The Tamlins Baltimore Randy Newman Nina Simone Reggae Music Blog 13thStreetPromotions 13thStreetPromo Oldies Sunday Old School 1979 1980 Sly & Robbie Taxi Records Cover Song Caribbean Retro Oldies

OLDIES SUNDAY: The Tamlins – Baltimore (1979/1980)

Today’s Oldies Sunday selection was inspired by the latest offerings by Recording Artist, Lila Ike. Our selection comes from Reggae Group The Tamlins with the track, “Baltimore“. Produced by Sly & Robbie for Taxi Records, this was released in 1979 and 1980, and is a cover of American Recording Artist Randy Newman’s 1977 track of the same name. It was heavily inspired by American Recording Artist/Civil Rights Activist Nina Simone’s 1978 cover, especially in the production department. With the song’s social commentary, it paints a picture of living in Baltimore, Maryland in the 70s with people living on hard times, and if given the chance to escape, returning is never an option.

Since The Tamlins’ version of “Baltimore” was released, it became one of their biggest songs, thanks to its excellent Reggae production and harmonies displayed throughout. The Sly & Robbie production went on to become a juggling Riddim that has been reworked by Star Trail and Main Street labels, and featured recordings from Courtney John, Lutan Fyah, Dennis Brown, and many more. As mentioned earlier, the selection was inspired by Lila Ike, as she released her debut EP titled, “The ExPerience” on Friday, May 15. The EP’s final track, “Thy Will“, which was produced by Protoje, samples The Tamlins’ version. The group, consisting of Winston Morgan, Junior Moore, and Carlton “Tamlin” Smith, went on to release more music, and collaborated with various Artists including the late Peter Tosh. Though still active, original member Winston Morgan left in 1983, and was replaced by Derrick Lara who passed away in February 2020.

WE URGE YOU TO STAY SAFE, QUARANTINE WISELY, AND STAY SANITIZED ALWAYS.

.@WavyWavyJones Enlists @BlvkH3ro, @KioneZaire, & @JeebyLyricist For “Ketch Di Pree”!

Jamaican Producer Wavy Jones stays low key when he gets to work. When he puts the finished products out into the world however, it’s like a parade. Having worked with the likes of Yanah, Biz, Blvk H3ro, JayEdge, and more, he looks to make a lot more noise this year. Today, we get to hear, “Ketch Di Pree“!

Done in collaboration with International label In Good Company, Wavy Jones calls up Blvk H3ro, Jeeby Lyricist, and Kione Zaire for an exhibition of Reggae, Soul, and Hip Hop sounds, and dope lyrics all around. With the quartet forming like the “Goodfellas“, or the “Reservoir Dogs“, or “The Rat Pack“, they join the list of folks who further push the boundaries in Jamaica’s music scene. This marks the 2nd time these 4 creatives linked up as they’ve previously released, “Blessed Indies“.

Accompanying the single, is a music video directed by IIFold Creative Studios (with a lil help from Director 300K) in Downtown Kingston. In the video, we find the quartet tag teaming to give you that fire. Whether in street clothes, or all suited up, the gang’s all here, and we get a great visual with a dope soundtrack. “Ketch Di Pree” is available right now!

Hype unno want, hype unno a go get! Having given us the single and a stunning visualizer last year, Royal Blu returns with the official music video for his single, “Hype“! Directed/Animated by Ikem Smith, Royal Blu steps out in some bad Clarks to dominate this video game world as various villains attempt to annihilate him. They fail however, and throughout the video, it shows more and more that Royal Blu may just be too big/powerful for the scene he’s in, and needs to dominate in other lands. We also see him sharing with a Therapist his challenges, and in conclusion accepts what is laid out for him. In the end, he just has be himself, no matter what people think or say. Ikem Smith shows out in this visual, making way for more creative visuals in the Caribbean entertainment scene. It’s about time you give him a call.

Will Royal Blu drop a project this year? While we won’t give you any inside information, just know that much more music is on the way. Check out our Royal Blu Playlist featuring some of his features over the years. Check out the video below, and share with a friend.
