Today (January 17), we celebrate the birthday of a giant, a column, and a King of Dancehall, Shabba Ranks. The Man born Rexton Gordon made significant contributions to the genre, with a few extras. Shabba was not only a huge earner for Dancehall Music in the 90s and successfully crossed over to the International market, but was the first Deejay to score GRAMMY awards. He paved the way for a number of Artists, scored a national honour for his work, and is still celebrated today. Today, we recognize his 59th birthday, and celebrate his catalogue with our latest Playlist.

After being away from a Jamaican studio in years, Shabba Ranks got back to his roots and released a new single. Titled “Big Time” and produced by JukeBoxx Productions on the “Greatest Creation Riddim“, the veteran Deejay shows us that he has what it takes to still rock the microphone. He also tells us that he’s needed in Dancehall Music and will always “give it to dem” when he’s summoned. Many were delighted to hear Shabba pick up the microphone after hearing him on Rapper A$AP Ferg’s “Shabba (Remix)” so will this new single mean there’ll be more in store?
