.@FridayNightCru Have Their Eyes On A lil Bad Ting Like “Monáe” In Debut Video!

Ever met someone who instantly got you in your feelings? Always looking for love in the wrong way? Well maybe you can relate with Jamaican newcomers Djavan and Damani a.k.a. Friday Night Cru as they present to you their debut single and video. Titled “Monáe“, the single was produced by Austin Marc, while the visual was directed by Adam Armond. The single is a blend of Dancehall, Hip Hop, and Pop influences and finds the Artists (including collaborator LEO. who wasn’t present in the video) meeting the girl that embodies the swagger of the beautiful Janelle Monáe (whom the single draws inspiration from), and making moves. To hear them say it, she’s a “lil bad thing“! The new wave of Artists in Jamaica show respect to those before them, but draw influences from every genre out now to make their own unique sound. Good music never dies, and the Artist’s name will live forever. With his first hit song in 2004 followed by a favourable buzz, Dancehall Artist Shane-O was on the radar of many. The years that followed however found him not getting the right hits, and a decline in the buzz. Fast forward a few more years his name started bubbling back on the scene in the form of his songwriting contributions for a couple Artists which converted into hits. Capitalizing on that, he scored a few more hits on his own including the hugely popular “Partner Draw“. We Take A “Quick Throwback” Look Into @TheKhxos’ “Watch Yuh Frenz”

Before there was Khxos, before “Dopamine“, before “If God Was Like Man“, there was Khaos a.k.a. “King Squady“. In our 3rd post in our “Quick Throwback” series, we go back to the year 2010 to hear Khxos’ “Watch Yuh Frenz” track! Produced by Kris Beatz, Khxos gives us one of his earliest songs with a message as he advises listeners to watch who you affiliate yourself with in life. He warns against fake friends who smile in your face, and stab you in the back when the opportunity arises. Since his 2010 effort, Khxos has made a couple name changes, and has created a buzz for himself thanks to various singles over the years. He is currently working on the follow up to his 2017 debut album, “Dopamine“. Stay tuned for another throwback next week!

Jamaican Designer Ranks High In Pensole World Sneaker Championship!

Jamaican-born Industrial Designer Mathieu Vaughan ranks high in the 2018 Pensole World Sneaker Championship. With 64 total entries, Vaughan is currently in the Top 32 after the competition’s 1st elimination round through online voting. A Pensole Academy Alum and currently enrolled at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), Vaughan’s design theme is “Abstract Approximation“, and is inspired by the Last (a mechanical form that has the shape similiar to the human foot, and is used by Shoemakers in the manufacture or repair of shoes). The finished product aims to give the wearer great support, comfort, and performance while adapting to the “Moc” style offered by some of the current Sneaker makers.

The competition is currently at the 2nd round of eliminations, and you can place your vote for Mathieu Vaughan here so that he can advance to the top 16. The competition continues elimination in the Top 8, Top 4, and offers previously eliminated entrants a 2nd chance at redemption before the Top 2 elimination and final winner. If Vaughan emerges as the winner, he will receive prizes from Tech company Wacom, have a limited run of his design being sold at select Footlocker locations, and a $20,018 cash prize.

The Pensole World Sneaker Championship was created in 2014 as the first global Sneaker Design Tournament to discover and develop the next great sneaker Designers. The Tournament goes through a single elimination, all or nothing style process in numerous rounds, and receives thousands of designs from all around the world yearly. It is sponsored by Wacom, Vibram, EDCO, and has partnered with Footlocker. Barrington Levy Gets Sampled On @MeganRyte’s “On & On”!

If you’re familiar with Hot 97, you’re aware of one of their personalities, DJ Megan Ryte. Recently she announced that she has signed with Interscope Records, and in celebration of her achievement, she released her debut single, “On & On“! Produced by MyBoyRoach, this blends some Caribbean vibes thanks to Tory Lanez, Hood Celebrityy, and the legendary Barrington Levy who appears as a sample. The song, which aims to prep listeners for the Summer fun and love, sampled Levy’s 1994 single “Be Strong“. Produced by Levy and released through the Lipstic Label, “Be Strong” was featured on his 1993 project, “Barrington“, and given the acoustic treatment on his Album “Acousticalevy” which was released in 2015. The song finds Levy trying to do right with his lady, but is bombarded with a lot of trials throughout. The Artwork for “On & On” was also inspired by Levy’s 2008 Album, “Teach The Youth: Barrington Levy & Friends At Joe Gibbs (1980-85)“.
