Jelissa Williamson Celebrates Jamaican Heritage With Kid-Friendly Craft

To all my viewers and readers living overseas, how much do you miss being at home? We understand many migrated for financial reasons, and some desire to return living better than they lived growing up in the Caribbean. Some keep the feeling alive by visiting when they can, some attend Caribbean-themed events, some secure the family connection, while others find creative ways to make “farrin” feel like home. London-based Creative and Mother of two Jelissa Williamson a.k.a. Jelissa Marie may not have been born in Jamaica, but she makes connections to keep herself and her family close to her heritage. Recently, she used her love of being creative to celebrate her heritage that everyone can enjoy.

With “Felt Like Yard“, Jelissa Marie creates fun items that tap into her love for Jamaica. In a series of videos she shared on Social Media, she displayed Jamaican cuisine and fruits that had many doing double takes to see if the food was real. From Ackee & Saltfish, to Oxtail with Plantain and Rice and Peas, to Patty, to Guineps, to Porridge with Crackers, to Jerk Chicken, Jelissa’s hands were given a special touch to make these well-loved items from home come to life. With children in mind including her two daughters, Jelissa’s creations encourage stronger family bonds, and with the use of the Montessori Education system, boost children’s zeal for learning and creativity, and develop a love and respect for heritage. The Montessori system is an educational system designed to tap into children’s natural interests and activities rather than a formal way of learning. This includes hands-on learning, playing, developing real-world skills, emphasizing a child’s independence and eagerness to learn.

Jelissa is currently dealing with a demand for her Island creations to be made for purchase, but she is finalizing her catalogue of items, and has a waiting list available for those interested. She’s also open for collaborations. You can find Jelissa on Instagram and TikTok.

Atlanta’s Jamaican Museum To Launch “Buy A Brick” Campaign For Cultural Legacy Building

Jamaica is global, and culture is for the people. Despite the Immigration numbers and how different life is overseas, there are those who try to maintain a solid connection with home through a manner of ways. With that said, there have been many individuals and organizations that try to educate, and preserve Jamaica for those who miss home, or have joined into the Jamaican circle through friendships or partnerships. In Atlanta, Georgia, the Jamaican Museum And Cultural Center has been active in sharing the culture, and all things Jamaica. With their latest Initiative “Buy A Brick“, they look to make something more permanent, and build a legacy.

On August 16, the Jamaican Museum And Cultural Center will officially launch their “Buy A Brick” campaign in Atlanta, Georgia. The Initiative will raise funds to assist in building a permanent landmark and cultural space to house and preserve aspects of Jamaican culture, heritage, and pride, with the aim to grow in membership, and legacy-building. With an event held at the APAP Media Group Office in the Stone Mountain area, and online on APAP’s official live stream, participants are invited to assist in sponsoring via purchasing a personalized, engraved brick that will be a part of the physical structure. Starting at 3PM, the event will host a series of live performances, and cultural presentations that will give the audience a taste of what the Museum has in store for the physical landmark.

We invite everyone, whether you were born in Jamaica, have Jamaican roots, or simply love the culture to be part of this historic movement,” said Dr. Apollone Reid, President of the Jamaican Museum and Cultural Center of Atlanta. “This is more than a fundraiser, it’s a statement of pride, unity, and purpose.

To be a part of this Initiative, visit jmccatlanta.com, and start your donation through bricksrus.com/donorsite/jmccatl. Come be a part of History.

We Have Highlights Of The Mandeville Staging Of @IYFJamaica’s “K-Fest 2024”

Over the past weekend (June 1), the International Youth Fellowship (IYF Jamaica) held the Mandeville staging of their annual “K-Fest” event. The event started little over 3 years ago, and was held to promote a stronger relationship with Korea and Jamaica, bring people together to share cultures, food, languages, and entertainment, expanding tastes and minds in the process. Held at the Fellowship Tabernacle Church in Mandeville, Manchester, attendees of all ages ate different dishes and snacks, danced to popular K-Pop tracks, learned Korean, and witnessed different aspects of Korean culture. We captured some highlights from the event, and you can check it out below.

Special thanks to the members of the International Youth Fellowship for the event and allowing the visual recapping of the event to happen, the volunteers from Korea who assisted in making the event a success, and for those who shared their thoughts about the event on video. Here’s to one day where 13th Street Promotions will be creating content live in South Korea.

OLDIES SUNDAY: Culture – Two Sevens Clash (1977)

Today we celebrate the birthday of a Reggae Icon who has contributed greatly to the culture, and funny enough he was the founder of a band called, Culture. We feature the late Joseph Hill today on Oldies Sunday by highlighting his band’s track called, “Two Sevens Clash“.

Produced by Joe Gibbs and released through Joe Gibbs Music in 1977, the Joseph Hill-led Culture shared an apocalyptic message on “Two Sevens Clash”. Inspired by a vision by Joseph Hill and a prediction by Marcus Garvey, the song spoke of the year 1977 becoming a year of judgment, and the date of July 7, 1977 (7/7/77) becoming a day chaos respectively. The song’s lyrics spoke of the 7s clashing (i.e. the seventh day of the seventh month of the seventy-seventh year), and it would mean that past injustices would be avenged. Joseph Hill’s vision came during a bus ride, with lyrics and melodies following, thus becoming a song in the process. “Two Sevens Clash”, while it was a very influential record upon release, it was paired with Marcus Garvey’s prediction, and caused many individuals in Jamaica to remain indoors and establishments closed, awaiting the fulfillment of the prophecy on July 7, 1977. The single itself was very successful as it gained a following overseas, and became the title track of Culture’s debut album that was released the same year. “Two Sevens Clash” went on to become Culture’s most memorable, successful, and influential song to date.

Since the release of “Two Sevens Clash”, Culture went on to release more music, securing its place as one of Reggae’s greatest bands. The band split in 1981, with Joseph Hill keeping the name, and recruiting new members. The band also had a rift with Joe Gibbs over unpaid royalties for the “Two Sevens Clash” album. The band continued to be active over the years till Hill passed away in 2006, prompting his son Kenyatta to take over as the lead Singer till this day.

THANK YOU CULTURE FOR THIS CLASSIC!
