“The Apollo Series” Expands Reach & Honours Hip Hop Icon With @TheJMCEffect Partnership!

The Apollo Series, the open stage and artist showcase which has made its mark on Kingston’s live music scene over the past two years, has now partnered with the Jamaica Music Conference (JMC), which seeks to connect music professionals. The JMC team will be present at The Apollo Series on February 8 at The Haven to interact with artistes while the conference, which takes place February 13 – 16, will feature The Apollo Showcase on its opening night at Dub Garden, 10A West King’s House Road, Kingston 10.

The Apollo Showcase will serve as a welcome of sorts for JMC’s special guest of honour, DJ Kool Herc, the Jamaica-born man credited as Hip Hop’s forefather. In appropriate fashion, The Apollo Series has curated a 30-minute showcase that will highlight some of the best local Hip Hop talent to have graced its stage. Five Steez, The Sickest Drama and Inztinkz of the Kingston and New York-based collective The Council is slated to appear, with a feature from Dizzy the Ill One.

“We see the JMC as an essential forum, filling the gap of formal knowledge sharing in the country’s music landscape,” says organiser of The Apollo Series and head of A.C.T.I.O.N. Jamaica, Simon the Writer. “We feel there is a perfect synergy between our two events and this is further strengthened by the proximity in our dates and our mutual affiliation with Reggae Month.”
Simon the Writer said when presented with the opportunity to curate a showcase, The Apollo Series team could not pass up on the opportunity. “We feature all kinds of talent on our platform and that includes local Hip Hop artistes, so it was a no-brainer for us to present a set suitable for a guest of honour such as DJ Kool Herc.”

JMC Chief Executive Officer Kwasi Bonsu says, “We’re elated to have The Apollo Showcase as a part of our conference. They have been doing a lot of groundwork in exposing artistes and I know they will have a strong and unique presentation for our audience.”

The Apollo Showcase is scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. after the official welcome event on Thursday, February 13. The conference, which will continue through to Saturday at the Courtleigh Hotel, will feature other showcases, panels and events geared towards sharing best practices in the music industry. The JMC closes on Sunday, February 16, with the Itopia Life Beach Day at Wickie Wackie Beach.

.@JKinggz_ & @Laughta1 Don’t Need “No Fake Love” In New Video!

2019 saw Recording Artist JKinggz being very busy, and 2020 won’t see any change to that. With singles and projects out, he continues with the video for the new single, “No Fake Love“! Directed by the team of E.A.D., Polar Films, and RDCYF, both single and video features an appearance by prominent UK Recording Artist Laughta who fires off with her blend of Hip Hop and UK Grime throughout. The Ace Bankz produced track finds them making it clear that they have no time for fake people and the love they claim to have, being all about positive energy, and moving forward to achieving greatness and all that comes with that.

The St. Vincent and The Grenadines born/Brooklyn based JKinggz has a lot more in store for the year as he is currently working on more singles, and projects including the follow up to his “No Co-Sign” EP. He is also hitting the road to promote “No Fake Love” and more in the coming days. We encourage everyone to stay far from the fakers, as their negative energy and “love” will be your downfall.

Hopeton Lewis & U Roy - Tom Drunk 13thStreetPromotions.com

OLDIES SUNDAY: Hopeton Lewis & U-Roy – Tom Drunk (1971)

Today’s Oldies Sunday selection comes from the duo of Jamaican Icons Hopeton Lewis and U-Roy. We get to hear the classic, “Tom Drunk“! Produced by Duke Reid and featuring Tommy McCook & The Supersonics, this was released in 1971 through the Treasure Isle Label. The track features the duo calling out a lying and cheating person who thinks their ways will always be beneficial to them. They also warn that there are consequences for those actions, and they throw in a few proverbs throughout like “Tom drunk, but Tom nuh fool“, and “Play fool to catch wise“. The song turned out to be a hit for the Artists, and its wicked production becomes infectious after every listen. The song was featured on U Roy’s 1978 album, “Jah Son Of Africa“.

Over the years, “Tom Drunk” has been covered by The Specials, its Instrumental has been featured on fellow legendary Artist Stranger Cole’sCrying Every Night” track, and it has been sampled by Hip Hop Artists Talib Kweli, Hi-Tek, Mos Def, and Mr. Man on the classic, “Fortified Live“. U-Roy is still active in the music as he continues to perform his classics worldwide, while Hopeton Lewis made more hits until his passing in September 2014.

THANK YOU Hopeton Lewis & U-Roy for this classic!

OLDIES SUNDAY: @SteelPulse – Steppin’ Out (1984)

It’s Grammy season! With Reggae Artists like Koffee, Julian Marley, Sly & Robbie, Steel Pulse, and Third World in the running to cop one this year, we felt the need to highlight one of the unique moments in the Reggae category on Oldies Sunday. The aforementioned Steel Pulse Band is up with their 1984 classic, “Steppin’ Out“! Produced by Steel Pulse, Jimmy “Senyah” Haynes, and Del Newman, the track was featured on their 5th studio album, “Earth Crisis“. “Steppin’ Out” is also one of the first Reggae singles to be nominated for a Grammy award. The other single to be nominated was Jimmy Cliff’sReggae Night“. The Grammy eventually went to Black Uhuru in 1985 for their “Anthem” album.

With its energetic production, the single became a favourite for many listeners. Since its release, it has been sampled by the likes of Hip Hop Artists Rakim, Bun B, Blac Monks, Society, and EDM Artist Miguel Migs. It has also been covered by Alborosie, and remixed by Producer Steve Thompson, and the late legendary DJ Screw (you can hear the screwed & chopped version below).

Who’s your pick for the Reggae Grammy come January 26? Check out the classic below, and share with a friend. Show us some love/follow us on Twitter and Instagram at @13thStreetPromo.
