The 2019 Carnival season is officially on its way, and Dancehall artists are teaming up with Soca’s finest stars for various collaborations. It’s definitely a good look for the genres as it gives them more leverage to different markets, even after the seasons is done. Carnival is an International brand with different cities and countries around the world hosting their own. With more interest in the Caribbean culture over the years, it’s a pivotal moment for Dancehall and Soca to make a greater push for the International market with these collaborations. For those unfamiliar, the Jamaican love affair with Soca and Carnival dates back to the 1940s at the University of the West Indies (Mona Campus), and the collaborations over time are just great moments in this ever growing union. With their feel good vibes and ability to bring people together, the collaborations will continue. Today we’re featuring a few of the Dancehall x Soca crossovers that are currently making waves on the scene.

Today we feature Orti, a French Recording Artist, with the music video for his single “Breaking Bad“. Bringing some Dancehall “bad man” vibes and a lil influence from the hit TV Series (“Breaking Bad“), Orti can be seen making boss moves throughout the video as he oversees his operations. We love the bilingual delivery on this as well, and the production will definitely have you keeping it on repeat. Spreading the love through music today are Dancehall Artist Shenseea (who has been on a roll with these Soca collabs) and Soca Artist Kes on “Close To Me“! This one is definitely a banger as Tano and Brooklyn Decent provided a lovely production here to accompany the Artists get close throughout the song. With Loggo Lionel handling directorial duties for the video, we see all the chemistry oozing onscreen. Big up Jimmy October, Christian Kalpee, Daryl Gervais, Nicolai Ramjass (Brooklyn Decent), and Michael Montano (Tano) who contributed to this song! While 2018 found Tifa announcing her retirement from music, 2019 will see a delay in that as she continues to drop new music. One of her first offerings for the year is “Come Off A Me Name“! Produced by Vexxx Bad Records and FeddaWeight Productions, Tifa has a problem with those who keep her name in certain gossip and arguments. In her own style however, she kindly tells them to cease all name dropping a.k.a. “Come Offa Mi Name!“. She follows up the single with a video directed by FeddaWeight Films that finds her in colourful backgrounds and various costume changes. Be on the lookout for more T-I-F-A this year! OLDIES SUNDAY: Abijah – Revelation (2001)

Happy Sunday folks! Today we’re keeping the same 2000’s energy on “Oldies Sunday“! Today’s selection comes from Reggae Artist, Abijah with the single, “Revelation“! Produced by Mikey Bennett and released through Matluk Music in 2001, the song finds Abijah showcasing spiritual and prophetic lyrics as he spoke about pending wars and injustice that ravishes the world, and calling on the Lord. A near miss of death and a dream were the inspiration for this song as Abijah was within inches of a stray bullet during a shootout while living in Vineyard Town, St. Andrew.

After the release of “Revelation”, the song quickly became a hit and placed Abijah as an Artist to watch. The song spent 30 weeks on the Jamaican Music Charts, and found him performing in various locations around the world. “Revelation” was also featured on his 2003 “Abijah” album, and various Reggae Compilations shortly after. In the time that followed since the single’s release, Abijah went on to release more music, and perform with the likes of Tevin Campbell, King Yellowman, Nadine Sutherland, and Beenie Man with whom he remixed “Revelation” with. “Relevation” went on to be Abijah’s most recognizable track that he still performs to this day.
