It’s been a while, but we’re back with a new Playlist. More importantly, a #13thStreetThrowback Playlist! On May 21, Jamaica lost one of its greatest Producers, Robert Dixon a.k.a. “Bobby Digital”. A man who conquered a unique style of production and is a founding father of the global Dancehall movement, Bobby Digital and his Digital B label blessed the likes of Shabba Ranks, Morgan Heritage, Buju Banton, Admiral Tibet, Sizzla, Bounty Killa, Beenie Man, Garnett Silk, and many others with the sounds that scored chart topping success, Grammy wins, and various certifications. Today, we pay homage to this great man with a new Throwback Playlist. From the 80s to the 90s and beyond, we give you some of the classics, and a few songs that sampled those classics. If you have a favourite on there, let us know! Walk good, Bobby Digital!
Today’s Valentine’s Day! While many couples will be color coordinating and sharing gifts and quality time, there will be a lot of loners today. While reasons vary for the loners, it’s gonna be a long day. With that said, we’ve released “The Lonely Valentine Playlist“!
Featuring 14 classic sad songs from Alton Ellis to Vybz Kartel, we’re going with the theme as we’ve previously catered to the couples (even the Dancehall ones), and even the sidechicks (click the linked text for the Playlists.). Hang in there loners, things might turn around in a crazy way today, or soon. To those who miss their love, we hope they give things another chance. It’s still all about love. Shout out the couples on VDay.
If you have heard “J.O.P.!“, “Bushkash Bushkash“, “So Sick…“, “1 Voice…“, “Bad people, move move move…” and “Start di Helicopter…” at some point your Dancehall music listening sessions, then you have experienced some of Dancehall Artist Aidonia’s great works! The man born Sheldon Aitana Lawrence, has been a mainstay since his ascent onto the scene in the early 2000s. If you were looking for lyricism, a voice that commanded attention, and something new, Aidonia was one of the few who checked all three over the years and had hits to boot.
Today’s post pays tribute to the man who had folks saying “J.O.P.” over the wildly popular “Gaza” and “Gully” with the easily recognized hand sign. With our latest Playlist, we let you in on the works from “The 4th Genna Boss“! With over 6 hours of hits from bad man tunes to gal songs, the only ones didn’t make it aren’t available for streaming. With folks out here trying to discredit Aidonia’s contribution to Dancehall, you need people like to appreciate and recognize his works that weren’t in vain.
Recently, Dancehall Artist Konshens dropped a new single titled, “Bad Man“. Off his latest “BadMan vs Nice Guy” project, he recruited the classic “Bookshelf Riddim” for the track and gave listeners a dose of the Konz’ sound. Released in 1998, this was produced by legendary Producer Tony “CD” Kelly and released through his K-Licious label. The Riddim featured the hits, “Bookshelf” by Beenie Man, “Deport Them” by Sean Paul, and was sampled by the likes of Ape Drums, Khalia, and Sneakbo.
We’re highlighting the “Bookshelf Riddim” in the latest Playlist in our #13thStreetThrowback series! It’s time to learn a thing or few. Check it out below, and share with a friend. Show us some love/follow us on Twitter and Instagram at @13thStreetPromo.
Recently, International Recording Artist Jason Derulo released his latest single, “Too Hot“. While Jason has a great run with the pop hits, a familiar sound can be heard throughout the track, and it was the 1993 Dancehall classic, “Murder She Wrote” by Chaka Demus & Pliers! Produced by Sly & Robbie for the Taxi Label, this song is Chaka Demus & Pliers’ signature track, and sampled another classic, the 1966 Toots & The Maytals’ “Bam Bam” which was produced by the late Byron Lee! Today, we’re gonna highlight the classic samples, songs that sampled them, and the many variations of the “Bam Bam Riddim” in our new “#13thStreetThrowback” Playlist series! It’s time to learn something, and party away!
