 Trinibad Artist Boy Boy has been staying busy putting together and releasing new content over the past few months, and is not slowing down anytime soon. Still maintaining a following and his name being prominent locally and abroad, he has a lot more in store for the rest of the year. He makes his presence felt with the release of the “More Than 100” EP.

Featuring 4 tracks, Boy Boy is giving the fans a small dose of content to hold them over until a bigger project is ready. “Bufu“, a track featured on the EP, helped to start up the EP’s anticipation. He keeps it true to his brand with signature content, and with 23 Formation handling business, “More Than 100” will definitely go far. Backroad Gee is the only guest feature on the EP, and fans can look out for content in support of the EP.

It’s Summer, the vibes is right, and there’s a young lady who is dazzling to the eye, and the center of attention. She is the inspiration for a new single by Haitian DJ/Producer Michaël Brun called, “Jessica“.

“Jessica” brings talents from the Caribbean which includes Michaël Brun and J. Perry from Haiti, Charly Black from Jamaica, and SAINt JHN from Guyana (Colombia’s own J Balvin co-wrote and performed, and Jamaica’s Izy Beats co-wrote on this as well). The song finds the Artists infatuated over a young lady named Jessica, and they express how she has affected them. The Artists combine great melodies and lyrics, and we know all the Jessicas will be acting extra every time this song is played. “Jessica” is featured on Brun’s upcoming “FAMI SUMMER” EP, which will be packed with a few more songs that will raise the temperatures. Brun has been active for a number of years, and has worked with many of his Caribbean peers. Where is the Jessica in your life?

OLDIES SUNDAY: Toyan – Spar With Me (1981)

When it comes to Jamaican music, there is respect given to the Artist/Writer, and the Producer. What some forget about is the DJ/Selector who helps to break the Record. Before Social Media was a thing, it was the Disc Jockey who made sure your song got played. It’s still relevant in some scenarios today, and we still have to respect their role. Keeping with the theme of songs that may have been hits in the Summer, today’s Oldies Sunday selection comes from Toyan a.k.a. Rankin Toyan a.k.a. Pupa Toyan with his single, “Spar With Me“.

Produced by Henry “Junjo” Lawes and released through the Jah Guidance label in 1981, Toyan dedicated “Spar With Me” to the DJ, more specifically the legendary Barry “Barry G” Gordon. Toyan’s energetic delivery makes the song a very interesting one to listen to as he invites listeners to tune into the Barry G “The Boogey Man“, a name that has been one of the DJ’s trademarks, and invites the ladies to bubble with him as Barry selects the hits. Barry G has been a part of Jamaican music for nearly 50 years, and has used his platform and skillset to break Artists and Records, helped generations of Artist secure #1 chart success, and secured his place as one of the greatest Jamaican DJs whose name has travelled near and far.

“Spar With Me” became a popular track when it was released, and was featured on Toyan’s  1982 album of the same name. Toyan was one of the top Dancehall acts in the 80s, and he had a great following, inspiring a number of Artists. Since the release of “Spar With Me”, he went on to release more songs, and took his talents to various parts of the world. Sadly, he tragically lost his life in 1991, but his music continues to hold a significant place in the lives of many. Big up to the DJ.

There was a time in Dancehall where a certain “Teacha” introduced a “Prefect” to the world, and he went on to become one of the greats in Jamaican music. The “Teacha” is Vybz Kartel, and the “Prefect” was Popcaan. While their respective lives and careers took different turns over the years, they never made any collaborations. That has changed now as they reunited on the new single, “Dull Colour“.

Produced by AikoPonDiBeat, Popcaan and Vybz Kartel make for a reunion that was long overdue. They still sound great together, and they feed off each other’s energy throughout the new track. Will there be more collaborations in the future? We hope so, but it would be great if the original Portmore Empire members reconnected for something too. One can only imagine how that would turn out. It’s been a long time coming, but here’s a new Popcaan and Vybz Kartel!

It’s a new day, and a blessing for everyone to experience. While many things can happen to make the day less than positive, we still have to face it all with a smile. UK-based Dancehall/Reggae Artist S Pri (formerly known as Jami Dread) steps out with a new single to uplift called, “No Bad Vibes“.

Produced by Alystr Nash, S Pri delivers some positivity on “No Bad Vibes”. He encourages us all to recognize our blessings, and make the most of the life you’re given. Some days can be tough and your morale may not be where it should be, but we can’t let bad vibes own our lives. S Pri is just doing his part to make the world a better place. It’s been a while since we’ve featured S Pri, but he has been staying active over the years. The Austrian-born Artist was known for a number of years as Jami Dread, and released a number of singles in Jamaica and parts of the Caribbean, collaborated with a few Artists, and took the stage at a number of events. If you’re in need of a dose of positivity, get familiar with the new track. Bless up.

In the spirit of Summer 2023, why not give you another Summer hit? For today’s Oldies Sunday selection, we head over to Puerto Rico to hear Daddy Yankee’s “Gasolina“!

Produced by Luny Tunes and released through Machete Music/El Cartel Records in 2004, Daddy Yankee stepped out with an energetic track in “Gasolina”. Singer La Gata Gangster was an uncredited Artist on the song as she was the voice behind the chorus. While many theories were about the true meaning of the song, it was primarily aimed at the ladies who love to have fun. “Gasolina” is a popular phrase in Puerto Rico to refer to the girls having fun, and Yankee made a song paying tribute to that. The single gained gradual popularity in Latin America, and successfully crossed over to the US and European market, securing mostly top 20 chart placements in various countries. It was later remixed by a number of Artists including Lil Jon and Pitbull, was featured in a number of Films including “The Benchwarmers” and “Fast X“, was used by Universal Studios, MLB, and UFC, and was a part of former US Republic presidential nominee John McCain’s campaign in 2008.

“Gasolina” went on to create history as one of the key components that opened the doors for the Reggaeton movement to become globally recognized. It also was the first Reggaeton song to receive a nomination at the 2005 Latin Grammy Awards for Record Of The Year. The song was featured on Daddy Yankee’s “Barrio Fino” album, and propelled it to platinum status. “Gasolina” was the recipient of many awards, has been included in the “500 Greatest Songs Of All Time” by Rolling Stone, and was selected by the US Library of Congress for preservation in the US National Recording Registry.

Since the release of “Gasolina”, Daddy Yankee went on to become the “King of Reggaeton”, produced a catalogue of hits, recognized by CNN and Time Magazine, winner of many awards, and is still very active in music. “Gasolina” remains one of his most popular hits, and a Summer favourite.
