OLDIES SUNDAY: Don Campbell – See It In Your Eyes (1993)

All lovers get ready for this Oldies Sunday selection! In recognition of today being Valentine’s Day, we go back in time to check out UK Singer Don Campbell’sSee It In Your Eyes“!

Produced by Trevor T. with assistance from T. Phillips and Jazzwad and released through Juggling Records in 1993, Don Campbell is on a mission to retrieve a lost love after doing her wrong. Despite her rejections, he can see and feel that she still has a lot of love for him. With Valentine’s Day being a day for those who have strong love for each other, it can also be a day where the spark comes back in a relationship, or two hearts reconnect after being away from each other. Don Campbell’s “See It In Your Eyes” became a huge hit, and is listed as one of the greatest UK Lover’s Rock singles ever. The former member of the Undivided Roots Band struck gold when he made his first release as a solo artist as “See It In Your Eyes” quickly climbed the British Reggae Charts, and helped to gain him accolades at the 1994 British Reggae Industry Awards. The single was also featured on his successful 1994 debut album, “The Album” which was released through VP Records.

JKinggz Invites You To A “Badman Party”

Recording Artist/Entrepreneur JKinggz is one of the many artists who stays on the grind, even during a pandemic. With live shows on the decline since 2020, JKinggz knows he still has to make his brand stay afloat in other ways. The Recording Studio is still open for business however, and JKinggz has been piling up new music for release throughout 2021. One of the tracks he looks to cause a shift on the scene with is his new “Badman Party” single!

Produced by Ransum Records and Russian Mvmnts on the “Night Light Riddim”, JKinggz gets into some Dancehall vibes as he’s on the hunt for the right event to attend. Grabbing his phone, he hits up one of his friends to see what the vibe is like, how many ladies are in attendance, if the bar is well stocked, and is it safe for his crew to make an appearance. While JKinggz utilizes a chill delivery, the track will bring back memories of late night party hopping for some as they are the ones who’ll ensure that the event they are attending is not a waste of time and effort. Despite lockdowns of all sorts worldwide, JKinggz looks forward to the feedback from “Badman Party” and it becoming a playlist favorite, and kick off a higher level of vibes when listeners press play. With a renewed focus for 2021, JKinggz looks to keep the streaming platforms busy with more music in the coming months.

Born in St. Vincent and The Grenadines and moved to Brooklyn, New York as a teen, JKinggz is known for tracks like “Patek”, “Stack This Money” with Dancehall artist Flexxx, and “Fake Love” with UK artist Laughta. He has also released the well received “30 Days (The Life Changing Project)” in 2018, “No Co-sign” in 2019 which received rave reviews, and started off 2021 with the “Guilty” EP.

“Badman Party” by JKinggz will be released on Friday February 12 on all digital music streaming platforms through his JKM Entertainment LLC label. Follow @JKinggz on Instagram, and @JKinggz_ on Twitter for more updates.

OLDIES SUNDAY: Brown Sugar – Black Pride (1977)

February is recognized as “Black History Month“. While we recognize the Black man’s rise everyday, we continue to recognize some great Black people in music on Oldies Sunday. Today, we go back in time to check out UK group Brown Sugar with their classic single, “Black Pride“.

Produced by Brownie “T” for Dennis Harris Productions and released through the “Lover’s Rock” label in 1977, the song found members Caron Wheeler, Pauline Catlin, and Carol Simms celebrating Blackness during a time where racism and prejudice were still heavy problems in society. Being proud of the skin you’re in is what Brown Sugar emphasized throughout the Lover’s Rock single, but the message still falls on the deaf ears of many today. “Black Pride” become a successful single for Brown Sugar, and is still played to this day. Though the group broke up and reunited a few times over the years, former member Carol found success with a cover of the single when she embarked on a solo career under the name Kofi years later. Say it loud, “I’m Black and i’m Proud“.

“Uncrowned Queens” To Provide Entertainment During The Pandemic

Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Dr. Keith Rowley’s October 2020 announcement that, “Carnival in Trinidad and Tobago in 2021 is not on” has not stopped local artistes and Carnival stakeholders from keeping the culture and festivities of the season alive. Among them stands Warrior Empress, who, in collaboration with Music Mill Studios will present Uncrowned QUEENS – a virtual musical concert featuring some of Trinidad and Tobago’s most promising Female Calypsonians; this event will be live streamed via YouTube from 8PM (AST) on Friday 5th February 2021.

No stranger to the Calypso arena herself, Warrior Empress (whose birth name is Allison Bernard) has been singing professionally for the past fourteen (14) years. She sang out of the Kalypso Revue from 2015 to 2019, was finalist in The NWAC Calypso Queen Monarch Competition from 2010 to 2019 – placing 2nd on two (2) occasions 3rd on another, and was also the First  Reserve at The National Calypso Monarch Finals in 2019 with her own composition ‘The You in You.”

Showing her true warrior spirit, Bernard is not one to retreat when faced with challenges. In a statement to the media Bernard said she was inspired to produce this show “on the heels of one of the governing body for the Carnival stating that they would not be holding any [Carnival related] activities… not even virtually.” With three (3) successfully produced online events under her belt: With Women In Mind’ – a Mother’s Day Concert in May 2020, ‘Vocals and Steel’ – a Father’s Day Concert in June 2020, and ‘Rise Up’ – an Emancipation Concert in July 2020, in addition to an ongoing, online weekly talk show entitled “The Feminine Drive” Bernard saw this statement as an opportunity to innovate, and “keep the spirit of Carnival alive in a new way”.
