Today marks the 45th Birthday of the one they call “Gargamel“, Mark “Buju Banton” Myrie! While the word is he’ll be a free man by the end of the year, we still celebrate him as if he’s already here. His music has touched the lives of many over the years, and many have shown respect in the form of covers, tribute songs, and by sampling him. Today, we feature a few songs that have sampled him. #FREEBUJU! Check them out below, and show us some love on Instagram at @13thStreetPromo.
As we are facing the closing hours of this Valentine Weekend, there’s nothing like the oldies to add a finishing touch. Today’s Oldies Sunday selection comes from Mark Myrie a.k.a. Buju Banton and it’s dedicated to all the lovers. Titled “Love Sponge” and produced by Buju for Gargamel Productions in 1997, we hear Buju making a dedication to his lover. He goes on to detail how much she means to him, when they’re together they enjoy each other’s company, they make great things happen, and when they’re apart he gets miserable. With Buju’s infectious delivery, choice lyrics and a great production, this song went on to become one of Buju’s biggest hits and a song that’s made for couples when it’s time for a slow dance.
“One world, one people…” are the first few words you hear out of the new single from Gyptian and Xyclone. Titled “Free” and distributed through RSQTHP Music Group, both artistes display enjoying their freedom whilst demanding the freedom of fellow peers. Not a bad riddim, a bit of autotune, but sounds incomplete on the mixing part. Nonetheless it’s still a good song and good to hear Gyptian on new releases too. As a part of Survivor Slim’s “Jerusalem” compilation album, listen and download the song below and share your feedback in the comments section.
