OLDIES SUNDAY: Peter Metro – Police In A Jamaica (1985)

If it’s one thing that Jamaican Artists will speak out against in their music apart from the Government, is the Police force. In 2021, it’s still a popular subject as there are many members of the force who overstep their boundaries, and are at times a part of the corruption. Today’s Oldies Sunday selection comes from Peter Metro with his single, “Police In A Jamaica“.

Produced by Hyman Wright and Percy Chin for the Jah Life Time Label on the “Answer Riddim” in 1985, Peter Metro recalls an encounter with the Police on an outing with fellow Deejay Nicodemus. Their adventure begins when the Artists were traveling from Old Harbour in a rental while Nicodemus was smoking Marijuana. The interactions that followed are similar to what many face to this day. While the Jamaica Constabulary Force may show off feel good videos on Social Media today, it doesn’t put a wool over the eyes of those who experience daily harassment and injustice from members of the force. “Police In A Jamaica” was a hit for Peter Metro, and it birthed a follow up titled “Police In England” in 1986. Be careful out there.

OLDIES SUNDAY: Home T, Cocoa Tea, Shabba Ranks – Pirates’ Anthem (1988)

This one is dedicated to those who strive to get the music out there by any means, legally or illegally. Today’s Oldies Sunday selection comes from Home T, Cocoa Tea, and Shabba Ranks titled, “Pirates’ Anthem“.

Produced by Augustus “Gussie” Clarke, “Pirates’ Anthem” was released through Music Works Records and Anchor Records in 1988. On the track, Home T, Cocoa Tea, and Shabba Ranks team up for a dedication to all those who build pirated Radio Stations to play the songs that need to be played. While Radio Stations around the world have a set list of songs for airplay, Pirated stations bypass that by having the freedom to play any song in all its glory without worry about editing, and certain regulations. The only problems Pirate Radio may face are getting shut down, and possible incrimination. Regardless, they all return to play what the people want to hear. Pirate Radio has gained massive popularity through the decades, and new ones are being made often. Home T, Cocoa Tea, and Shabba Ranks display great chemistry on the track, and “Pirates’ Anthem” became a hit for them. The single was featured on the 1989 album, “Holding On“, which was released through Greensleeves Records. “Pirates’ Anthem” was given the sample treatment a few times, and some include Hannibal Lecter’sJust Because We Play“, 2Pac’sViolent“, and Shenseea’sRun Run” which was produced by Stephen “Di Genius” McGregor.

Rygin King Reflects On “Inna Mi Mind”

Emerging Dancehall Artist Rygin King has proven that he has staying power. As one of the Artistes who made a difference with the singles “Tuff”, and “Feel Like This (Big Toe)” in the late 2010s, the Montego Bay based Artist continues to grow his brand, and his fanbase locally, and internationally. While there are good times to celebrate, the bad times aren’t too far, and he shares his thoughts in the video for his “Inna Mi Mind” single.

Having been a survivor of gun violence in 2020, Rygin King has emerged better than ever, with the grace to make the life for himself and others even better. The single was produced by Zukie Records, and released in May 2021. It has enjoyed thousands of streams on music streaming platforms so far, and the music video looks to gradually boost the numbers. .@ChrisMalachi Shows Another Side Of Paradise On “Everything Cool”

Remember seeing those travel commercials inviting you to come to the Caribbean? How about those about coming to Jamaica? Yes the Island is a home away from home, and is indeed a paradise, but have you ever taken a look into how the residents are living outside the Hotels and Resorts that you’re used to? Well, Recording Artist Chris Malachi wants to give you a first hand look into life inside  “Paradise” on “Everything Cool“!

Produced by Koastal Kings, Chris Malachi’s “Everything Cool” is far from all that “Tropical” vibes foreigners speak of. You are in for a surprise if you thought this was a party song. While Tourists can get fat and lazy on the white sand beaches with a few Red Stripes in the cooler, Chris sheds a light on what Jamaicans are going through daily. Chris’ delivery is great as always on “Everything Cool”, and this is an important song that puts the island and the leaders under a microscope. From rising crime, to classism, to the Government failing the people, to a bad economy, the single and video will wake up many, and a change needs to happen.

Accompanying the single is a music video directed by Chris and Maya Wilkinson that was so beautifully presented, that even the Jamaica Tourist Board would blush. The video isn’t without a great cast which include Shernette Higgins, Koastal KingsBernard Hasenbichler, O’Neil Dacres, and the legendary Owen “Blakka” EllisChris Malachi cleverly promoted the single through a series of Tourism related content that was reminiscent of the “Kool Runnings” and “Come Back To Jamaica” eras, and he has a lot more in store in the coming days. Who is gonna fight for us?
