After a long hiatus, Oldies Sunday is back!

Today’s Oldies Sunday entry comes from the Reggae Band, Third World. Titled “1865 (96 Degrees In The Shade)“, this was a single of their 2nd album of the same name which was released in 1977 on Island Records. In the song they sing about the Morant Bay Riots of 1865 which resulted in the death of 400 blacks during the riot and 350 more through hangings which included National Heroes Paul Bogle and George William Gordon. The line “96 Degrees In The Shade” suggests the temperature on that day, real hot!

OLDIES SUNDAY: Chaka Demus And Pliers – Murder She Wrote (1992)


In recognition of French Montana and Nicki Minaj’s hit, “Freaks“, today I feature one of the songs that was sampled in it. Titled “Murder She Wrote“, this was a very popular hit of legendary duo Chaka Demus and Pliers. Released in 1992 and produced by Sly and Robbie on the “Bam Bam” remake riddim, this song was described as a song for the ladies with an “Angel face but a Devil’s heart“. This song spoke about a girl named Maxine who was a user, very promiscuous, and was also a murderer. According to the artists, this was written off an experience but with a few details omitted.
