OLDIES SUNDAY: @PeterTosh – Glass House (1983)

Today’s Oldies Sunday selection comes from the late great Winston Hubert McIntosh otherwise known as Peter Tosh. Peter Tosh was a former member of the Bob Marley lead band The Wailers who left later down to pursue a solo career and was successful. “Glass House” was one of Peter Tosh’s many hits. “Glass House” was released in 1983 and produced by Peter Tosh for his Intel-Diplo HIM (Intelligent Diplomat for His Imperial Majesty) label. His song was also featured on his 6th studio album, “Mama Africa” which was released the same year. He sings about people who aim to belittle others while they themselves aren’t doing well with their own lives. In the song he chants the very popular proverb, “If you live in a glass house, don’t throw stones“.

OLDIES SUNDAY: @AdmiralBaileyDJ x Chaka Demus – One Scotch (1986)

Today’s Oldies Selection comes from Deejays Admiral Bailey and Chaka Demus. Titled “One Scotch” and produced in 1986 by Prince Jammy’s (Now King Jammy’s), the deejays meet up at a bar and order their regular drink choices of one Scotch, one Bergerman (Bourbon), and one Beer all while dropping lyrics about having bullas with avacado, having money to take a plane trip and even a little chant (Demus). This song was inspired by Amos Milburn’s 1950 hit “One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer” and became a big hit in Jamaica.

Today’s Oldies Sunday selection comes from legendary Deejay Professor Nuts with his 1991 hit “Inna De Bus“. Produced by G & G Nugent, Nuts deejays about his experiences in a Jamaican bus ride. He speaks about people being short on the bus fare and then thrown out, body odor offending people, speaking about the types of buses and bus fare prices. Very entertaining song and should have you laughing from Professor Nuts’ comical lyrics.

OLDIES SUNDAY: King Yellow Man – Zungguzeng (1982)

Today’s Oldies Sunday selection comes from one of Dancehall’s foundation artists and the most popular albino artist, King Yellow Man. Titled “Zungguzungguguzungguzeng” (Yes LONG name), it was produced by “Junjo” Lawes on the “Diseases” Riddim a.k.a. “Mad Mad Riddim”. Yellow Man showcases his rhyming abilities all while stating he shouldn’t be taken for a child. The rhyming style is reminiscent of the toasting rappers used to do at parties in the 1980s.

OLDIES SUNDAY: @BigShipFreddie (Freddie McGregor) – I Was Born A Winner (1992)

Now this was a record! Captain of the Big Ship Freddie McGregor makes his way on my Oldies Sunday selection today. Titled, “I Was Born A Winner” and produced in 1992 by himself and Danny Browne, this was a cover of Derrick Harriott’s 1967 hit “The Loser“. Freddie sings about missing his lady love and deflecting being called a loser, pretty great song to jam to.

This is Junior Byles - Fade Away (1976)

OLDIES SUNDAY: Junior Byles – Fade Away (1976)

Today’s Oldies Sunday selection comes from Reggae artist Junior Byles. Titled “Fade Away” which was released in 1976 under Eagle Records, was produced by Joseph Hoo Kim and was featured on the soundtrack for the hit Jamaican film “Rockers“. “Fade Away” speaks on the way people value material wealth over their own souls, corruption, the ills of society, and preaching that they will all fade away soon. “Fade Away” was hailed as Byles’ best work and became a big hit not only in Jamaica, but in the UK where it was largely successful and covered years later by the New Age Steppers group.

Since his heyday, not much has been heard of Junior Byles. He released many more singles and albums but over the years he suffered bouts of depression after recieving many tragics news. There were times he was witnessed living on the streets and making frequent visits to hospitals. His last big performance was in Jamaica in 2004 which recieved positive reviews and led to a short tour later that year.
