OLDIES SUNDAY: Deborahe Glasgow – Don’t Test Me (1989)

In recognition of March being “Women’s History Month“, Oldies Sunday will be highlighting a few women who have made their contribution to the Jamaican music landscape in the early years. Today’s selection comes from the late English born Lovers Rock/Reggae Artist Deborahe Glasgow who, despite a short music career, developed a following, and contributed to a few classic tunes. We check out her 1989 single, “Don’t Test Me“. Produced by Augustus “Gussie” Clarke, this single was featured on her 1989 self titled debut album. It was also released as a single and a duet version with Dancehall Artist Shabba Ranks in 1990. With lyrics about not being a pushover and being confident in one’s self, the single was a rather motivating one back in the day. It got bigger with the addition of Shabba’s contribution, and was sampled by the late Notorious B.I.G. on Hip Hop group Junior M.A.F.I.A.’s remix to their “Get Money” single in 1995.

Having started her career in her teens, she stepped out of the scene to devote more time to her family. Sadly she passed away in 1994, but is still remembered for her contributions to Lovers Rock, Reggae, and Dancehall.

We hope you enjoy our selection today. Be sure to check out the track and share with a friend. Show us some love/follow us on Twitter and Instagram at @13thStreetPromo.

OLDIES SUNDAY: Ginger Williams – I Can’t Resist Your Tenderness (1972)

In recognition of March being “Women’s History Month“, Oldies Sunday will be highlighting a few women who have made their contribution to the Jamaican music landscape in the early years. Today’s selection comes from a lady who is considered “The 1st Lady of Lover’s Rock“, Ginger Williams! We look at her single, “I Can’t Resist Your Tenderness“. Produced by Ronnie Williams, this was released in 1972 through UK Records (1975 through Paradise Records), and was one of the earliest Lover’s Rock releases. It was also featured on her 1977 debut album, “Strange World“.

Having started out as a member of the British group Green Mango, “Tenderness (or “Tenderly” on her Greatest Hits album)” became a hit for Ginger Williams as a solo Artist having topped the British Reggae Charts. She went on to release more singles and albums, scoring a few more hits over the years, and recently released a new single titled “Can’t Get You Out Of My Mind“. “Tenderness” remains however, her biggest hit.

We hope you enjoy our selection today. Be sure to check out the track and share with a friend. Show us some love/follow us on Twitter and Instagram at @13thStreetPromo.

.@OriginalKoffee’s “Toast” Featured In @JordanPeele’s @USMovie!

Recording Artist Koffee has a lot to be thankful for. With 2018 seeing her being the talk of the town with her smash hit “Toast” (racking up 16 million views on Youtube currently), signing to Columbia Records, touring the world and touching many with her music, her star has yet to shine its brightest. 2019 so far has seen Koffee making more moves, and this next move that we’ll share might see her standing out even more.

Moviegoers worldwide are anticipating the theatrical release of the Horror flick, “Us“. Directed by Comedian/Director Jordan Peele and starring Trinbagonian-American Actor Winston Duke and Kenyan-Mexican Actress Lupita Nyong’o, it has been the talk of Social Media as Peele’s previous film, “Get Out” was a huge success. Yesterday (March 11) at US based Conference and Festival South By Southwest (SXSW), moviegoers were treated to an early screening of the film, and fans of Reggae music were delighted to hear Koffee’s hit single as it has been included in a scene of the film. Produced by Izy Beats and Walshy Fire, the song finds Koffee giving thanks for her many blessings, and encouraging listeners to show gratitude. We featured it as one of our 2018 favourites, and we’ve seen it cross many seas and nations since its release, even scoring a “Song Of The Year” award at the recently held Jamaica Reggae Industry Awards (JaRIA). Koffee is currently gearing up to release her debut EP, “Raptureon March 14 which also features “Raggamuffin” and “Throne“.

Us” hits Theatres on March 22, but you can view the trailer below. Check out our post on Koffee’s “Toast” here, and share. Be sure to show us some love/follow us on Twitter and Instagram at @13thStreetPromo.
