OLDIES SUNDAY: Love Joys – All I Can Say (1981)

It’s a new month, and we’re glad to be here providing music for you to enjoy on “Oldies Sunday“. Since its inception, we’ve highlighted classic singles, guilty pleasures, underrated hits, and allowed our audience to get familiar with music they’ve never heard before. This Sunday is no different as today we feature UK-based Reggae duo Love Joys, and their single, “All I Can Say“.

Produced by Lloyd Barnes a.k.a. Bullwackie for the Wackie’s label and released in 1981, Love Joys were all about making the world a better place in “All I Can Say”. The cousin duo of Sonia Abel and Claudette Brown encouraged listeners to live a better life, call out those who do wrong, and hope and pray that things get better for us all. Over some solid production, the pair deliver conscious messages along with some melodies. “All I Can Say” was featured on their 1981 album, “Reggae Vibes“, and their official 1982 debut album “Lovers Rock (Reggae Style)“. The song became a hit for the duo, and became known in Jamaica, and various parts of the world. It was sampled in 2024 by Texas Rapper BigXThaPlug for his track “Havin Freestye“, which featured Ro$ama and Yung Hood, and produced by Tony Coles. “All I Can Say” was also featured on hit Video Game “Saints Row” through the in-game radio station.

Since the release of “All I Can Say”, not much was heard from Love Joys. The duo was recognized as one of the first all-Female Roots Reggae groups, but they disbanded in the 1980s. In the 2000s, Sonia Abel (now Sonia “Marla” Allen) would create the duo Natti Love Joys with her Husband Anthony “Jatti” Allen. “All I Can Say” is still remembered by fans, and “Saints Row” gamers.

Before the month is over, we want to show respect to an Architect in Jamaican Music. a Man who created a wave in the early years of Ska Music, and made his name prominent in other genres, that soon made him an inspiration, and Icon. His name is Byron Lee, and if there was a “National Heroes Of Jamaican Music” category, he would’ve been on the list. The late Musician/Producer/Entrepreneur took the music to new territories, and has received numerous accolades for his accomplishments. His Dynamics Sounds Studio was one of the best in the Caribbean, he produced classics in multiple genres, and he gave us “Jamaica Carnival“, popularizing Soca Music in Jamaica, making it accessible for everyone. His band, The Dragonaires, became the standard for many bands in the Caribbean, and have been in movies, on the Radio, and at an event near you. Byron Lee has done so much for Jamaican Music, but today we’re highlighting some of the music that sampled the work of Mr. Lee in our latest Playlist.

While the list is not long, we invite you to tune in to some of the hits that Byron Lee produced over the years, and some of the tracks that used his sound to make their own hits. From Ska, to Dancehall, to Hip Hop, Lee’s DNA could be found in some of your faves. Those who are not familiar, can use this Playlist as a start into discovering more from the late Icon. Our newest selection comes from an Artist who has been working on his craft for a number of years. Llyell is affiliated with echoB3ats Productions and a number of Artists, but he has been making noise since the early part of 2020. He has been working on a follow up to his 2021 “Pressure Drop” Mixtape, and now you can tune in to the “Comfort To A Fool” Mixtape.

Featuring 6 tracks and released through echoB3ats Productions, Llyell gets active with the bars on his “Comfort To A Fool” Mixtape. He dabbles in a few topics throughout the project, hopping on a few popular Hip Hop Instrumentals like Kanye West’s “Back To Me”, Lil Yachty’s “A Cold Sunday“, Future’s “This Sunday”, and Freddie Gibbs’ “God Is Perfect”. Llyell gives listeners a quick showcase while he preps more music to drop in the coming months. For those on the go, he has also presented a straight mix version in collaboration with DJ JoshEra. The Hip Hop culture continues to have some life in Jamaica, with many contributors and new styles. One contributor returns to the fold, and that is Montego Bay-based Rapper MoulaUE. Having taken time off for family and life outside of the Studio, he looks to make a mark in the 2020s, and show that he still has what it takes. He concluded his hiatus with the track, “Floormats“.

Produced by Limitless Joe, MoulaUE proves that despite taking a leave of absence, his skillset hasn’t left in “Floormats”. The “Mobay Mayor” gives a nod to some of his peers, and gives listeners a dose of what has been missing for a while. During his absence there was a rise in the Trap Dancehall movement, and we believe he can still secure a place in the scene as Montego Bay is home to many of the stars of the movement. The bars are still solid, and he can command any production that’s sent his way. We hope he maintains the consistency this time around. MoulaUE returns to Rap.

New York-based Rapper/Educator Chip Fu of the legendary Fu-Schnickens is making a return to the music in a major way. Having taken himself away from the limelight for quite some time, and is returning to the scene with new energy. With a new EP on the way, he’s gearing up with, “Like Us“.

Co-Produced with Bird On The Beat Productions, Chip Fu returns to the scene with an ode to the Boom Bap era. Kicking off a crazy series of flows, the MC takes listeners back to the days when FU-Schnickens shook the world with their unique sound, and Chip is keeping the fire burning. Accompanying the track is a Music Video directed by Owlman Productions, and it finds Chip exhibiting that style that makes him an MC who went toe to toe with the best of them. The video also previewed a follow up track, and paid homage to his Trini and Bajan background. Chip Fu looks to make bold statements when he drops his “Invisible Foot Steps” EP in October, and will feature a Dancehall track with NBA legend/Rapper/Personality Shaquille O’Neal. Be on the lookout.

There’s a party going on somewhere, and best believe some Dancehall Music is playing. UK Rapper Chip looks to add to the vibes bring the Dancehall vibes to his people. Just in time for the Notting Hill Carnival, he shares the video for the single, “Gyalis Pree“.

Directed by Chip and BDot, Chip has his focus on the Women, the liquor, and some good times all around in the video for, “Gyalis Pree”. One of the latest acts to tackle DJ Frass’ “Party Bus Riddim“, Chip is here for a nice time, and you’re encouraged to get the Casamigos and the Dragon Stouts, get the ladies in the mood, and have everyone to party with you. Chip looks to secure another hit, and the “Party Bus Riddim” has been making noise since its release of singles from the compilation. Party caan done, keep the vibes flowing!
