OLDIES SUNDAY: Kukudoo – King David (2009)

It’s a new month, and that means new content on “Oldies Sunday“! Today’s selection will shake up a few rooms, halls, and streets. We look back at Gospel Artist Kukudoo’s track, “King David“.

Produced by World Shock Media and officially released in 2009, Kukudoo made everyone rock to his “King David” tune, even the dead. Originally a song performed at Nine Nights/Wakes, the song was a mix of Revival Gospel Music, Bible stories, dancing, and Jamaican culture, and shared a few memorable lines like, “King David sit up on the heavenly throne, hallelujah…“, and “See people business and leave it alone, hallelujah…“. The backing production was regularly performed at Nine Night/Wake events, and it was only right to use for the official recording of “King David”. The song quickly gained popularity locally, and secured its place in being a highly requested song to play everywhere to this day. If a song could earn Platinum and Diamond certifications just be playing it in the streets, “King David” would own many plaques. “King David” was also performed at the “Jamaica 56Grand Gala in 2018. It gained an big endorsement from Media Personality/Lawyer/Anthropologist Dr. Kingsley “Ragashanti” Stewart as he would play it during episodes of his “Tambourine Radio” and “Ragashanti Live” shows in the 2000s, and related shows in the future. He was also recruited to appear in the “King David” music video, which was directed by Tinman (of SwagTVFilmz) for Creative Vibes Production. The song would go on to gain notoriety on Social Media platforms Instagram and TikTok, giving it even more life through trending content.

Since the release of “King David”, Kukudoo went on to release more music and albums, and became one of the most booked Jamaican Gospel Artists. He is still active today, taking his music to various parts of the world. “King David” remains a classic.

Thank You Kukudoo For This Classic!

OLDIES SUNDAY: Laden – Time To Shine (2009)

Today’s Oldies Sunday selection is a lil late, but we’re here. Today’s selection is dedicated to those who have dreams, ambitions, and a desire to win despite the odds they’re facing. We listen to Dancehall Artist Laden’sTime To Shine“.

Produced by Stephen “Di Genius” McGregor and released through the Big Ship label in 2009, Laden provides a song that aims to uplift, and encourage. An Artist who is filled with potential and promise, he asks the question, “When is it going to be my time to shine?“. In a time when everyone is trying to make it, Laden was just looking for his big break. Formerly known as “Jim Laden“, the Deejay was a contestant in the 2006 season of the Digicel Rising Stars competition series. He gained popularity after placing at 8th place, but his career wasn’t gaining the right success at the time. “Time To Shine” came at a great time for him, and instantly became a hit. Paired with the popularity of “Di Genius” and his productions, “Time To Shine” took Laden to various parts of the world, and the song even had some commercial appeal as it appeared in a few campaigns.

Since the release of “Time To Shine”, Laden went on to enjoy moderate success, securing a number of hits over the years. He had some trouble with the law, but nowadays he’s more focused on making good music, and lending his expertise to the new generation of Artists. No matter where life takes him, “Time To Shine” remains his biggest, and most memorable single.

RDX "Kotch" EP on 13thStreetPromotions.com #Jamaica #Dancehall #Music #RDX #KotchEP #BendOva #2009 #Daggering #Oldies #OldiesSunday #OldSchool #Caribbean #Renigad #Delomar

OLDIES SUNDAY: RDX – Bend Ova (2009)

When it comes to music during the Summertime in Jamaica, there was a certain type of music that would ensure the party was successful. There was the “Daggering” era that was filled with hits from some of your favourite Artists. This duo in particular had the era on lock with tune after tune, and they go by the names Delomar and Renigad a.k.a. RDX. Today’s Oldies Sunday selection from them is the single, “Bend Ova“.

Produced by Chad Simpson a.k.a. Dancehall Artist Mr. G on the “Wibble Wobble Riddim” and released through Young Blood label in 2009, RDX’s “Bend Ova” was a song that had one mission: to make the ladies DANCE! With the duo’s commanding lyrics, the intense energy throughout, and a Riddim that got things going, “Bend Ova” was made to cause a scene. The “Daggering” era was filled with sexual energy, and “Bend Ova” was one of the anthems as it instantly became one of the many hits for the Dancehall duo. The single was later released on various compilations, including the 2014 “Kotch EP“. “Bend Ova” also caught the attention of the Jamaica Broadcasting Commission who then banned the song, turning it into an even more popular song worldwide. Last year, it became a viral sensation on Social Media platform, TikTok that kicked off a challenge.

Since the release of “Bend Ova”, RDX went on to score more hits, and toured extensively. Unfortunately the duo parted ways in the late 2010s due to feuds, and as of last week, there’s no chance of them reuniting. RDX’s music is needed in the Dancehall scene that’s filled with “Choppa” songs, and many ladies have been unsuccessfully seeking alternatives to RDX. Let’s hope Delomar and Renigad really put things in the past, and get things going again.

Thank You RDX For This Hit!

This past week marked the beginning of the 2022 Summer season. Many have been looking forward to relaxing, having fun, explore new territories, and meet new people, and we urge you all to be safe. Nothing says Summer in Jamaica like a party series, or a Summer song. For today’s Oldies Sunday selection, we look back at one of Dancehall’s greatest Summer songs, and it comes from Dancehall Artist/Dancer Ding Dong with the track, “Holiday“!

Produced by Wayne “Hunga” Thompson for Notice Productions and released in 2009, Ding Dong’s “Holiday” single features Recording Artist Chevaughn. On the track, the Artists celebrate taking a break from everything to have endless fun. Whether you were putting down the schoolbooks or escaping the 9 to 5, this was your time to call up friends, and find yourselves somewhere to release the stress. The upbeat single encouraged listeners to break out the dance moves, and the accompanying Road Block Films directed music video showed off colourful outfits, and scenes with friends kicking back and enjoying the Summer holidays.

Ding Dong and Chevaughn’s “Holiday” was a hit, becoming a top ten single in Jamaica, and gaining momentum around the world. The single received a great amount of airplay, and it is considered a classic Dancehall Summer song. Since the release of “Holiday”, Ding Dong has been enjoying a very lucrative music and dance career, and he is still active and on top of his game. Chevaughn scored a few hits for himself over the years, and has recently changed his stage name to Qyor. For those who are ready for the Summer, remember to put “Holiday” in your Playlists.
