@TheScribz Presents: “The Struggles Of An Upcoming DJ” (A Rant)

Through my years of being a Disk Jockey (DJ), I have gone through a lot. From being criticized for my DJ skills, to embarrassing myself by not knowing how to properly handle the equipment, I’ve dealt with hypocrites i.e. those who support me but never want to see me better myself, Promoters who don’t want to pay me because I don’t have the big name yet and more. Nevertheless, this is a short synopsis of my struggle to make it to where I am now.

Words by DJ Scribz

I started out making simple Mixtapes (CDs) and playing on Online Radio Stations. This is how I’ve managed to get my name out there, and develop my craft. Through Online Radio, I was able to play on a number of Stations live, and with that I’ve gained fans. From there I’ve worked on building a fan base who’ve supported my Mixtapes no matter what I’ve released. Although this was helping me to get my name out, I was not making anything from it but with the help of a few fans who’ve held “Drink Ups”, I would get a few bookings. While these bookings were mainly utilizing my name to get a buzz for the “Drink Up”, they were deemed profitable in the end and I was never paid for my time, not even given a stipend to get me back home. From this point on I’ve started to realize how hypocritical and selfish people are as they moved on to having more successful events, and never reaching out to me to be a part of them. I’ve helped them in their start, now I’m a non factor to them once they’ve made it. Life goes on though, there are those who can properly pay me for my time and effort or help get my name out there, but would rather use “friendship” as a reason to not do so.

@ZJLiquid Unleashes New @IamTheKartel Album, “Black & White”!

Popular DJ and Producer ZJ Liquid has released the long awaited Album from Dancehall Artist, Vybz Kartel. Titled “Black & White“, features 13 hits that were produced by Liquid himself, and famed Producer Don Corleon. The tracks however date back as far as 2003, a time when Liquid’s H2O Records was established, and include “Hello Moto”, “Dem Bwoy”, “Mother In Law”, “Life Me Say”, “Fix Up”, and “Live Your Life”. The Album name is based on Kartel’s change in physical appearance over the years.

“When I decided to venture into Production, I had my objectives lined out and I was determined to make my mark in the Music Industry. Over the years, I had the opportunity to produce a few of Vybz Kartel’s hits which I have now compiled into an album,” said ZJ Liquid. The Album saw a March 10 release, and is currently distributed on all major Digital Media outlets by 21st Hapilos.

ZJ Liquid also shared that this album will give the general public a better understanding of who he is as a Producer as many fans tend to pay more attention to his DJ persona. “Many fans see me as a DJ first and Producer after. They know I am in Production but they are not aware of the altitude to which I take it. This Album will help them to recognize what Instrumentals were produced by me as well as which of their favorite Vybz Kartel tracks I’ve produced over the years,” shared ZJ Liquid. “Since its release, I have been receiving a monument of positive feedback. The fans have been supportive, and have been sharing the project on various Social Media platforms,” he added.

ZJ Liquid is optimistic that the Album will climb the charts both locally and Internationally.

@LinkyFirst3: The Jamaican Soca Artist To Watch!

Carnival season is in full swing here in Jamaica, and the Socaphiles will be wukking up and wining all day and night. One particular song will be given multiple spins, but what many will not know, is that it was done by one of their own…

Words by ShannyDeLioness

Yes you heard me right, we have a full fledged Jamaican Soca Artist! While we’ve had Dancehall/Soca/Calypso collaborations over the years by the likes of Beenie Man,  Konshens, Spice, and of course you all know of the late Legend Byron Lee and his Dragonaires, and the timeless Fab 5 Band, this Artist has taken his talents and determination and became the first to make it to the International Soca Monarch finals! His name is…Linky First!

Born Jason Henriques, Linky First has been blowing up the airwaves in Trinidad & Tobago and the rest of the Caribbean with his hit single, “Rock & Come In” on the Ruffin produced “Liming Riddim” since its release last year. He has since followed up with “Control It”, “X6”, “Doctor”, and “Naked Pon The Road”.

REVIEW: @Protoje’s “For The Culture” Event + Highlights

The Hope Gardens Shell Bandstand served as the perfect backdrop to showcase some of Reggae’s young royals to an eager audience of Locals and Tourists all with one thing in common…a love for the Culture. I personally gave up on Music in Jamaica until I came across these new school of Reggae Royals who through their socially conscious offerings, give honour to the many men and women who preceded them in the genre…

The gates opened at 7:30 Pm and the DJ for the night Yaadcore kept the early patrons entertained on the turntables, and DJ Jimmy Q of NewsTalk 93 FM handled hosting duties. By 9 Pm, the venue was almost full and the show kicked off with the opening act Sevana. Featuring cuts off her Sevana EP and even debuting a new song and a remix to Protoje’s “Love Gone Cold” (she was featured on the original), she had the audience mesmerized as she belted out tune after tune. I still refused to believe she did all that on a sore throat (Editor’s Note: She’s my Hero!!). By the time ZJ Sparks gave Protoje & The Indiggnation the greatest introduction ever, the venue was packed with patrons who were eager to sing and dance along with them.
