” is still one many would reflect on.

Ghost Speaks On The Love That Has Him “Coming Again”

The legendary Singer Ghost continues to build on a catalogue with classic covers, and original music that found a few fans. He stepped into the Pop world with the release of “Be Your Friend” a couple years ago, but has been taking the stage ever since, and coaching his Daughter, Recording Artist Jo Lin. Recently, he shared his latest single, “Coming Again“.

Produced by Damian “Junior Gong” Marley and Paul Wright on the “No Better Riddim” and released through Ghetto Yutes International, Ghost sings about that special kind of love in, “Coming Again”. When the days are long and rough, nothing’s better than coming home to your favourite person. When those nights are cold, everything’s better when you’re wrapped up with your lover. Ghost continues to deliver love songs that are needed in these times, and we expect this one to win over fans at the next live event. Love nice enuh.

If you were a user of Social Media platform Vine back in the day, you may be familiar with Destin Conrad and his content. Since blowing up on the platform, he has gone on to be a Recording Artist with a string of successful singles, and award-worthy projects. Raised in Florida, he was born to a Jamaican Mother, and identifies as a Queer Artist. Speaking of Jamaica, he has shown love to the Island in a manner of ways over the years, but with the release of his new album “RoadRunner“, this may be the best way he has ever done it.

Featuring 13 tracks, Destin Conrad pays homage to the sounds of Jamaica and more with his 3rd studio album, “Road Runner”. Conrad taps into themes of love and relationships, and throws a party or few throughout. From Reggae and Dancehall prevail throughout, and we even hear a few familiar samples (including a classic from T.O.K.). Production on “Road Runner” includes the likes of Universvl, Kaytranada, Louie Lastic, Wavey, Dimmlak, Dan Forte, Don Mills, and Andre Harris, while Stalk Ashley, kwn, and Amanda Reifer show up on a couple tracks. Destin Conrad represents hard with his new album, and shows that when it comes to music, inspiration is everywhere, and one should never be limited.
