OLDIES SUNDAY: Lady Patra – Queen Of The Pack (1993)

There are many Queens, but there is only one Queen Patra! Today she celebrates Lady Patra’s birthday, and we honour her on Oldies Sunday by highlighting her classic “Queen Of The Pack” single!

Produced by Clifton “Specialist” Dillon and Tony “CD” Kelly and released through Epic Records in 1993, “Queen Of The Pack” was Patra’s way of promoting female empowerment as she showed that she can stand on her own, is strong, smart, and beautiful, and she runs things! Patra had no problems standing out in a male dominated Dancehall scene, and it paid off for her. “Queen Of The Pack” was one of Patra’s most memorable singles, and was featured on her 1993 debut album of the same name. It was later remixed by Producer Salaam Remi, and covered by Dancehall Artist Destiny Sparta in 2016.

Since “Queen Of The Pack”, Patra went on to release more singles, took some time off from music to complete her degree in History & Political Science, returned with more music, and flexed her entrepreneurial muscle with her Chateau 7 restaurant in Kingston. You can shuffle the deck all you want, but the “Queen Of The Pack” will always be on top! Big up Patra, and Happy Birthday!

Buddu Bye! After making noise in recent weeks with the single, Dancehall artist Popeye Caution finally drops the visual for the Splash Zanotti featured “BOW“!

Directed by Peré and Life Is Good Productions and shot in Florida, Popeye Caution can be seen cruising through the neighbourhoods in search of that loot. Whether in the Benz truck or the Quad, don’t play with him. Splash Zanotti appears later in the video to handle business with Popeye and the track’s Producer, Felva. The video features cameos from Singer David Lyn and Dancer/Style Icon Shizzle Sherlock, and Popeye even previews pieces from his new “Clothes Jesus” fashion line. International Poppy strikes again! Popcaan continues to put in the necessary work to solidify his place as a Dancehall legend, and an International Icon. The year saw him dropping hits and making international appearances, and today you can find him on US Rapper Meg Thee Stallion’s “Good News” album.

Featured on the track “Intercourse“, Popcaan did what he needed to do as he brought a lot of Dancehall vibes to compliment Meg’s sex talk over some Mustard production. The Popcaan feature was a much anticipated one since it was revealed earlier this week on Meg’s social media feeds. Today, we salute one of Reggae’s busiest artists, the great Junior Reid! With a career spanning close to 50 years, he has proven that he can adapt with the times. Within the past couple decades, he has been the go to man for feature verses in Dancehall, Reggae, Hip Hop, Pop, and R&B. Today we highlight some of his many guest appearances in our new Playlist titled, “Featuring Junior Reid“.

With nearly 4 1/2 hours of music, Junior Reid has been very, very busy. From classics like “It’s Okay (One Blood)” with The Game, to “This Is Why I’m Hot (Remix)” with MIMS, to “Stop This Crazy Thing” with Coldcut, Junior Reid always delivered. You might find some collaborations you’ve never heard before, or forget. The man is a LIVING LEGEND!

OLDIES SUNDAY: The Chosen Few – In The Rain (1972)

While the Caribbean and parts of the world are experiencing rainy days, today’s Oldies Sunday focuses on a different type of rain. Today’s selection comes from the Reggae Band The Chosen Few with the track, “In The Rain“!

Produced by the late King Sporty and released through Micron Music Limited in 1972, this is a cover of The Dramatics’ 1971 hit, and one of a few Reggae versions done. With many references to actual rain, The Chosen Few are speaking about heartbreak and needing to go out in the rain so no one can see them crying. A song for those who have been experiencing breakups and hurt, The Chosen Few delivered something that comforts the listener. King Sporty’s production on this blends Reggae, Funk, and Soul for something really special. The track was featured on The Chosen Few’s 1976 “Night & Day” a.k.a. “The Chosen Few In Miami” album. We featured it last year in our Youtube video titled, “Rainy Day“, feel free to check it out below.

After previewing some message music earlier this year, Producer Salaam Remi continues to do it for the culture as he finally dropped his powerful new album, “Black On Purpose“. Featuring collaborations with numerous black voices in music, he tapped into Jamaica and enlisted Super Cat, Stephen Marley, Chronixx, and Spragga Benz!

Having featured Super Cat and Stephen Marley months prior with the tracks “Push Time” and “Is It Because I’m Black“, Salaam Remi sought those who could help to push great messages in the music as the “Black Lives Matter” movement strengthened this year as racial tension in various parts of the world are on the rise. Chronixx can be found on “Afrikan Children” with Black Thought, and Stephen Marley appears for a 2nd time on the album with the track “Black Progress” which features Spragga Benz. “Black On Purpose” follows up his early 2020 release of “Do It For The Culture 2” which features Red Rat, Stephen Marley, Buccaneer, Majah Hype, Wayne Wonder, Spragga Benz, Ghost, and many others.
