OLDIES SUNDAY: Ras Shorty I & The Love Circle – Watch Out My Children (1988)

On today’s Oldies Sunday, our selection was made in recognition of the month of May being “Child’s Month“. Heading over to Trinidad & Tobago, we pick a song from the late Garfield Blackman a.k.a. Lord Shorty a.k.a. Ras Shorty I a.k.a. “The Father of Soca” along with The Love Circle Band. Titled “Watch Out My Children“, this was released in 1988 as a part of a live album of the same name, and in 1997. It was later featured as a part of the album “Jamoo Victory“. In the song, Ras Shorty I warns the youth to be alert as to not get caught up in the wrongs of the world, the dangers of drug abuse and it bringing shame and disgrace. A unique part of the song was that some lines were translated into various languages including German and French. The song has been translated in a total of 10 languages. The song, given its message, was later featured as a part of a Drug Abuse Campaign conducted by the United Nations. It was also covered by Jamaican Band, Chalice.

While the weather isn’t the greatest for some areas currently, the “Dancehall Diva Chic” Tifa wants to get you in the mood for some Summer fun early with her latest single, “JA Party“! Produced by Birchill Records, Tifa celebrates Jamaica’s party culture as she highlights the many moments that will have you saying, “Nothing nuh nice like a JA Party!“. If Pool Parties, Beach link ups, Street Dances, and Clubbing are missing from your system, then Tifa has delivered the right remedy to get you ready for them.

“Ja Party” is the first single off Tifa’s debut album that is set to be released in Summer 2018. The title will be revealed in the coming days. Expect much more from the Artist in the coming weeks including a new signings, more music, and appearances. We Take A “Quick Throwback” Look Into @TheRoyalBlu’s “Legal Badman”!

Before Royal Blu, before “sinG with God“, before “El Fuego“, there was Sean-Michael Francis a.k.a. “Blu Kid“! In today’s episode of our “Quick Throwback” series, we go back to the year 2011 to hear BluKid’s “Legal Badman“! Produced by Di Prodigyy, Blu sheds light on corruption in Jamaica’s Law Enforcement system where Police Officers abuse their powers and oppress many. Donning the role of a “Legal Badman“, they do whatever a Criminal would do, but shouldn’t face any repercussions because they wear the badge and the uniform.

Since the release of “Legal Badman”, BluKid went on to make some noise with the “Lethal Audio” Band, changed his name to “Royal Blu“, and released enough songs to make him one of the emerging young acts on the radars of many in Jamaica and overseas. Stay tuned for another quick throwback!

Dancehall Artist Voiide has been on the grind these past few weeks. On the mission to be heard for 2018 and beyond, he shows listeners the various styles to his art. Today we feature his latest single, “No Sunshine“. Produced by Van-Clive and featuring Rushae, Voiide shows how dark it can get in the country when it comes to not having easy access to a better way of living. The harsh reality anywhere is that when there is no love, and pleas fall on deaf ears of those in power, some people will do whatever to survive. “No Sunshine” is just one of many singles Voiide plans to flood the streets with this year. Today he continues his International run by joining Hip Hop/R&B Artist Bryan J and Rapper Young Thug on “Mos’ High“! With 3 different personalities and styles on the record with a “love” theme, this one goes for the ladies and creates a chill vibe from start to finish. This single is featured on Bryan’s Album, “Proof” which was released in March. The last time we’ve heard Young Thug and a Dancehall Artist on a song together was on this one. We Take A “Quick Throwback” Look Into @KabakaPyramid’s “Empty Souls”!

Before Kabaka Pyramid the Reggae Artist, before “Kontraband” hits the Internet, before “King Kabaka” ran the place, and before “Well Done” rocked the nation, there was the Rapper Keron Salmon a.k.a. “Ronny Pyramid” and he’s featured in our latest “Quick Throwback“! Going back to the year 2008, we check his track “Empty Souls“! Produced by Kevin Coates, Kabaka handles a sample based Production as he delivers some conscious Rap about saving those empty souls out there with the “doctrine from the Lost Papyrus“. The song also paid tribute to the late Rap Brown, a Rapper on the rise who was a part of Kabaka’s Bebble Rock crew, and known in the Jamaican Hip Hop scene.

Since the release of “Empty Souls”, Kabaka merged his Hip Hop influences with his Reggae side and became one of the prominent figures in the “Reggae Revival” movement along with Protoje, Jah 9, Jesse Royal, and many more. He has since released a few projects, and is looking to release his debut Album, “Kontraband” in May 2018. Stay tuned for another quick throwback!
