OLDIES SUNDAY: @TootsMaytals – Do The Reggay (1968)

Today’s Oldies Sunday is dedicated to the late Frederick “Toots” Hibbert. A man who knew a thing or few about longevity, Toots Hibbert is the originator of the genre we know as “Reggae“. A man who inspired generations, created hits, and looked good doing it all, the world was definitely rocked when he made his transition on September 11. As founder and member of The Maytals, today we highlight the selection, “Do The Reggay“.

Produced by Leslie Kong and released through the Beverley’s Records in 1968, “Do The Reggay” was made to accompany a popular dance of the same name. While the song didn’t feature complex lyrics, it provided fun sounds that prompted listeners to get into a groove. Through the release of the single, Toots Hibbert is named as a pioneer of Reggae music as “Do The Reggay” marked a shift from the Ska and Rocksteady eras of music into a new genre of more upbeat sounds, and generations of new artists.

Today, regardless of anything, we just want you to enjoy the music, and remember one of the greatest artists to ever emerge from Jamaica. Rest in Peace Toots Hibbert, and thank you for the classics! That sweet Reggae music continues to seep through some of your favourite shows, and it won’t stop anytime soon. Recently, the 3rd season of the FOX TV show “9-1-1” premiered, and fans of the show were overjoyed. With stars like Angela Bassett and Jennifer Love Hewitt, the series follows the lives of Los Angeles first responders: Police Officers, Paramedics, Firefighters, and Dispatchers. On the premiere episode, viewers got a double dose of Reggae as Jamaican Band Toots & The Maytals and UK Band The English Beat’s music were featured.

Toots and The Maytals were the first to bat as their classic track, “54-46 Was My Number” was featured in a scene, then The English Beat’s “Doors Of Your Heart” followed soon after in another. “54-46” was released in 1968 and 1969, and produced by Leslie Kong. It has been sampled by Rapper Foxy Brown, Major Lazer, and Christiana Aguilera. “Doors Of Your Heart” was released in 1981, and was featured on the Band’s Sophomore album, “Wha’ppen?“.

When you’ve had a long day on the road or at work, there’s nothing better than coming home to relax. We have many ways to relax, we fall asleep immediately on the couch or bed, we take a bath or shower, or we get some wine or beer. In Beer giant Coors’ latest Commercial for their Light Beer, one woman not only cracks a can of Beer to relax, but she takes off her Bra! While many women can relate to letting the Tatas be free, we recognized the Commercial’s soundtrack, “Pressure Drop” by the legendary Toots & The Maytals! Released in 1969, this was produced by Leslie Kong and featured on the Band’s “Monkey Man” (1970) and “From The Roots” (1973) albums. The song helped Toots & The Maytals gain International recognition as it was featured in the classic Film, “The Harder They Come” (which was recently released on Blu-ray).

A song about revenge, but in the form of Karma, “Pressure Drop” became one of Toots & The Maytals’ most memorable singles, and was included in Rolling Stone’s500 Greatest Songs Of All Time” list at #453. It was also featured in the soundtrack for “Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas“. Relax and check out the Commercial below, and share with a friend. .@DJBlizzardMusic Is Here For A “Good Time” With Savone Assisted Single

It’s still party time over here, so get in this club! To join in on the summer fun, DJ/Producer/Producer Blizzi took time out from cooking up his upcoming project to release, “Good Time“! Produced by DJ Blizzard Music and featuring Singer Savone, Blizzi drops a song that has that chilling on the beach/laying up in a hammock/seeing the view from the 50th floor of the Penthouse vibe. Blizzi’s laid back flow, Savone’s syrupy vocals and a sample from Toots Hibbert & The Maytal’s54-46 Was My Number” are key to keeping this one on repeat. For those unfamiliar, Blizzi is the Grandson of the legendary Toots Hibbert who has been doing his thing for quite some time. If you’re not picturing yourself hitting the road and escaping all the stress, you need to listen to this a few more times.
