OLDIES SUNDAY: Foxy Brown – Oh Yeah (2001)

Closing off the Month of June with another “Oldies Sunday“ selection in recognition of “Caribbean American Heritage Month“. For today’s post, we go back to the 2000s to check Rapper Foxy Brown’s “Oh Yeah“.

Produced by Eddie Scoresazy and featuring Dancehall/Reggae Artist Spragga Benz, “Oh Yeah” was Foxy Brown’s assertion that she’s a Queen in Hip Hop, speaking her mind on a few observations, and display her dominance in the scene. Released through Def Jam Records in 2001, the track sampled “54-46 That’s My Number” by Toots and The Maytals, and interpolated “Punky Reggae Party” by Bob Marley and The Wailers. “Oh Yeah” was also a part of the launch of Brown and Benz’s relationship at the time, and it was further evidenced in the music video that was directed by Director X (then known as Little X). “Oh Yeah” was the first single of Brown’s 2001 album “Broken Silence“, but it was not successful when it was released. The track charted very low on Billboard, and was receiving little airplay on Radio. Despite this, it built its buzz in the streets through Mixtapes including a version with alternate lyrics on a DJ Envy-hosted “Best Of Foxy Brown” Mixtape, and live performances.

Since the release of “Oh Yeah”, Foxy Brown’s career had a number of setbacks. While she found success shortly after the release, she would find herself battling court cases, being dropped by Def Jam, slow to release music, and dealt with hearing loss. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Brown is of Dougla (Afro-Trini and Indo-Trini mix) and Chinese-Trinidadian descent. She shows her love for Trinidad and Tobago in a number of songs and media moments, along with namedropping Jamaica, but that has to do with her growing up in the melting pot of cultures in Brooklyn. She is a multi-platinum selling Hip Hop Artists, and one of the “Queens of New York Hip Hop“. She is recognized during Caribbean-American Heritage Month, and “Oh Yeah” went on to become of her signature tracks.

What’s a party without some music from Konshens? His run in the 2010s was one that is etched in stone, and he’s still making it happen. His hits touched the local and International markets, and best believe the ladies made the most of the running times, displaying their various dance moves. He’s gearing up for a Summer like no other with the release of the new album, “Pool Party“.

Featuring 15 tracks, Konshens has the music for the function with the new album, “Pool Party”. The album follows up his 2021 release, “Red Reign“. This is for the ladies who know how to wine, the ladies who know how to have a fun time, and for the ladies who love Konshens. Production on the new album is handled by Submachine Entertainment, and Konz brought along friends like Lil Duval, The Game, Moyann, Eric Bellinger, Skillibeng, Charly Black, D’Yani, IzyBeats, and Trackstarr to be a part of the festivities.The Summer is looking to be a great one in music, and “Pool Party” will be a part of the soundtrack.

He secured a spot in the columns of Dancehall, and aims for more. Earlier, he premiered the video for the single, “Lifestyle Moment“.

Reuniting with Producer Notnice, Popcaan reflects on the days where he didn’t have much, and is giving thanks for the many blessings he has received in, “Lifestyle Moment”. Directed by Linkz Notnice, we get a highlight reel of the Deejay living it up with friends, sharing good times, spreading joy throughout. No longer will he see the days where he only had one pair of Sneakers, no more hungry days. The Deejay has done well for himself and others, and is setting examples for others to follow. It’s a success moment!

Royal Blu may seem like a simple Man with his calm demeanor, but underneath is an Artist who possesses powerful lyrics, and knows how to light that fire when he enters the booth. Formerly known as Blu Kid, the Spanish Town native has been perfecting his craft, and has built a movement that continues to witness his rise. He has performed with some of the best, and now he makes a big step in his career. He releases his debut album, “Spain Root“.

Featuring 14 tracks and released through Easy Star Records, “Spain Root” is Royal Blu’s dedication to his hometown. The project is some of Blu’s best work yet, and he covers a lot of ground here. Showcasing a display of great songwriting, a solid command of whatever production is thrown his way, and holding his own when collaborating with others. Production of “Spain Root” is handled by DelaGroove, J.L.L., RiddimBoss, ProdByRoss, The Autos, G.Wav, Paris Lamont, Mundo, Yo Christon, KaleX, and Cuco Fyah, while he shares the booth with Protoje, Runkus, D’Yani, Akina Eman, and Kabaka Pyramid.
