OLDIES SUNDAY: Louchie Lou X Michie One – Rich Girl (1993)

Make sure you’re working towards your finances when you hear today’s Oldies Sunday selection. Today, we take a trip to the UK to check out Louise Gold and Michelle Charles a.k.a. Ragga/Soul duo Louchie Lou and Michie One’sRich Girl“.

Released through Fashion Records in 1993 (originally 1992 with Sly & Mafia’s “Riot” on the B Side) on the “Fever Pitch Riddim“, “Rich Girl” was Louchie Lou and Michie One’s debut single. The track was inspired by the 1964 track “If I Were A Rich Man” from the “Fiddler On The Roof” Musical. The track found Louchie and Michie sharing lyrics about getting out of Poverty and what they’d do if they were wealthy, but also share that no matter how much money they’d have, they’d never change who they truly are, and money can’t buy love and happiness. “Rich Girl” helped to get Louchie Lou and Michie One’s name out there, but wasn’t an instant hit for them.

Since the release of “Rich Girl”, they duo went on to find chart success, and release albums until they disbanded in 2000. In 2004, American Pop star Gwen Stefani and American Rapper Eve sampled “Rich Girl” for their single, “Rich Girl“, which was produced by Dr. Dre. It went on to become a multiplatinum success.

NEW VIDEO: @TheRealEVE x @FluffyMissKitty – EVE

Well that was quick. After leaking the single just a few days ago, Eve premiered the visual treatment to her single “Eve“. Shot in her current residence of London, we see Eve strolling through the streets and dropping her raps to make it clear she’s coming back for her title. While the single features Jamaican Media Personality Miss Kitty, she wasn’t available for the shoot and we can see Eve lip-syncing a bit of Kitty’s part. Very clean video although I expected more than her just strolling through the streets and rapping and I am upset that I had to search really hard to find a video available for Jamaicans to view it. How can you have a song that features a Jamaican but block Jamaicans from seeing it? What you think? Check out the video below and share your thoughts in the comments section.

While the producer is currently unknown, Eve manages to bring back some bark from her “Pitbull in a skirt” days on Ruff Ryders and aims to take back her place as one of the best female rappers to do it. Featuring a crazy sample that was made to say “Eve“, hard hitting drums, and some tough chat from Miss Kitty this is sure to get some replays. What do you think? Is she back to take back her spot from the competition? Check out the single below and share your thoughts in the comments section.

Titled “No No No” and produced by Steely and Clevie, this is a remake of her 1967 single “You Don’t Love Me” which was produced by Sir Coxsone Dodd. Here she sings about lost love and going through the feelings of losing that loved one.

No No No” became a huge hit for Dawn Penn and became her signature song. It became a #1 song on the Jamaican Music charts and reaching as far as #3 on the UK Music charts. It also made it to the music charts in Japan, Canada, and many areas in Europe. The song was so popular that it has been sampled and covered by many artists including Jae Millz, Ghostface Killah, Rihanna, Lily Allen, Eve, and many others. Dawn Penn went on to release an album of the same name and included the hit, the album went on to receive a Grammy nomination.

Dawn Penn continued to release songs and albums over the years which includes her latest single called “City Life” and even though she hasn’t performed in Jamaica in years, her song still manages to be played on the radio and at dances.
