It’s that time again (for those who watch it), for the NFL Super Bowl! In it’s 52nd presentation, fans witness the duel between the New England Patriots, and the Philadelphia Eagles. There are also those who tune in for the moneymaker, the Commercials! One Commercial that popped up was an awkward one by Beverage giant Coca Cola as they presented their latest flavours in their Diet Coke line. Featuring the Mango flavour, ears perked up as a familiar voice was heard in the ad’s music, Dancehall legend Shabba Ranks! The Deejay appears as a sample from Scottish DJ/Producer Sam Gellaitry’s 2015 single, “Long Distance“. The track is featured on the DJ’s debut project, “Escapism” and samples Shabba Ranks’ vocals from his 1988 single “Telephone Love Deh Pon Mi Mind“, a remix to Singer JC Lodge’s hugely popular “Telephone Love“. While the Commercial was not the greatest way to promote a drink, we enjoyed the music. Check out the Commercial below!

OLDIES SUNDAY: Karen Smith – Wide Awake In A Dream (1986)
This Oldies Sunday selection is for the lovers, and it comes from the “Songbird from Jamaica“, Karen Smith! Today we go back to the year 1986 with “Wide Awake In A Dream“. Produced by Clifton “Jackie” Jackson, this was a cover of a single that has been sung by the likes of Barry Biggs, The Blues Busters, Jerry Jackson, Lyn Collins, Vickie Anderson, and Ken Boothe. Once she stepped into recording mode, Smith added her own flair to the track as she expresses how she feels about the love of her life. A video was also shot for this single, and it was directed by Alfonso Walker (I remember seeing this video a lot growing up on local TV).
Black Superheroes: We Look Back At Burning Spear’s “Great Men”
It’s February 1st, which means we’ve made it to another Black History Month. It is also the start of Reggae Month in Jamaica, and various parts of the world. While we look back at those who fought for the freedom of Black People, and celebrate those who continue the fight, we also look back at those who changed the game with their sound. Today we go back to 1990 with Reggae Icon Burning Spear and his tribute to the Black Superheroes, “Great Men (a.k.a. “Recall Some Great Men)“. Produced by Burning Spear and Nelson Miller, this was released through Mango Records, and featured on Spear’s 1990 Grammy nominated Album “Mek We Dweet“. In the song, Burning Spear roll calls some of the heroes who have contributed to the freedom of Black People worldwide. He starts off with the chorus, “Let’s recall some great men, who been fighting for our rights…“, and mentions the likes of Paul Bogle, Nelson Mandela, Marcus Garvey, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King Jr.
As we celebrate the month and those before us, let us also recognize those who are making strides and steadily making an impact in the world. Thanks for checking out the Blog, be sure to share with a friend, and follow us on Instagram! Hear the song below.

.@DiRealShaggy & @OfficialSting Perform “Don’t Make Me Wait” At 60th Grammys!
The 60th Grammy Awards event was a memorable one for many. While some went home with awards, there were others who got “robbed“, and others performed and made an impact. It was all fun when Host James Corden teamed up with International Recording Artists Shaggy and Sting for a special version of “Carpool Karaoke“. With the location of the Grammys being in New York, they took it to the Subway to perform a 3 man version of Shaggy and Sting’s new single, “Don’t Make Me Wait“. The performance was met with boos however as passengers weren’t enjoying Corden’s contribution. Being persistent, Corden continued to perform with them only to end up with a bloody nose.
The 2nd half of Shaggy & Sting’s appearance found them being introduced at the Grammys by Corden for a real performance of their new single. It first kicked off with Sting performing his classic “Englishman In New York” which followed by Shaggy appearing onstage later. With many mistaking Shaggy for Rapper Jim Jones because of his appearance, the performance was an awesome one, and definitely had people looking forward to their “44/876” project which has a April 20 release date.
